Prejudices against innocent everyday items

I realised when picking a substitution yesterday that I consider lemon-scented cleaning products "common". I have no idea why I think this, but I've always avoided them. I now have over 100 lemon-scented dishwasher tablets that I'll be hiding from visitors.

Anyone else have weird prejudices against innocent everyday items?

@13Bastards "Live, Laugh, Love" various other things written on peoples wall.

I hate carpets. I have don't have any in my house. I don't care how clean you try to keep them, carpets can never be as clean as wooden/ tile floor.

Bluevelvetsofa · 16/05/2023 14:31

Vanilla scented anything
Jasmine scented anything
Dahlias because they signal the end of summer
Thos bouquets you get from the supermarket that are supposed to be posher, but have a few crappy lilies, a rose or two and loads of twigs that are impossible to trim.
Lilies in any form

Treaclemine · 16/05/2023 14:32

Like vanilla. Actual vanilla, from a pod, or extract.
But vanillin, the synthetic stuff, yuck, and my friend gets Coke flavoured with the stuff and drinks it in the car, and it fills the airspace.

My 6 year old rolls her knee socks into donuts. It drives me mad. I try and make the knee socks disappear.

Carnations. They seem very shabby to me.

Yes, poor carnations, I think lots of people have this prejudice. I blame service stations

tatteddear · 16/05/2023 14:52

Vertical fabric blinds such as you might find in an office. But in the home. Why??
They are so ugly.
There is a house near me that has these in electric blue in ALL their windows. The mind boggles as to what they rest of the house looks like.

CatMattress · 16/05/2023 15:06

Ooh. Net curtains. Pelmets. Divan beds with a valance (I have one myself, but only until I can afford to replace). Photo frames with writing on.

Bovrilla · 16/05/2023 15:09

Mirrored finish furniture.
Diamante on furniture and furnishings.

No lemon or pine scents here, too toilet-cleaner-y. Yet I'm happy to smell bleach or dettol Confused

In a long ago attempt to disguise the stench of decomposing rat, I used a Febreze aerosol spray, bought some by accident years later and all I could smell was dead rat. So Febreze is out.

I tried Brut perfume for decomposing rat. Big mistake.

Snowontheroof · 16/05/2023 15:18

Piles of decorative cushions on beds. What is the point?

CharlottenBurger · 16/05/2023 15:22

I tried Brut perfume for decomposing rat. Big mistake.

My mother told me she was a passenger in a VW Beetle from Bristol to Swindon with a man who was drenched with Fabergé Brut. She said she reeled out of the car when they got there.

NotMeNoNo · 16/05/2023 15:24

I am also prejudiced against any lemon/apple/orange flavoured cleaning products. I feel it's a fail when there's nothing but lemon rinse aid on the shelf.
Why would you want your clean things to smell (faintly) of fruit? Pine, or good honest chemical smell please.

Eyelet curtains. Awful.

I have never acknowledged this prejudice in myself but now you have said it I can’t unhate them

Gallathea · 16/05/2023 15:28

Oh yes, I forgot to join in with mutual hatred for eyelet curtains

Chypre · 16/05/2023 15:28

Anything "ocean breeze" - rim blocks, air/car fresheners, detergents.... Just no.

NetballHoop · 16/05/2023 15:28

Short curtains.

Curatins should always be full length.

IglesiasPiggl · 16/05/2023 15:32

Any of those "fancy" fabric conditioners like Lenor Chic. All the scents are revolting - give me some good old spring meadow any day!

Maraudingmarauders · 16/05/2023 15:33

Fruit 'flavoured' shampoo and conditioner. So pretty much a anything from the Body Shop. I'm afraid I'm a massive snob about anything that apparently makes you smell like a strawberry 🫢

IglesiasPiggl · 16/05/2023 15:34

That men's fragrance called Fahrenheit. It reminds me of teenage boys from my youth absolutely drenched in it 😂

RhymingGuitars · 16/05/2023 15:35

Anything vanilla scented, perfume, candles, cleaning products - smells fake and cheap (and triggers a migraine so I might be a bit biased)

Chrysanthemum flowers - cheap filler flower/garage flowers - I hate them. Tulips - lovely to look at but wilt too quickly.

Anything that claims to be a "dupe"....it's not the same as the original, it's a cheap copy trading largely on the desirability of the product it's copying.

Do self service tills count? They never recognise my bags, you even slightly move a bag to put your items in and an assistant has to come and check it..... I hate the bloody pointless things. Happy to queue rather than use one!!

IglesiasPiggl · 16/05/2023 15:36

Flavoured milk. Yuk.

stbrandonsboat · 16/05/2023 15:47

Bedding plants. I associate them with smug retirees who live in bungalows which are done in 1980s decor and they keep west highland white terriers which yap constantly and have discoloured fur because their owners are too busy faffing with the bedding plants to take them to the dog groomers.

Bedding plants often come in horrible gaudy colours and only last a few weeks and are disposable like plastic.

  • Plastic houseplants
  • Those monochrome New York skyline cushions/pics/wallpaper
  • Picture frames with bland nothing pictures in rather than personal photos or real pictures
  • those naff Rules of the House stencils with crappy ‘rules’ on that sound like they’re from cheap greetings cards or fridge magnets
  • swishy curtains with tiebacks and that huge boxy bit of material along the top (don’t know it’s name!)
  • and shellsuits or any kind of tracksuit worn as leisure wear when the person has no intention of doing any sport whatsoever
