Are all washing machines liars?

Or have I just been unfortunate?

Up to this point I think I've been a gullable fool and just thought it was me misjudging.

But I've caught this one out. I timed it. Now I know for sure that it regularly* pretends there's one minute left when it's actually over two minutes.

  • I say regularly, I'm suspicious it's always but I've not timed other programmes, so I'm giving the benefit of the doubt.

Mine's a lying bastard too, it says 1 minute for about 7. If it helps, my husband has just gleefully informed me they do it at the launderette as well, so we are in good company!

AnImaginaryCat · 17/05/2023 16:01

Don't have a dryer. Probably better off - one less mistrustful entity in the house. Must test the dishwasher's truthfulness - got a new one recently and it's the first one I've had with a display on it. I'm not hopeful it's any better given posts on this thread.

When the machine rise up, the definition of truth will probably change. Dark days are ahead.

Yeah, theyre all liars. Mine lies about how long theres left, but also then I cant open the door for another like 10 minutes!

Beautiful3 · 18/05/2023 06:27

Mine doesn't lie. It's accurate. It's a hotpoint.

This would I suspect be open to abuse. You'd literally be telling your machine when you need it finished so it could take 3 minutes longer. The correct course if action would be to tell the machine you need it done 20 minutes earlier than is true. Kind of when I arrange to meet my chaotic ADHD friend whose timekeeping is woeful.

Ah yes I hadn't accounted for the "my time is more valuable than yours" factor

Mine not only lies but it actually says 'NO' to me sometimes!! What's that all about?!

The display screen will appear with the word NO, I fiddle about with it until it gets on with the washing.

Oh gosh! How stubborn!

PinkRobotDuck · 18/05/2023 06:52

Can we still buy electric switched machines and not electronic , moody, flickery, musical ones.
So frustrating when you push (firmly and long) the button and walk away only to come back later to find it did not engage.......grrrrr I want a reassuring CLICK (ON)

Good I'm not the only one feeling left out of the lying appliances. And just to really rub it in the door opens instantly.

Now you are just being smug!😂

Hmmthatsgoodchicken · 18/05/2023 08:07

I walked in on mine on 1 minute to go the other day. I thought ooh great, I'll wait for you to do your thing and I'll put the washing out. I died of old age waiting.
It had the audacity to go back up to 3 minutes and then each of them minutes took 5 minutes each. I had serious words 😂

x2boys · 18/05/2023 08:18

My washing machine recently had a faulty door lock and it would take an awful lot of slamming before it would take it upon itself and start it's cycle randomly ,my d h,has fitted a new door lock and it's behaving itself for now ...

anon12093 · 18/05/2023 09:05

Mine lies too

My washing machine is accurate it's a good machine, however my tumble dryer has its own timezone and the longest minute ever !

Washing machines don’t lie but are subject to a temporal distortion

tommika · 18/05/2023 10:16

…. I hit a temporal distortion

Washing machines don’t lie but are subject to a temporal distortion when the portal opens and closes to the parrelel world of lonely socks

It's hidden on a military base somewhere. Keep an eye out for those red framed signs for "works unit". That's where the socks go.

I replaced my first washing machine because it was a liar, and I don't need that in my life.

My second one is worse! Then when it does end, it beeps continuously for like 30 minutes to tell me it's finally dragged it's arse into gear and wants me to empty it. I might need therapy to untangle why I'm attracted to such a type of electrical malfunction.

A 57 minute cycle, will do half the wash then jump up to 59 minutes. Like the cycle isn't even that long to start with, I think it's having an affair with the tumble dryer - because the tumble dryer just finishes whenever it likes.

Although my tumble dryer is very young so I can forgive its immaturity for a little while, it's obviously not fully developed at recognising such signs.

CathyorClaire · 18/05/2023 10:34

Last one we had was a complete Pinocchio.

The latest one seems slightly more honest but still economical with the truth on occasion.

I'm watching...

BarefootBaritone · 18/05/2023 13:29

You need an LG.
Not only does it tell the truth about the cycle length (the first machine that I have ever owned that does) it plays you a happy tune to tell you it has finished. I love it to bits. Direct drive and big-ish load too. Couldn't be happier.

Other machines i have owned use "Microsoft time", which may or may not bear resemblance to real time, or worse, keep changing their mind. Grrr

BarefootBaritone · 18/05/2023 13:31

Oh, and if you turn it off you can open the door straight away because it is economical on the water.

Mrsjayy · 18/05/2023 13:32

I have an LG it's the best washing machine I've had and yes it sings a happy tune 😄

I will absolutely get another if and when this one dies (10 years old now). I would miss the happy tune if nothing else 😊

greey · 18/05/2023 13:39

ladygindiva · 16/05/2023 21:53

Yup mines a liar too; it'll say it has 8 minutes left for ten bloody minutes. He's also very spiteful; when the cycle has finished the door lock will NOT click off while I'm stood waiting. Yet as soon as I cross the room to do something else - " click". Petty fucker.

GrinMine must be a cousin of yours!

Mrsjayy · 18/05/2023 13:39

This is my second LG my first lasted 10 years a bearing went and it was just as cheap to get a new 1 than a repair, my new 1 has an add item function which is handy.
