Buying a b-day card for pet

Darkcloudshere · 11/05/2023 13:30

Would you find it strange if someone told you they were buying a b-day card for their pet?! 😀

I bumped into someone I know in the card shop and I told her I was looking for a card for my cat. I think she gave me a strange look and I feel I should have not said anything. Not everyone understands the love for a pet.

(It's really for our 5 yo DD who loves her cat and wants to throw her a mini b-day party 🥳 ).

I have lots of friends who buy presents and stuff for their dogs birthdays.

I have 4 dogs and only know the month of birth for all of them, not the exact date

Even the year gets forgotten sometimes

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 11/05/2023 13:32

Each to their own I suppose. But if it was for your dc who's giving her cat a bday card, I would have at least let her choose one herself.

RenegadeMrs · 11/05/2023 13:33

Yes I would find it strange that an adult would want to buy a card for a cat, but a lot less strange that a 5 year old would. I have thrown 'birthday' parties for many soft toys at this stage, although I would tell them to make their own cards. It usually just an excuse for the children to make some cupcakes.

Hope your DD enjoys the cat's birthday!

DuchessOfSausage · 11/05/2023 13:34

Only not strange if DCat buys you a card for your birthday.

You know the rules, DCat threads need a photo or it's not true.

Darkcloudshere · 11/05/2023 13:36

DD is making her a card of course, but I thought one card would come from mummy and daddy too.

Oh dear, I feel like I have to say something to her, she must have thought I'm mad. I work with her part time.

More money than sense springs to mind

I was looking in the Card factory for a 69p one...we thankfully can afford that.

As an adult I’d think - bit weird but harmless.
As a child I’d just think - cute!
Can she not make one for the cat herself?

SnowAtRedRocks · 11/05/2023 13:38

I’d think it was cute and if I knew you had kids, I’d would imagine it’s more for their benefit.

We don’t send our pets cards, our kids are older, but we do get the gifts, a cake and a have a little ‘party’ on their birthdays. 😂 We love them, they’re our family, so why not? Our friends buy birthday and Xmas presents for our pets and we do the same for theirs. 😅

magicstar1 · 11/05/2023 13:39

A card is a bit strange as the pet can't read....but presents are fine lol.

I got a card from the dog for Mother's Day. A friend of mine dropped it in anonymously and we got a good laugh from it.

😂 It’s a birthday card, not a diamond encrusted water bowl. Although....

GoodChat · 11/05/2023 13:41

If you told me you were buying your cat a birthday card I'd buy one too and give it to you next time I saw you. I think it's nice to take an interest in things that are important to your friends.

RenegadeMrs · 11/05/2023 13:42

I wouldn't bother explaining to your work college. Nothing wrong with being regarded as slightly eccentric.

Or, you could go all in and bring in some 'left over' cake from the cat's birthday party to your work.

Zola1 · 11/05/2023 13:42

I don't buy my dog a card as she can't read but equally I'd be happy to buy cards for the kids to give to the dog if they wanted

minkymini · 11/05/2023 13:44

Well a friend had a party for her dog , complete with a dog food birthday cake , hats , decorations and cards and wrapped presents. 😆

Vickythevan63 · 11/05/2023 13:45

Well our dog is 10 today - she got a card, banner and we had lunch out (any excuse for a pub meal!) and she has some mini dog cakes for later. She has had a new basket from our young adult kids (who are obsessed with her) and a couple of other treats.

I did send out a video of her opening presents (she loves it and is very competent, Christmas is bliss for her!) and one friend replied with a comment implying WTF 🤣🤣🤣

Your friend is unreasonable. 😉

Awww...thank you all for your replies, I feel a lot better! 😀

This is our cat who is going to turn 1 soon.

Ok, scrap the more money than sense.

Stick with yes I think it's weird.

I barely buy cards for people though, so that probably has some impact on my opinion.

ThereIsAnEchoInHere · 11/05/2023 13:52

We always buy the dog & cat Christmas presents and they get extra treats on their birthday, but they can’t open envelope or read, so a card seems a bit pointless tbh.

mydogisthebest · 11/05/2023 13:54

Me and DH always buy birthday cards for our dogs. They get a doggie cake with candles too and we sing happy birthday to them.

When my parents were alive they always sent birthday cards to our dogs. My siblings buy them Christmas presents and we buy for their cats.

I know lots of people who buy their pets birthday cards and don't think it odd at all.

Our dogs buy us Mothers and Fathers Day cards and buy us a present!

SirenSays · 11/05/2023 13:56

Awwe that's so sweet! Mine get birthday cards, easter eggs, advent calendars..
