How much do you drink, honestly

As a child from an alcoholic home, I've always been a bit aware of this and my own drinking. But I think it's really easy to be qushonest with yourself. When I lived with my ex and during lockdown, I'd probably have a bottle of beer most nights. I cut that a few years ago because living on your own I think its a slippery slope. I generally don't drink during the week. If I'm at home on a weekend I may have 3 or 4 at most over the course of a weekend. If I'm with friends or family I probably hit the recommended weekly unit limit. I enjoy the taste of it but rarely drink to get drunk. But of course it us something probably more aware of than others.

Among my friends I generally have two extremes. Some people who drink most nights and some who rarely have a drink at all. So what is normal?

I drink every day. 'only' 2 small glasses of wine. I think it is still too much but nothing else 'feels' the same as a glad of wine on an evening. I would like to cut down but I struggle with what to replace it with. Do you all just drink tea? Pop? Water?

I don’t drink tea at all, or most fizzy drinks. In the evening I either drink water or soda water with lime or elderflower cordial.

MaryJean87 · 20/04/2023 14:32

One or 2 bottles a week and maybe the odd vodka during the week.

Lovearoseeeeeeeeeeee · 20/04/2023 14:32

I drink loads more than any of you it seems! A couple of G&Ts monday-thursday evenings. Single shots only though. A whole bottle on both Friday and Saturday nights and a couple of glasses of wine with Sunday lunch.

I love drinking and the social aspect of it in our cosy village pub, early doors. All my friends drink the same as i do. It has zero implications in my life apart from weight gain i suppose, which i manage. My life is fun and full of laughs, my husband and i enjoy each others company and i think having a good social life like this is important for us.

I drink 2 bottles of wine over the course of a week - which I spread out over Thursday to Sunday and always in the evening. I make sure I have 2/3 alcohol free nights a week. During weeks when I'm on holiday, it probably creeps up to 3 bottles over a week. I never go out drinking or binge drink. Body can't handle it.

I do think I should try and cut down a bit. However, it's my only real treat? I don't like sugary things like cakes, puddings or chocolate. I recognise it's not healthy to drink this much and that I am taking risks by doing so.

GobbieMaggie · 20/04/2023 14:39

Zero, I’m teetotal and always have been.

Skybluepinky · 20/04/2023 14:40

1 drink at Xmas normally an Irish coffee.

Florawest · 20/04/2023 14:46

Never drank, no interest in it saw too many clowns drunk and annoying, drink is grand in moderation.

Now wish I could have minimum interest in carbs, can’t get enough them, v hard to cut back or say no.

Dymaxion · 20/04/2023 14:57

@TooOldForThisNonsense can I ask how you managed to stop ? I am pretty much where you were and would rather not be !

It is evening where I am and I am sat with a glass of milk 😂 some nights I'll have water.

If it was cold I'd probably have a decaf tea.

My DP does not drink. During lockdown he struggled and on a visit to the GP was asked if he is drinking more alcohol. The GP looked concerned when he said yes. I intervened and said he usually drinks nothing, by saying yes he means he is drinking 1 beer a week. The most I have ever seen him drink.
I drink a beer or glass of wine about 3 or 4 nights a week.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 20/04/2023 15:04

I don't really drink. I last had a glass of wine on NYE.

My dads' parents were both alcoholics and I had an alcoholic client - they all destroyed their lives because of their addictions.

I don't mind the taste but I don't like being drunk or how it makes me feel the next day.

I'm on the don't really drink end of the spectrum. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year I will have a drink, I just never fancy it to be honest

So when do you choose to drink?

ItsCalledAConversation · 20/04/2023 15:05

At home - nothing unless I fancy it and then 2 glasses at a time (waste of a bottle) maybe twice a month max

Out with friends - 3 or 4 these days or I feel shit the next day

Im 40 and have 2 kids.

leatherchaps · 20/04/2023 15:05

A thimblefull at Christmas.

I'm trying to cut down.

blahblahblah1654 · 20/04/2023 15:06

Currently zero as I'm pregnant but before then maybe half a bottle of Prosecco once or twice a week. A lot more during lockdown. My FIL is an alcoholic, he's obese, diabetic and has had mouth cancer so I know the mess it puts people in.

JeepersCreeperrs · 20/04/2023 12:45

Zero, honestly.

however my parents both drink every day, as do my husbands parents. My husband thinks this is normal, and also drinks every day.

I just personally think it’s horrid stuff, not in taste, in what it does to your body and can’t see the appeal. I used to drink, but as I’ve got older I don’t see the point. Drinking is for getting drunk, which I have no interest in now I’m no longer 23 with zero responsibilities.

I don't think drinking is for getting drunk. I really enjoy finding a lovely red wine to go with a meal with steak or a baked Camembert and cold meats/olives for instance. I would have a glass and really enjoy the taste that compliments the meal. I don't have it to get drunk. Same with a crisp white with a chicken or fish dish.

MintJulia · 20/04/2023 15:08

This year, one glass of cider in March, one glass of Prosecco this month.

Chemo played havoc with my taste beds but it must be marvellous for my liver 😊

coodawoodashooda · 20/04/2023 15:10

I stopped late December. I used to think it was for a year but hoped can't see myself choosing alcohol again. I do enjoy alcohol free drinks. They hit the spot just fine.

kitsuneghost · 20/04/2023 15:12

once a week. Typically
at home: 1 bottle of wine and 3-4 double mixers
in pub: 5-8 pints cider
so maybe around 20 units a week

LaylaLjungberg · 20/04/2023 15:12

I’m an all or nothing drinker. I’ve had zero alcohol since NYE. I am jealous of people who can have a few drinks, it’s makes me feel so blue the next day even after a couple.

mosiacmaker · 20/04/2023 15:13

We used to have a glass or two of wine most weeknights (bad lockdown habit but I find myself feeling the effects of wine really strongly at home so have always been able to stop after two small glasses as genuinely feel pissed at this point 😂) but now we hardly drink at all weeknights (we have been alcohol free G&Ts!).

But all social events seem to feature alcohol, usually going out on the weekend will feature something like 2 x cocktails, 3 x glass wine as standard…

…then if night is a big night with a group there will be additional drinks like 3 x tequila soda, 3 x margarita, maybe some shots.

I can also drink pretty much bottomless rosé with ice on summer holidays - but I wouldn’t dare count these!

gogohmm · 20/04/2023 15:13

I don't drink at home that much, if we aren't going out on a Friday or a Saturday we may share a bottle of wine or have a couple of g&t's. We do drink out though - 2-3 pints in the pub (me) 3-4 pints (him) on a typical Saturday night at the pub, I sometimes switch to g&t after one pint as I'm watching my calories, this reduces alcohol as well. After choir practice we tend to have a drink too. If we eat out we do buy wine or beer, just depends. I probably drink 10-15 units but spread over 3 days with 4 alcohol free days

Fatkittythinkitty · 20/04/2023 15:14

About a bottle of wine a week. Usually spread over a couple of nights at the weekend. I can't really tolerate alcohol very well now I'm late 40s though so I'm thinking of stopping altogether. I like the taste, like that chilled out feeling I get after a glass but feel shit and headachey the next day.

I’ve really been feeling this lately which is why we stopped the midweek wines - would just feel sad and anxious and also wake up with anxiety coursing through every limb (this is what it felt like) at 2am if I’d had any alcohol that evening.

ItsCalledAConversation · 20/04/2023 15:18

That’s how I feel, after drinking. Wake up 3am with heart hammering and the doom/dread.

Next day headaches, anxious and snappiness. After 3 medium glasses for shame
