Small(ish) lottery win - Do I keep it since they didn’t pay?

We’ve had a family syndicate going for 6 months or so now. Few £10 wins etc but nothing big.

For the past 2 weeks, nobody has bothered paying in. They kept saying they’d do it next week, and then next week came and they said they’d do it that week. But everyone forgot again!

I won on Tuesday. Nothing OTT but a sizeable sum

If I keep it to myself, it’ll change my life. If I share it between the 4 of us, it’ll pay for a fancy holiday and that’s it.

What do I do? 😬

No pay, no play. Those that paid that week split the winnings.

DucksNewburyport · 05/05/2023 20:03

As they've only not paid for the last couple of weeks I think you should share. It would be different if they hadn't paid for ages.

35965a · 05/05/2023 20:03

If you don’t pay you don’t get the winnings so you keep it yourself

Hadalifeonce · 05/05/2023 20:04

You paid for it, the prize is yours.

Tootyfilou · 05/05/2023 20:04

What would you want them to do if you were in their situation?

MondayYogurt · 05/05/2023 20:04

I would not be telling anyone IRL about this.

jammydodg · 05/05/2023 20:05

Can you tell us how much OP? Is it around £5k?

DisforDarkChocolate · 05/05/2023 20:05

No pay no payout.

If they find out they will never forgive you. Will they find out?

rooroorooroooroo · 05/05/2023 20:05

Keep it. I would.

fortheloveofflowers · 05/05/2023 20:06

They haven’t paid do it’s not theirs!!

PinkFootstool · 05/05/2023 20:06

Do you play the same numbers each week or just do lucky dips?

If lucky dips, I'd just keep the lot.

If it's the same numbers each week, whose numbers came up? Because if it wasn't your numbers and you played their tickets, I can see a big dispute on its way....

This is why at work we signed the syndicate form they offer!

Ilikewinter · 05/05/2023 20:06

I think its very easy for us to say keep it, tough if they havent paid....however when this comes out be prepared for a family fallout!.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 05/05/2023 20:06

No. Do not share. If you could buy the ticket after it wins everyone would do that - it's just not how it works!

Keep the money. Say nothing.

Lucky dips every time, except one line which is my chosen numbers.

The winner was a lucky dip

Say nothing and change your life slowly. Imo it’s very clear that only those who pay for the winning ticket should get the prize, but people will be funny about it so easiest to not say anything.

coodawoodashooda · 05/05/2023 20:07

One day they'll find out. You'll become Spare.

Mindymomo · 05/05/2023 20:08

I would share it out, as I couldn’t keep it to myself. I remember when the National Lottery started and it was recommended that any syndicate drew up rules to say whether the people who hadn’t paid in that week would not be eligible for a share in the winnings, I presume if it’s family you haven’t got anything in writing.

edwinbear · 05/05/2023 20:09

If it was a work syndicate I’d keep it. Given its family, depending on whether they are close family and I actually liked them, I’d probably share. But how much is it? Over £10k?

Howmanysleepsnow · 05/05/2023 20:09

I’d say that anyone who wants to stay in the syndicate needs to pay money owed and this week/ months by tomorrow/ Sunday/ whenever. Then announce the win after the next draw

swimmingforCB · 05/05/2023 20:09

No, nothing in writing

Then fuck em! You bought a lucky dip and that's the end of it.

AnythingToSay · 05/05/2023 20:10

Oh no. Wasn't this the plot of The Syndicate? I don't think it ended well 😬

Yes, over £10k
