Is your living room tidy right now?

Would you be happy for a guest to pop in right now? Or would you need time to tidy?

We are generally quite tidy but DH is recovering from an op so there's medication strewn about, pillows and blankets in the sofa and to keep the dog entertained, there's a box that's part shredded. It needs dusting and hoovering and there's a pile of washing that's ready to go in the washing machine.

Our teens have just cleaned the kitchen from last night as we ate super late and everyone had had long days at work so couldn't be bothered.

I'm feeling a bit urgh about tidying up but know I'd feel mortified if someone knocked right now.

Yes. Always tidy up straight after anything that makes mess.

willowstar · 22/04/2023 23:26

Yes. I make a big effort to keep it tidy at all times. I just feel more relaxed with it like that.

Yes, same here too. We tidy as we go so it never builds up.

DiscoBeat · 22/04/2023 23:47

There's no 'stuff' about but there's a sated Labrador who still smells of his marrow bone from earlier and there is hair on the carpet, even though I hoovered this morning. And the cushions are either on the floor or all on one sofa (thanks to the Labrador). The hall is more of a mess - kids left their shoes all over the place and their school bags and pe bags too.

TheChosenTwo · 22/04/2023 23:52

Yes, it looks so lovely and tidy! Coincidentally (or perhaps not) Dh is away this weekend 😂

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/04/2023 23:52

It could do with a hoover but otherwise okay. The weather this week has been so nice I washed all the sofa covers and throws, so everything is relatively free of cat hair for a short window too!

MyMachineAndMe · 22/04/2023 23:57

Our living room is almost always tidy; our dining room is always a mess. There are books and other bits and pieces on the table, the toy box is overflowing although the dc don't really play with the toys any more, the Lego is on and next to the storage boxes rather than in them and the bookshelf gave up the ghost ages ago so now the books and magazines are just piled up on it.

ginsparkles · 23/04/2023 00:00

Downstairs is pretty tidy, we have to put things away to stop the dog chewing things she shouldn't!!

Floor needs a mop though!

Caspianberg · 23/04/2023 05:44

I don’t keep it tidy just for guests though, we keep it tidy for ourselves. I can’t relax in mess.
So generally every room is clean and tidy, and just toys out in living room or playroom depending where toddler is playing. But we ‘reset’ before lunch and bed every day, so it doesn’t build up and all toys are tidy. Easier to find one lost puzzle piece if it’s only been lost an hour or so in that room rather than days.

Zippedydoo123 · 23/04/2023 05:46

Me and 18 year old d's are tidy freaks.

Abacusporttaco · 23/04/2023 05:54

I keep my house clean and tidy. It’s big and it can easily get away from me if I don’t. That said, I do have help.

Littlebluebellwoods · 22/04/2023 22:11

To be honest, yes it is. I don’t like leaving mess around, I tidy as I go, so it’s always tidy,

can I ask though, why do you have your dirty laundry in your living room?

Due to the layout, its about 1.5 meters away from the washing machine. I'd asked the children to bring down their uniforms (the whites went in the machine, the darks were pending) and its the most convenient place to put it without it being in the way of the back door etc.

No not really, but I wouldn't mind if people came round, if they could be magically transported into the living room. The other rooms are generally worse. Kitchen and bathrooms are not visitor friendly ATM. I need to do a proper clear out but first I need to clear out the results of the previous clear outs!

megletthesecond · 23/04/2023 06:54

Yes. Always tidy, it's the one room teen DD doesn't go in.
Rest of the house, bombsite.

YukoandHiro · 23/04/2023 06:54

God no! But it's all toys, so if we had a playroom it would be a very different story

Pahpahpotato · 23/04/2023 06:56

yea, it’s alright, altho could do with a hoover. The kitchen is a bit of a war zone, but the sitting room and snug are both tidy as I tend to blitz them both after putting hurricane DC to bed and before sitting down for my evening. I usually do the kitchen too, but my DH appeared with a Chinese last night, and it was my birthday yesterday, so I thought ‘fuck that’ and ate my body weight in noodles instead 🤣

MissCrowley · 23/04/2023 07:34

The cushions need a plump, there's a pair of DHs trainers in here and the dogs bone in the middle of the floor.. I'd be fine with someone coming in.

MissCrowley · 23/04/2023 07:35

@NotTooOldPaul won't that mean that there's two weeks worth of dust though when you get home from holiday?

ThrallsWife · 23/04/2023 09:12

Nope. It's in need of a declutter that didn't happen before the house move over a year ago because I was busy with work.

It's currently sporting 3 separate piles of marking that needs doing by tomorrow.

And I have more piles of things I rarely get to do during term-time, some of which will be tackled over the bank holiday weekend.

MissMarplesbag · 23/04/2023 09:15

It's clean but definitely messy and cluttered but for a good reason. We celebrated Eid on Friday so there's bags of gifts everywhere. It will get sorted eventually but for now I'm drinking ☕& eating toast while mnetting.

AP5Diva · 23/04/2023 09:16

“I don’t keep it tidy just for guests though, we keep it tidy for ourselves. I can’t relax in mess.“

We are the same as you. I can’t even leave the washing up for five minutes after eating.

DelurkingAJ · 23/04/2023 09:23

Untidy but clean. There’s the pile of papers that always builds up on the side table and both DSs have toys out. I wouldn’t blink about visitors turning up (except that I’m still in my dressing gown so 15 minutes to dress would be required!). None of us are naturally tidy and we’re still working out where things live having moved late last year. But all my friends houses are similar.

TroysMammy · 23/04/2023 09:33

It doesn't matter if your living room is tidy or not because no one on MN is going to open the door but start a thread asking if they are unreasonable or not.

AuntieMarys · 23/04/2023 09:33

Yes. Only 2 of us. I can't bear mess

WithIcePlease · 23/04/2023 09:42

Yes
DC have moved out
It's bliss coming back to a clean tidy house
