Prejudices against innocent everyday items

I realised when picking a substitution yesterday that I consider lemon-scented cleaning products "common". I have no idea why I think this, but I've always avoided them. I now have over 100 lemon-scented dishwasher tablets that I'll be hiding from visitors.

Anyone else have weird prejudices against innocent everyday items?

I like lemon smelling things.
Don’t like the smell of bleach.
I hate rugs on carpets.

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/05/2023 13:59

Coloured toilet roll
Stencilled shite inspirational quotes on walls
Agree on carnations, last minute garage purchase

I have real issues around certain cutlery to the extent that I take my own cutlery out with me (do accept this is very much my issue though!)

Ungratefulorunreasonable · 16/05/2023 14:01

Any and all artificially scented stuff - cleaning products not so much but air fresheners and in particular wax melts, reed diffusers and plug in scenty things, I think are horribly common. No idea why I think it, but I do!

Any product that turns loo water strange colours. My very posh granny always had it so I don’t know why I think it’s common as muck!

I put those in when we have guests to hide the limescale and grub I can't shout from the bottom of the loo! So you're right!

Bovrilla · 16/05/2023 14:04

Pot pouring.

So 1980s. Some crispy bits of stuff which usually honks of vanilla too. Double naff.

I am offended by spider plants. Hate the bastards. No idea why, they're just hideous.

Bovrilla · 16/05/2023 14:05

Autocorrect fail. Pot Pourri

I think this about any lavender scented product. Makes me think of 1950s grannies. Vile smell imo.

Lavender beings to mind an aroma to mask incontinence

Brahumbug · 16/05/2023 14:09

My DM still has some poodles that she knitted in the dim distant past to put toilet rolls in, and she still uses them.😁

MathiasBroucek · 16/05/2023 14:09

Throw cushions on the bed. Just why?!!!!!

MagpiePi · 16/05/2023 14:10

Get some of these! I think they’re from home bargains

That was for @imgonnabe10

It doesn't seem to wash out of clothes.

And if you ever want to dry yourself, don't use it on bath towels!

Coat hangers are evil swines that tangle themselves up on purpose to annoy me.

Oh yes. God help us if they ever cross breed with kebab chillis - it'd be worse than Invasion of the Body Snatchers!

Nugg · 16/05/2023 14:17

Chrysanthemums. ESP in supermarket mixed bouquets. Carnations similarly but I can see their prettiness alone however they last forever and Never Ever Die so they bore me for that reason and I judge their immortality.

13Bastards · 16/05/2023 14:17

Oops, I love coloured loo water....common as muck me.

I judge Blue fabric softener conversely, it's smacks of a lack of imagination in my warped head.

13Bastards · 16/05/2023 14:19

Word vomits. So a wooden sign saying 'RELAX' in the bathroom or 'COOK' in the kitchen

I saw the other day 'excuse the mess, my children are busy making memories'

Don't get me started on 'in this house, we do Disney'

SinnerBoy · 16/05/2023 14:21

Yes, they make me cringe inwardly, too.

postwarbulge · 16/05/2023 14:21

One's choice of lavatory paper used to be contentious. A lavatory roll was seen as lower class while lavatory squares were seen as aspirational to middle-class values

Beseen22 · 16/05/2023 14:24

Yankee candles. I hate the branding, the smell, the ridiculously large jars which take forever to burn down. Any we are gifted get put to DH's office which I never go in. I actually hate them too much to regift them.

Pixiedust1234 · 16/05/2023 14:27

I cannot stand pine smelling products so prefer lemon instead. We used to have the pine airwick with the sanitary pad lookalike as a wick. I still shudder at the memory.

Gallathea · 16/05/2023 14:28

Yy to Yankee candles, air freshener (especially febreeze) and signs like LIVE LAUGH LOVE.

Also anything diamanté

Lots of velvet (especially crushed) and - a load of you will hate me for this - grey decor.

salsmum · 16/05/2023 14:28

Clothes with another language written right across your chest it irritates the life outta me and I don't know why 🤷‍♀️

DP and I really hate those scented 'bio' laundry products like Ariel. I can smell the scent on people who have washed their clothes in it, and sometimes it wafts out of open windows as I am walking along a street. In strong concentrations it sets off my asthma, as DP and I found out when we bought some tablets so we could use one to try and clear mould from our washing machine. It stunk out the house, and the opened box containing the rest was horrible! We left it out on the front wall as 'wall treasure' (a thing in our area) with a note saying 'PLEASE TAKE'. They were gone in minutes. We do have a little oil vapouriser (the 'smell machine') that we put stuff like basil oil on, in SMALL AMOUNTS. Can't bear Olbas Oil. We try not to judge things or people as 'common' except at home privately between ourselves! But yes.

I actually get this too! I don't know how much washing powder some people must be using to smell like the box it came in.

Whatt · 16/05/2023 14:29

I hate pine sented cleaning products they smell basic to me.

I hate peach tropical cleaning products as they smell like cat piss.

I hate washing up bowls as they collect gunk and look really common. I defo judge people who wash up in a bowl bath instead of warm running water.

Iyjd · 16/05/2023 14:30

Bargellobitch · 16/05/2023 12:19

Only on mumsnet would someone claim a bio laundry product stunk the house out. I don't know how people live their lives when everyday stuff is so dramatic 😂

If I didn’t use bio laundry products I would stink the house out.
