Prejudices against innocent everyday items

I realised when picking a substitution yesterday that I consider lemon-scented cleaning products "common". I have no idea why I think this, but I've always avoided them. I now have over 100 lemon-scented dishwasher tablets that I'll be hiding from visitors.

Anyone else have weird prejudices against innocent everyday items?

Scented toilet paper, pads etc can do one!

I hate tan stockings or tights. Any other colour but those!

Sellotape that doesn't have a dispenser can do one as well. I hate never being able to find the end

cling film. Gives me the heebies

Scented toilet paper, pads etc can do one!

They aren't innocent though! They cause numerous people yeast infections, eczema and aggravates lichen sclerosus.

Good point...

Ok, something innocent:

I hate nail polish that goes lumpy as soon as you apply it

I hate old lifts and paternosters are another thing that give me the creeps

Speedos on men. On anyone. Yuk.

Anything with hearts or inspirational messages, brings my inner Hyacinth straight out 😁

I'm a bit embarrassed to say this but I kind of like some of the inspirational quotes. However, those little plaques with Live Laugh Love on them need to die. I can't see them without thinking of Tena Lady.

The yellow fabric conditioners. They catch in my throat.
mixed bunches of flowers. Two ok, but no to anything more. I tried to explain once to my Dd and she sighed and said “Is this tinsel all over again”

This is also me. I don't find mixed bouquets pleasing.

Tinsel is a minefield I am staying firmly out of.

@Cam22 I think it depends on context. There are plenty of situations in which Comic Sans would be inappropriate but it's fairly legible and quite a friendly sort of typeface to use for, e.g. simple instructions for young readers (which is what it was largely designed for).

I have a soft spot for it as it was one of my dad's favourite fonts. Not long after my mum died he and I visited Holborn's probate office and while waiting to speak to someone we noticed that a lot of their signs used Comic Sans, which made us smile in an otherwise non-smiley situation. Probably not wildly appropriate to use CS in such a formal setting - but perhaps a friendly font is quite helpful for an audience dealing with death admin.

There's some discussion about its utility for dyslexic readers but I've not investigated it so don't know how sound that is, and there may be better fonts. But I don't think Comic Sans is universally held in low regard, it's just not really intended for Serious Business Documents etc so annoys people when it's put to that use.

See the Misuse and the Legibility sections here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_Sans

Jo

Comic sans was considered helpful for people who have dyslexia apparently.

Potato masher!

my mum wouldn’t have one in the house and would use a fork. My grandma the same.

when I married my first husband 36 yrs ago we set up house and again I continued the ‘anti potato masher’ prejudice.
2nd husband - again no masher

3rd and present Mr Fart had his own home so he came with lots of stuff …. Including a fucking potato masher

I use it - reluctantly

the present Mr Fart has a thing about our hand held hoover - he said it was a waste of money and we wouldn’t use it.

he grumbles everyday when he uses it to hoover his crumbs/budgie feathers/ fluff

Washing up bowls (always look greasy)

Eyelet curtains. DP’s flat has these and I moved in so now I have them, too. Huge windows, would cost a bomb to change.

‘Live, Laugh, Drink Prosecco’ type wording on anything.

Grey decor

Most dining chairs

verdantverdure · 17/05/2023 21:54

You can wrestle my black Harpic from my cold dead hands, but J also hate carpet and bedding plants.

Also new build gardens that are grey slabs, green grass and a gas barbecue. That's not minimalism that's soulessness.

Pine scented anything. Cheap and nasty

Sorry, I wasn't having a go at you. It's more something I see in the papers, they really should know better.

Normal people making a spelling mistake, or whatever, doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I’m very common as i love the smell of bio washing powder and liquids. Also love strong fabric conditioner like Lenor. I have a strong aversion to non bio products like Ecover . I’m convinced they don’t clean clothes/dishes efficiently. Better for the planet of course but not for my smalls imo.

SinnerBoy · 17/05/2023 22:57

Ecover washing up liquid is virtually useless and smells like mildew. My OH got a huge catering jug of laundry liquid and I spent ages surreptitiously pouring it down the sink, a little bit at a time.

For me it's nothing to do with being 'common' (whatever that means). It's just something I don't like that sets off my asthma. A lot of expensive posh smells do that too. People like what they like and don't like what they don't like. That's all.

Ecoleaf, on the other hand, very foamy here where the water is hard, cuts the grease a treat. You don't need much. Not scented at all. I don't mind some scented washing up liquid, but it's not a deciding factor one way or the other.

SinnerBoy · 17/05/2023 23:11

I don't mind lemon scented ones, which I tend to buy, as my daughter insists. I may look out for Ecoleaf.

I don't like artificial scents, especially candles. I don't have asthma, but they make me wheeze, as do plug in air fresheners and walking past Lush.

FraterculaArctica · 17/05/2023 23:13

Body mist, body butter etc. With renewed dislike since I was given a Body Shop gift set of the above (strawberry scented) for Christmas by DSIL with the slogan "Jolly and Juicy" on it, which I find vaguely inappropriately suggestive.

Missingthegore · 18/05/2023 00:29

I agree with so, so many of the points raised.
To add
Oven gloves where the 2 are connected. Hate them, feel like I can not be safe with them, I use the 2 seperate ones.
Glass chopping boards. The sound puts my teeth on edge
Not using a top sheet on a bed. Always have a top sheet at home and do not enjoy a B&B either traditional or Air without them.
Short charging cables
Sponges. Utterly detest them. Especially the yellow ones with a green scrubby side. I use a dish cloth and throw them in the wash.
Spreadable butter, it has oils and water in it and it doesn't taste like butter. I use a butter dish and real butter

Tabbytabs · 18/05/2023 07:30

Anything artificial. This includes air fresheners, scented laundry liquid, body sprays and especially sweeteners. The only acceptable fizzy drink is regular coke.

Mirrored finish furniture.
Diamante on furniture and furnishings.

@Bovrilla I bought a mirrored tall wall-mounted bathroom cabinet. What was I thinking? Fortunately it's in a bathroom I rarely use that my kids mainly use so no need for me to catch sight of all wobbly middle-aged naked body when I step out of the shower 🤣🙈🤷‍♀️ lesson learned!

Clothes with another language written right across your chest it irritates the life outta me and I don't know why 🤷‍♀️

I used to have a whole load of these when I taught French in primary - I considered them a learning resource and it was In No Way because I wanted to wear a comfy t-shirt instead of a blouse.
(Am I excused? 😉)
