How much do you drink, honestly

As a child from an alcoholic home, I've always been a bit aware of this and my own drinking. But I think it's really easy to be qushonest with yourself. When I lived with my ex and during lockdown, I'd probably have a bottle of beer most nights. I cut that a few years ago because living on your own I think its a slippery slope. I generally don't drink during the week. If I'm at home on a weekend I may have 3 or 4 at most over the course of a weekend. If I'm with friends or family I probably hit the recommended weekly unit limit. I enjoy the taste of it but rarely drink to get drunk. But of course it us something probably more aware of than others.

Among my friends I generally have two extremes. Some people who drink most nights and some who rarely have a drink at all. So what is normal?

Qushonest is meant to be dishonest 🤣

I don't drink on my own or every night but I do work in a very social industry in central London so there is often the odd midweek event and then I have an active social life on the weekends. It's not uncommon to go for a wine at lunch with colleagues and also a few after work. It's difficult to keep track of the amount I consume but it is definitely over the recommended weekly amount. I'd say maybe 40 units a week. Mostly wine. I'm early 30's and I'm not too concerned yet but I do know I need to cut that back. I'm certainly trying to completely eliminate the midweek drinks.

I am always completely honest with the Doctors how much I have and I've heard they often double whatever anyone says 😂so they're probably assuming I'm more like 80 units!

I'm on the don't really drink end of the spectrum. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year I will have a drink, I just never fancy it to be honest

I don't drink - like you OP ive seen the impact of alcoholism. I find people don't believe that I don't drink as I too work in a very sociable industry where drinking is the norm.

BusterGonad · 20/04/2023 10:58

At home, maybe a beer 2 or 3 nights a week or a glass of wine. If I'm out drinking with friends, once every 3 weeks maybe I'll have about 4 or 5 beers. I'm a bit of a 90s binge drinker but the only time I drank that much at home was during covid when I always had a box of wine opened. Obviously now I'll have a drink 2 or 3 nights a week, if that.

peachescariad · 20/04/2023 11:00

3 bottles of wine a week. Usually Thursday - Sunday.

Mutabiliss · 20/04/2023 11:02

I don't really drink. I don't really like it anymore, and can't hack the hangovers which just feel like a waste of time. I did binge drink in my youth (late 90s/early 2000s). I've never drunk at home on my own though, I don't see the point. We don't have any alcohol in the house, unless there's a long-forgotten bottle of wine in a cupboard somewhere.

I'll have a drink with a meal if I'm out in a restaurant occasionally, or a pint or two of cider at a festival once or twice a year. That's about it.

PauliesWalnuts · 20/04/2023 11:05

I tend to only drink socially - I just never got into the habit of drinking at home, or that glass of wine whilst cooking the tea. I'm also a fussy drinker - I don't like kind of beer drink, or red wine, or brown spirits. I don't like tea or coffee or cola either! I only really drink a really dry white wine, or champagne (not that I can afford it often), or something like a mojito.

In addition to that, my social life has changed - I rarely go out for drinks; I don't have kids and my social life now consists mainly of hill walking, and the allotment - both of which I drive to. So I probably only drink the equivalent of maybe five or six bottles of wine a year?

FourTeaFallOut · 20/04/2023 11:07

Normally, I'll have a bottle of beer or have a glass of wine with dinner once a week-ish. I had half a bottle of wine last Friday and that would happen every few months or so. About two or three times a year I drink like I did in my student days which is great fun but the collosal hangover payback makes it a self limiting activity.

StarDolphins · 20/04/2023 11:08

My mother, father, sister & niece are all alcoholics- 2 have died from it.

I drink 2 glasses 👓 f Prosecco on a Fri, Sat & sun & nothing ever in the week. 12.3 units!

fidgetcube · 20/04/2023 11:09

I don’t drink, maybe a weak cocktail once a year, but apart from that I don’t. I don’t like the taste of most of it and tbh I don’t see the point of drinking.

im late 28, and have never particularly drunk, maybe one drink once a year.

DHsPoorBack · 20/04/2023 11:14

I used to drink every evening, which sounds terrible, but it was that replica Malibu you get from Lidl which has the same alcohol content as a bottle of wine. So essentially a finger depth shot of "wine" then filled up with diet coke.

I could have 2 or 3 of those an evening, and it was like half a glass of wine, I just liked the taste. That holiday coconut smell.

However, I've stopped having them, for the last couple of months (supply issue, couldn't get hold of it) and I have to say, I'm wider awake in the mornings, and eating less junk as I'd have nibbles with my drink as well.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 20/04/2023 11:16

I rarely drink.
My dad is a functioning alcoholic, he's gotten better over the years but as a kid he was always drunk over the weekends and it put me off.
At best I'll have one-two glasses of rum & coke maybe once a year.

WandaWonder · 20/04/2023 11:17

One bottle of wine week, sometimes a whisky as well

xogossipgirlxo · 20/04/2023 11:19

When not going out, half a bottle of wine/prosecco per month. In the summer some odd cider when relaxing in the garden. When going out, few beers in the pub (but I don't go out often). I enjoy glass of scotch 3-4 times a year.

Gwenhwyfar · 20/04/2023 11:20

I'm just about within the 14 units, but have moved to a country where the recommendation is about 7 for women. My doctor has told me to cut down, but that doesn't suit my lifestyle unfortunately so I'll continue to have 3/4 drinks 3-4 nights a week.
I never lie about it, why would I?

TheQueenOfOverthinking · 20/04/2023 11:23

0 because I have alcoholics in the family and, at various times in my life, have gone from 2 or 3 x a week to drinking every night.
It really is a slippery slope and, after a couple of family members suddenly suffering the consequences of their alcoholism, I had a huge wake-up call and decided I didn’t want to risk joining them.

blackheartsgirl · 20/04/2023 11:24

Don’t drink during the week and often a bottle of wine over 3 nights at the weekend. Some weeks nothing at all.

I’ve seen what alcoholism/dependency does to people in my family so I watch what I drink

Nimbostratus100 · 20/04/2023 11:28

one or two glasses a year maybe

kezziecakes · 20/04/2023 11:29

I'm on the don't really drink end of the spectrum now. I love the taste of wine and, occasionally beer on a sunny day, but don't often buy it at home. I will drink when on a night out but don't do this very often. Now that I'm almost 40 I find I feel so bad, depressed and anxious, the day after drinking it's not worth it for me.

Nanatokidsdogshampsters · 20/04/2023 11:31

2 bicardis 5 nights a week at home.
If we are out then it could be 4 bicardis.

HereWeGo456 · 20/04/2023 11:38

I drink, maybe, once or twice a month 🤔

It's very, very rare I drink in the house if there's just me and DH, would only drink if we had friends around. And I would have a few if we were invited out, or if we have a free evening to go to the local pub.

Any time I drink I have maybe 4-6 drinks, which is enough for me to be merry. I can't remember the last time I was drunk, or had a hangover (but I do have a rare fuzzy head first thing the next morning.)

Sanch1 · 20/04/2023 11:44

Quite a lot! 2-4 bottles of Prosecco/wine over thurs-sat depending on plans, what's happening.

MumLass · 20/04/2023 11:46

Too much! I do track how much I drink and it's 30 units a week. I use it to relax, and I'm hugely stressed thanks to separation from my husband, 2 kids, trying to sell the house....

SnappilyMarried · 20/04/2023 11:47

Sunday to Thursday: Nothing.
Friday and Saturday nights: Two glasses of wine, one or two spirits/mixers.
