'May the king live forever'?!

Just seen this on BBC News...apparently during the coronation people around the country will be asked to pay 'homage' to the king from their living rooms, including reciting the phrases 'God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the king live forever.'

I mean, I'm not a royalist, but surely even a royalist would think this is ridiculous and cringey? Saying 'may he live forever' as though he is some kind of deity?! WTF?

I've dug out my peasant smock and stomped it through a muddy puddle outside in preparation

This is an except from the coronation of the Queen when this was played. As a spectacle, its quite fabulous!
Expecting the public to join in and chant is bonkers though. Most of them will be wondering why the they're playing the Champions League theme 🤣🤣

For your children's sake if not for you; it appears it's too late for you... Try writing without including the teenage obscenity abbreviation slang "WTF".
Good luck to your children.

And the (royal) pearl clutcher award goes too...... 😬

To not too.
Autocorrect fail as it is possible to be literate and despise the monarchy.

Not sure if this has been posted earlier, but note that the words which will be said in the service are actually "whoever wishes to" (iirc from the order of service) is invited to say these words.... so no element of coercion!

Been pondering the meaning of this … God Save & Long Live “King Charles” whereas “live forever” is just “The King” - is this therefore referring to The King of Kings (ie Jesus) rather than saying King Charles should live forever (which is unrealistic!!)

piedbeauty · 06/05/2023 11:15

It means the monarchy. 'The Queen is dead, long live the King.'
