'May the king live forever'?!

BarbaraVineFan · 29/04/2023 22:52

Just seen this on BBC News...apparently during the coronation people around the country will be asked to pay 'homage' to the king from their living rooms, including reciting the phrases 'God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the king live forever.'

I mean, I'm not a royalist, but surely even a royalist would think this is ridiculous and cringey? Saying 'may he live forever' as though he is some kind of deity?! WTF?

Ahhh shit! I forgot about that! I’m going to go to Tescos tomorrow to get everything ready for the grand ‘coronation’.
I’ll make sure to get some cheap shite to pop into the food bank donation on my way out 🙂

Vital info about you going to Tesco's?

I guess that is actually slightly more relevant and vital to modern life than those inbreds celebrating themselves 😂

Btw it's not until next week, so you can save your sloppy sandwiches until then.

TillyTollyTully · 30/04/2023 01:40

What, and deny him the opportunity to come back as Camilla's tampon? Never.

😂😂😂😂

In all honesty yes, I did think it was pertinent you knew about my trip to Tesco. Far more important than those inbred bastards, thank you very much 😇

Can't argue with that!

I know what 'homage' my dad will be paying; the middle-fingered kind.

WandaWonder · 30/04/2023 02:34

Nothing against the op as I am genuinely interested in this thread

However with the amount of royal threads it feels like they have lived forever

DogDamIt · 30/04/2023 02:57

So after chanting kumbaya at my telly, I shall show further support by standing on my doorstep and bashing two pans together, while shouting long live the king.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2023 03:33

The sovereign never dies. That's what it means. That's why the Royal Standard never flies at half mast.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2023 03:34

Do people have no understanding of history and tradition?

This ^.

There is always a king/queen because it's a role, not a person, as in the proclamation: 'The King is dead. Long live the King'

It's an advantage of a monarchical system that the role of King/Queen continues uninterrupted on the death of the current recumbent.

I'm not saying monarchy is perfect, just trying to explain how it works. And people glued to the pomp and ceremony may indeed feel included by having a way to join in.

dudsville · 30/04/2023 08:30

Maybe it will be like a Dr Who episode, all the folks who do stand up in front of their telly to chant will be doing so in the deadpan, possessed way and then turn into duchy biscuits.

I don't believe there's a tradition and history of standing in front of your telly chanting 'may the king live forever' but I'm happy to be corrected

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2023 08:57

Only because they didn't have TV before 1953. People will have said it. Having said that, it is a very cheesy idea.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/04/2023 08:58

People have sung Zadock the Priest, with that line in it, since it was composed.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/04/2023 09:00

Well bollocks to that is all l can say.

I will be going out somewhere where hopefully it won’t be full of people. I will not be watching that shite, or chanting shite either .

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 30/04/2023 09:11

Did they do that for the Queen’s coronation?

Or did they not have televisions then? Or maybe they were less common?

I thought the Queen would live forever. I thought she’d be sitting there at the end of the world going, “Philip, I won..!”

User17439876 · 30/04/2023 09:15

It will be the same silly people that clapped the NHS

sonicmum2002 · 30/04/2023 22:37

If I was drinking tea when I read this, it would've been sprayed all over my phone screen.

otherwayup · 30/04/2023 22:46

Sounds sensible.
Let's face it, it's going to take until eternity for him to gain any kind of popularity.

Very few people owned one - but a small number did (my grandmother bought one with inheritance from an elderly aunt along with two fur coats ) - I'd imagine that some people would have done, but most had half the street in their front rooms for the service. As so few had it, I don't suppose that there were any particular requests were made, and as churchgoing was far more prevalent, there would have been more saying prayers on the Sunday.

I don't know of any tradition that involves chanting at a television.

Not in my name, for all this is supposed to be a slimmed down coronation, the security is costing £135 million. Just imagine what good could be done with that money. Just like the ridiculous police presence round Rishi Sunak's car in London this week, must have been at least 40 police either on pushbikes or running surrounding the cars, what a waste of money.

It's disgusting, the country is struggling and all that money wasted it makes me sick

Justathrowawaycomment · 30/04/2023 23:52

He's the King of England, not fucking Mumm-Ra.

TwoMonthsOff · 30/04/2023 23:56

@dudsville 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
