How much do you drink, honestly

As a child from an alcoholic home, I've always been a bit aware of this and my own drinking. But I think it's really easy to be qushonest with yourself. When I lived with my ex and during lockdown, I'd probably have a bottle of beer most nights. I cut that a few years ago because living on your own I think its a slippery slope. I generally don't drink during the week. If I'm at home on a weekend I may have 3 or 4 at most over the course of a weekend. If I'm with friends or family I probably hit the recommended weekly unit limit. I enjoy the taste of it but rarely drink to get drunk. But of course it us something probably more aware of than others.

Among my friends I generally have two extremes. Some people who drink most nights and some who rarely have a drink at all. So what is normal?

Nothing, occasionally have some zero alcohol cider or beer, or zero G&T, maybe once a fortnight or so.

Brews, kombucha, flavoured tonic, decent coffee, CBD drinks, fresh juice, mocktails, occasional red bull if out dancing.

I used to drink but can't be arsed with it now. I miss a glass of wine when cooking but it's not worth the hangover, shit sleep and crappy skin.

GreyCarpet · 20/04/2023 13:12

I go out on a Friday/Saturday night and probably have 3 or 4 pints. Generally no more than that. I dont have the capacoty for more! I might have one small bottle of beer during the week with my boyfriend.

I don't drink on consecutive nights so if I drink on Friday, I don't drink on Saturday.

Funkyslippers · 20/04/2023 13:14

I try not to drink during the week but I might have 1 or 2 if we go out or if DD1 is home from uni as she buys spirits or makes cocktails, things I'd never do on my own. Sometimes I'll have 1 or 2 glasses of wine on a Fri and Sat night

I generally drink quite a lot Thursday to Sunday night although what and how much depends on what I'm doing. I'd say on average a bottle of red on a Thursday night, maybe nothing or a couple of cans on a Friday if dh fancies a drink, then Saturday maybe another bottle of wine either at home or out having a meal. Sunday similar to Friday nothing or a few beers. If I go out out then I'm a typical binge drinker and if with dh can drink 6pints/ ladies night probably a bottle of prosecco and a couple of spirits, this is roughly once a month.

Wiaa · 20/04/2023 13:19

Oh as for what I tell the doctor - I ask how many units in a bottle wine and say double that

trickyfriendsone · 20/04/2023 13:22

I really don't drink much literally only on nights/days out and because of my work schedule that's not often

I do tend to go overboard when I do drink, I don't end up completely leg less but I definitely get a hangover

NDerbys32 · 20/04/2023 13:25

I drink rarely now. 2011 I got badly drunk and it involved red wine. I felt hellish after and swore that would be the last time.
Over the years, it's just dwindled almost naturally until now it's roughly a beer every 4 - 6 weeks, and sometimes not even that.
I worked in a world that dealt with the effects of alcohol every day for 30 years and saw some horrific results from heavy drinking and my own family all use every excuse to drink heavily. I just can't do it, watch it or listen to the same drivel they trot out once they're four or five drinks in, so one of the reasons I put distance between us.
Thankfully, my wife and son are with me on that particular page.
I do get odd looks and the occasional comment if I order a non alcoholic drink but I can live with that.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 20/04/2023 13:25

2 bottles of wine a day, pretty much every day, so way over my units. I know I have to cut down or stop. I didn’t drink at all for 7 years & often wish I hadn’t started again.

HaveYouSeenMySerotonin · 20/04/2023 13:30

I used to drink a bottle of wine a night, often with a spirit top up in order to sleep/pass out. I got to the point where I knew I was really hurting myself. I now have three or four glasses of wine on a Friday but that's it. I struggle over holiday periods where there's more social obligation to drink daily.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 20/04/2023 13:35

Nothing. Now.

before I stopped 20 months ago I drank on average a bottle of wine a night. I had a drink problem

SirChenjins · 20/04/2023 13:38

Rarely - I'd have one or 2 drinks every few weeks, often less. It just doesn't really feature in my life.

Viviennemary · 20/04/2023 13:41

Very occasionally about once every three months I have a glass of wine. And a few glasses on Cristmas day.,

Ragwort · 20/04/2023 13:42

Two or three large glasses of wine most evenings. I drink at home .. I like a glass of wine before my evening meal and a glass or two with it. I don't ever get 'drunk' and don't go 'out' drinking. Occasionally I will have an alcohol free evening.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 20/04/2023 13:44

I am also the child of an alcoholic. As a teenager I definitely went through a few years of drinking excessively and did some dangerous things.

Now I'm in my 30s and for many, many years I've not drunk much at all. I very rarely drink at home. If I go out I have 1 or 2 drinks. That's just how I prefer it. I don't like feeling out of control.

Kinsters · 20/04/2023 13:49

I don't drink really. I'll have a glass or two if we're out for dinner (once a month, if that), more at a party (once or twice a year) but at home I never drink. I might get a bottle of wine in if we're having people over for dinner or a bottle of gin so I can make g&ts. It's not something that I automatically have in at all though, except cooking wine.

tattygrl · 20/04/2023 13:53

Barely at all. Occasionally (a couple of times a month, absolute maximum) I will have a pint (beer or cider) or a glass of red wine on an evening out. I have to psych myself up for that, and usually only have it because I don't want any of the soft drink options and don't want to be sat there without anything at all. Alcohol instantly makes me feel queasy, it's expensive and hangovers aren't worth it.

Andywarholswig · 20/04/2023 13:58

I mainly drink socially or on holiday. I don’t drink at home unless we have friends over for dinner or a bbq and then will have a couple of G&Ts or a beer. Most weeks I don’t drink but if I go out I will have 2-3 drinks over an evening - never wine as it makes me feel awful

Creepyrosemary · 20/04/2023 14:02

Maybe 3 glasses of wine per year. DH drinks more, he tends to go for a beer with a friend once a month and he'll drink 2-3. We're middle aged and drank more when we were in our twenties.

TheVanguardSix · 20/04/2023 14:05

1-2 glasses of wine or a beer per year, if that. It just doesn’t occur to me to drink.
I wasn’t always like this. I never was much of a drinker really, but I certainly drank more socially when I was younger. I really slowed my roll around the age of 35. But when I hit 40, I just stopped drinking pretty much completely. I’m 51. Never crave it now.

QueenCoconut · 20/04/2023 14:05

Never. DH doesn’t drink either.

Gingerlygreen · 20/04/2023 14:07

A couple of times a year I might have a cider, I'm not keen on the taste of alcohol or the feeling of being drunk.

I wish I could feel the same way about sugar though because I really struggle with overeating junk food.

YouveGotToGrooveIt · 20/04/2023 14:08

Little.

Maybe 1-3 drinks, once a month? If I am being honest, that is probably OVER estimating.

RuthTopp · 20/04/2023 14:10

Don't drink , dh doesn't either so no alcohol about the house. Not for any religious reason we just never have felt the inclination

fairtrauchled · 20/04/2023 14:12

Very little.I don't drink in the house unless we have friends round and then I'll have a couple of glasses of wine or gin and tonic. If I go out I may or may not have a couple of alcoholic drinks.Maybe have 2-4 drinks a month if that.

AnxiousPixie · 20/04/2023 14:15

I drink every day. 'only' 2 small glasses of wine. I think it is still too much but nothing else 'feels' the same as a glad of wine on an evening. I would like to cut down but I struggle with what to replace it with. Do you all just drink tea? Pop? Water?
