Mushroom house light from the 80s...

When I was a child, I had a light in my bedroom, which was basically a large ceramic mushroom house. I think it was meant to be a fairy house (who else would live in a mushroom?). It was a rustic kind of pottery and had a large lid (the top of the mushroom) which lifted off for bulb replacement.

My mum and dad kept a lot of nostalgic bits and pieces from when I was a child for me, and now that I have my own house, with loft space, they've given me all the things to store for myself. I expected the mushroom light to be amongst these belongings, but sadly it appears to have been thrown away.

Now I have become mildly fixated on trying to find replacement, but so far all of my googling has fallen short. I can't even find a picture of one that looks similar.

Any suggestions or where I could look, or specific websites that sell tat from the 80s/early 90s I could try?

I know I am going to drive myself bonkers!

Do you think its possible it was handmade and bought from a craft fair, or a pottery shop?

BeefyWellington · 17/05/2023 19:37

Argh, I suspect this is going to be one of those threads without a proper resolution, sorry!

None of the ones posted so far are it (or much like it!).

Derek Fowler's mushrooms are lovely, but very different from the one I had.

Shelf pottery not it either!

I have looked at endless pictures and yet to see one much like mine.

The one is closest to the style, in terms of it being more of a rustic looking material (clay?) but the size and shape of it is still not right and mine had more fine details.

I suppose there's a very good chance it might have been a one off/handmade type item, in which case I am probably doomed.

I am now fully into "cottage core" as a result of this thread and keep seeing whimsical mushroom paraphernalia that I want to buy! 😂

This thread has made me feel all nostalgic. I had a toadstool nightlight lamp in the 1960's, it was a creamy colour with a red top with spots on it. Made of a softish, almost rubbery plastic though, not china.

CatOutOfHell · 17/05/2023 23:54

I think I had something similar to what you describe, OP. I can’t remember it clearly but your description rang bells. Also, one of my children now has a lamp from here: Piggery Pottery that gives me the same vibes.

We had a lovely pink mushroom house lamp with little hedgehog people standing in the doorway. Wish I still had it!

AprilSmiles · 18/05/2023 06:37

I remember my mum getting rid of mine because it was an arse ache to dust and the bulb was a nightmare to change!

That one is lovely!

If I can't find mine I might have to get a different one!

Mine was very easy to change the lightbulb on (due to the top coming off) but I do remember the bulb being brighter than the sun, so it wasn't really used as a nightlight ever!

@BeefyWellington your description of it sounds very much like the one I had and I can't find anything online like the one I had either. Mine was very "brown", different shades of grey and brown I guess, quite short and squat. I had one, my brother had one. I think mine had rabbits and his had mice. Yes, to the bulbs being an arse to change. Think at one point I had a red or orange bulb in mine. Mine had a sort of archway cut into the front so you could see the inside better and then some little holes in the mushroom top to let more of the light out there and possibly some windows

BeefyWellington · 19/05/2023 07:40

Update - my mum and dad seem to remember that someone in the next village from ours handmade them. So on this basis it would seem unlikely that I'm going to be able to find one for sale anywhere!

I might join the FB group for that village and ask if anyone remembers who it was or has any info. But I can't decide if I want to go to that level of obsession or not. 😂

I had one of these.
My dad replaced the bulb.
There was fire.
It went to live on a farm.

It looks like a Derek Fowler one but more pastel colours. Perhaps there was a guy making cheap knockoffs that had dodgy electrics?

Bleepbloopbluurp · 19/05/2023 08:17

I had one too.

I ended up buying modern versions for my children from whiterabbitengland .com

Not identical to mine but really special and my kids are older now but are keeping them to give to their children.

PurelyBelter · 19/05/2023 08:33

MIL gave us this for DD. It was my DPs, think it has rabbits inside.

@BeefyWellington definitely join the group and ask! What have you got to lose? And whoever it was would probably be delighted their work is so well remembered and appreciated.
