Is your living room tidy right now?

Would you be happy for a guest to pop in right now? Or would you need time to tidy?

We are generally quite tidy but DH is recovering from an op so there's medication strewn about, pillows and blankets in the sofa and to keep the dog entertained, there's a box that's part shredded. It needs dusting and hoovering and there's a pile of washing that's ready to go in the washing machine.

Our teens have just cleaned the kitchen from last night as we ate super late and everyone had had long days at work so couldn't be bothered.

I'm feeling a bit urgh about tidying up but know I'd feel mortified if someone knocked right now.

Yup. It doesn’t get used in the warmer months. So it’s practically untouched. It’s an adult room - the kids don’t really go in there.

Beaverbridge · 22/04/2023 20:00

No, grandchildren were here overnight, toys pulled out lying everywhere. Can't be bothered. Get it tomo!.

Caspianberg · 22/04/2023 20:00

Yes.
The room itself is tidy, no clutter or mess, just a pile of duplo lego on the rug that Ds is currently playing with. So no problem if guests.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 22/04/2023 20:04

Yeah wouldn't bother me, just a few cups on the coffee table. My dc are older though.

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/04/2023 20:06

There's stuff strewn over the coffee table at the moment but there's fresh flowers and candles lit and the place is more or less clean so yes guests (who presumably I know and care about enough to welcome in) would be welcome.

pimplebum · 22/04/2023 20:22

Ithe key to tidy I think is regular clear outs. I've reduced toys down to 4- 6 ikea cubes per child and keep reducing crap we just don't use clothes , shoes , extra cheese graters all go if they don't get used regularly

... and don't give a crap who sees my house in any state

justanotherdrama · 22/04/2023 20:24

God people just rocking up is my worst nightmare - thankfully none of my friends do that!!!!
My house is "lived in" it's not horrendous it's clean but there's lots of toys and washing and stuff about as were limited on space.
I'd love a playroom I could just shut the door on!

slimdown · 22/04/2023 20:28

Yes, although kids are older now. But have always kept toys out of the living room, obviously they would bring one and play with it, but we don't store toys here so there isn't much to get messy except sofa cushions!

Kyse · 22/04/2023 20:32

It's fine, in MN land it would probably be filthy but Grin I would be fine having anyone o er

NutButters · 22/04/2023 20:37

Always fine here- not a show home but tidy enough. My sunglasses and laptop are on the table, cushions could do with a plump 🤷‍♀️

AndLadyMondegreen · 22/04/2023 20:38

Well there's an empty Amazon box on the floor that the cat has been playing in.
And the dining table has 6 freshly painted shelves drying on it.

Apart from that, it's pretty pristine

BeyondMyWits · 22/04/2023 20:39

It is a bit messy, untidy but hoovered. Anyone is welcome anyhow. People who would whinge about the mess don't get asked back. Win,win.

Dacadactyl · 22/04/2023 20:39

Yes it's tidy, aside from my bra having been discarded in the middle of the floor once DS went to bed!

dudsville · 22/04/2023 20:40

It is, but it's only 2 of us and some dogs. Nothing goes on the floor, everything has a place or it's discarded. Dusting and vacuuming happens weekly. The whole house is the same.

SquidwardBound · 22/04/2023 20:41

No part of my house is tidy right now. There is no way I’d be happy with no notice visitors.

30 minutes notice and I could panic make the downstairs guest appropriate though.

heartbreakhotel20 · 22/04/2023 20:43

Nope covered in toys and I can't be bothered to move.
Always make sure kitchen and bathroom are clean

lucysmam · 22/04/2023 20:46

Yes, apart from the crochet stuff I've been using on and off today, and some photo's of Nanna that dd2 was struggling to put away last night it's fine.

They'd have to ignore me sprawled on the sofa in my sushi hoodie, covered with one of dd2's blankets though. I am certainly in no fit state for guests unless I know them well enough to not care about that!

Goodread1 · 22/04/2023 20:51

No it's like a freaky 🤪 in junk shop,

I am sooo embarrassed to have anybody come over to vist,

I usaully meet friends ect and have a catch up chat and coffee in a thankfully cafes or their homes...

This is so timely! My friend dropped round totally unannounced this afternoon (I was out) and she afterwards remarked how tidy my living room looked – yes, she had looked through the window Confused

Omg! That's so... I don't know but my goodness, fancy peering through someone's window!

No.. it looks like a Hot wheels factory about after a bomb explosion

Oh my god! People like your friend are why I love living on the 3rd floor! Confused

I can't imagine a scenario where I'd go peer through someone's windows when the door wasn't answered, unless I really genuinely thought they might be lying dead or injured and helpless on the floor.

SpuytenDuyvil · 22/04/2023 20:57

Yes. House is always tidy, bathrooms clean and no clutter. There may be some dishes in the sink but I can't see from here. But, it's only DH and me home now. And a small but mean cat. There was a lot more hair on the floor when we had the dog, so it was harder to keep up.

Kensukesfifedom · 22/04/2023 21:02

I don't live in a show home so my house is lived in and I am not ashamed of it should anyone call in expected.

However, if they're calling in unexpectedly then they won't be looking for a show home, will they?

I'm a little 😮 at those who keep their homes - their living spaces- to a magazine standard in case someone drops by.

Squirrel26 · 22/04/2023 21:05

Cleaned the living room and kitchen earlier so unexpected visitors are welcome in there, but I ran out of steam before getting to the bathrooms so unfortunately as soon as they need the loo they’ll have to leave!

AlltheFs · 22/04/2023 21:08

Tidy but filthy, husband is ripping out the fireplace in the dining room and all of downstairs is awful. But I can’t be bothered to clean whilst it’s going on. It’s a small cottage and not many doors internally so it’s just a building site really.
The kitchen is clean and I did the bathroom but the rest is vile. Dust, cobwebs and minging floors.
