'May the king live forever'?!

Just seen this on BBC News...apparently during the coronation people around the country will be asked to pay 'homage' to the king from their living rooms, including reciting the phrases 'God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the king live forever.'

I mean, I'm not a royalist, but surely even a royalist would think this is ridiculous and cringey? Saying 'may he live forever' as though he is some kind of deity?! WTF?

Eternal life would be far more of a curse than a blessing.

Lockheart · 29/04/2023 22:56

It's been a standard saying for years, although of course not realistic and a bit odd.

ichundich · 29/04/2023 22:59

Isn't this from the Coronation Anthem (Handel)? Which means it is 400 years old.

Sounds like it’s lifted from Zadoc the Priest, part of Handel’s coronation anthem. Very odd wanting people at home to join in, though.

stbrandonsboat · 29/04/2023 23:34

Sounds a bit cultish to me, standing in front of the TV chanting words at it 😂

DiscoBeat · 29/04/2023 23:56

May the king live forever? That's a bit unrealistic. The Queen didn't, even though she did well.
I think it's highly unlikely that people are going to be standing in front of their Panasonic TVs and chanting. Just bonkers.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 29/04/2023 23:57

Is it still technically a crime to speak about a Kings Death?

Mydcchangedmyusername · 30/04/2023 00:00

That would be mean to wish the king to live forever. Anyone would be happy to 'unlive' after a while so they could rest.

People just say anything in the name of tradition, pimp and ceremony.

I'll be wishing him a good life (however long his will be) as I wish everybody else. Nothing more special for anyone, be it king or pauper.

Mydcchangedmyusername · 30/04/2023 00:01

pomp*

Precipice · 30/04/2023 00:19

That's what they said in Calormen in the Narnia books, in reference to their ruler, a cruel man who kicked his servants and ordered the invasion of another country. It was clearly as a sign of a despotic regime.

British already believe and live under so much fairytales in this land, what’s another stupid act after brexit? It’s all bonkers anyway. A royal family in a country where children are treated like shit and there’s poverty lack of policies for vulnerable, paid universities and crap pay for doctors.

clapping and chanting for the royals it’s nothing. The bastards should at least made the coronation on a Monday and made it a national holiday.

MmaRra · 30/04/2023 00:55

What, and deny him the opportunity to come back as Camilla's tampon? Never.

This. People aren’t actually going to chant this shit at their TVs are they? If you are, why?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/04/2023 01:02

It's just the words from Zadok the Priest.

Zadok the priest
And Nathan the prophet
Anointed Solomon king
And all the people
Rejoiced, rejoiced, rejoiced
And all the people
Rejoiced, rejoiced, rejoiced
Rejoiced, rejoiced, rejoiced
And all the people
Rejoiced, rejoiced, rejoiced and said
God save the king
Long live the king
God save the king
May the king live forever
Amen, amen, alleluia, alleluia, amen, amen
Amen, amen, alleluia, amen

It's a bloody brilliant song to be in a choir for - right from the start as the orchestra swells, ebbs and flows to increase excitement and anticipation before bringing you right in on the peak of a wave of energy.

I'd switch it for the dirge that performers are constantly fucking up at the start of sporting events - no danger of singing God Save the QUEERRRRIIIIIINNNNNGGGGG, for a start.

cheesywotsit62 · 30/04/2023 01:05

I honestly cannot believe this is what we are living in in this day and age. It’s complete and utter fucking bollocks and I want shot of the lot of it.
Feel free monarchists to @ me. I really don’t fucking care 😂

cheesywotsit62 · 30/04/2023 01:09

“this sense of a great cry around the nation and around the world of support for the King."
Quoted directly from the BBC.

Really? The state of this country - hospital strikes, food banks and pure poverty and they want us to swear allegiance to a so called ‘King’?
Stick it up your arse. I’m off.

FictionalCharacter · 30/04/2023 01:17

@RelentlessMother We are getting a national coronation holiday on Monday 8th May.

TheShellBeach · 30/04/2023 01:17

It's just a line from Zadok the Priest.
It refers to King Solomon. I daresay people in those days did want their kings to live forever.
I doubt if Charlie wants to.

Mydcchangedmyusername · 30/04/2023 01:17

I know right?

In support of the King...what exactly are we "supporting"?

CuriousMoo · 30/04/2023 01:18

We're supposed to pretend he's annointed by God to rule over us.

It's pathetic.

cheesywotsit62 · 30/04/2023 01:23

Ahhh shit! I forgot about that! I’m going to go to Tescos tomorrow to get everything ready for the grand ‘coronation’.
I’ll make sure to get some cheap shite to pop into the food bank donation on my way out 🙂

cheesywotsit62 · 30/04/2023 01:24

@CuriousMoo post above! Don’t want you to miss vital info.

Nat6999 · 30/04/2023 01:25

Not in my name, for all this is supposed to be a slimmed down coronation, the security is costing £135 million. Just imagine what good could be done with that money. Just like the ridiculous police presence round Rishi Sunak's car in London this week, must have been at least 40 police either on pushbikes or running surrounding the cars, what a waste of money.
