Mushroom house light from the 80s...

When I was a child, I had a light in my bedroom, which was basically a large ceramic mushroom house. I think it was meant to be a fairy house (who else would live in a mushroom?). It was a rustic kind of pottery and had a large lid (the top of the mushroom) which lifted off for bulb replacement.

My mum and dad kept a lot of nostalgic bits and pieces from when I was a child for me, and now that I have my own house, with loft space, they've given me all the things to store for myself. I expected the mushroom light to be amongst these belongings, but sadly it appears to have been thrown away.

Now I have become mildly fixated on trying to find replacement, but so far all of my googling has fallen short. I can't even find a picture of one that looks similar.

Any suggestions or where I could look, or specific websites that sell tat from the 80s/early 90s I could try?

I know I am going to drive myself bonkers!

I had ceramic nightlight that was a bunnies house, loved it. It was by a designer called Derek Fowler.

What colour?

I had one too! Mine was the palest pink and my brother had a pale blue one. We didn’t keep them. I fell down a retro lamp rabbit hole when I had my eldest as would’ve loved the same one. Sadly I didn’t manage to find it.

I have - there are a few but unfortunately nothing like mine (at the moment anyway, I must remember to keep checking).

I was hoping I could find an image of one at least.

I might have to quiz my parents and find out of they can remember anything about where it came from to try and narrow down the search.

It was kind of a light brownish stonewear colour, if I recall correctly - but it was painted so it had coloured details, like plants climbing up the walls. The big mushroom roof was brown with darker brown spots on top. But they weren't painted on they were physical 3D bits stuck on.

I'd know it immediately if I saw a photo of one. I wish I could remember more about it!

It's going to drive me crackers. I don't even know if it was definitely 80s - but I was born mid-eighties and had it from a young age, so I'm assuming it was from that era.

I’m sure I remember one of these - maybe a friend had one. I had a little cottage night light with mice in the 80s/90s which I think I still have in the loft :)

Have you tried searching for toadstool instead of mushroom?

Sounds like one my cousin had in her room in 1979 (I know the year because it was the year her little sister was born) along with a Snoopy poster on one wall and a Love Is poster on another. The rest of the house was 100% Laura Ashley wallpaper, Habitat furniture and M&S linen.

Keep looking, as it'll show up eventually. Then you can add the Cheese Plant, venetian blinds, Bang & Olufsen record player with the two albums released by a new band called Dire Straits (Self titled to include Sultans of Swing and Communiqué - the blue one) on every evening, cork tiles on the dining room walls and the smoked glass table with the basket weave metal framed chairs.

(DP spent months trying to find exactly the right brown china chicken shaped egg crock for me - after ordering four, he realised he had the right one and then sold the other three for a profit).

Was it made by David Fowler perhaps?

The thing about getting them off eBay is that the old electrics aren’t normally safe, and the structure isn’t easy to fix a new lamp kit into. But I got a gorgeous new one from White Rabbit England for my DD, as above!
