Where would you have once liked to visit but now wouldn’t go?

For me San Francisco. Would have loved to visit Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge etc but seeing the reports of the drug epidemic /fentanyl use just makes it seem like it would no longer be a place to feel safe whilst sightseeing.

Where would you no longer wish to visit?

We went to Tunisia in the late 90s and we’re blown away by the culture. We discussed then going to Libya the next year but didn’t. I don’t think it’ll be safe there any time soon, sadly.

Russia. Always fancied it.Oh well- first world problem really.

Lviv... DH's great grandparents emigrated from there and I wanted to take ds to visit his roots but obviously not now...

I went to California and SF in 2019 and had an absolutely fantastic time, is it so much worse now?

@PermanentTemporary there is a lot more open air drug usage with a marked number of deaths related to fentanyl.

i think preliminary data shows a slight decline on the number of fentanyl related deaths but it’s still working out to an average of 2 per day.

Whole Foods have just announced the closure of their downtown store due to staff safety issues regarding open air drug use.

It’s a really sad state of affairs.

I would have loved to go to Russia, I'm only in my 20's so hopefully it's do-able at some point in my lifetime.

Sadly, China - at least for the foreseeable.
I was lucky enough to go to Moscow & St Petersburg 5 years ago and it was an amazing trip. Had always hoped that I would return there, but I think that probably won't happen now 😢

I went to SF around 18 years ago and was struck then by the levels of homelessness. Unlike anything I've ever seen in the U.K. - it's a massive problem in many parts of California I think and I'm not sure they have as many systems in place for people who are down on their luck.

Japan. Would still love to go but the environmental cost of the long-haul flight is just too much to stomach.

The Richat structure in Mauritania. Just not really worth risking my life to see!

There was a great train journey , based on the George Orwell book, that went from Wigan (honestly) through France , Russia , Mongolia , China and North Korea. It would always have been difficult to do whilst partner was working because of time and they have a job of a sensitive nature . We thought we would do it whilst retired.
Anyone reading Red Notice would strike Russia off the list , North Korea.......

I wanted to go to Russia as well, I really wanted to go on the Trans-Siberian railroad, go to the ballet, and of course, practice my Russian… I can probably practice my Russian other ways though…

While the government is pretty horrible, on a day-to-day perspective, and for tourist safety, China is still pretty accessible and open. I wouldn't rule it out.

RJ57 · 12/04/2023 10:15

China.

Nothing to do with how they are as a communist country, more that I learn't some things about the place in the interim that sounded a lot less like the sort of thing I'd want to pay money to see since.

Syria. Damascus was always on my bucket list. 😥

Damascus was a wonderful city. Syria was a lovely, interesting country to visit, despite being very aware of the Assad regime in the early 2000s.

Mine would be Yemen, but by the time we were living in the ME and were reasonably nearby, even though it was before the Arab Spring, it was not particularly safe for tourists — kidnapping tourists or foreign works to use as hostages in negotiations between tribes and governments was pretty much a way of life, even though they were usually treated as guests. I don’t suppose much of what I really wanted to see even exists any more, which feels self-indulgent given the famine. Same as Syria. I think of the people we met and wonder how many are dead or displaced.
