Where would you have once liked to visit but now wouldn’t go?

For me San Francisco. Would have loved to visit Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge etc but seeing the reports of the drug epidemic /fentanyl use just makes it seem like it would no longer be a place to feel safe whilst sightseeing.

Where would you no longer wish to visit?

Loads of people wanting to go to Russia!

It'll all shake down, hopefully, and you'll get to go.

The Stans are great for anyone wondering. Fascinating places. Azerbaijan too but ofc is terrible politically and especially wrt Armenia.

I've always wanted to go to New Orleans but sadly it seems to have gone way of San Francisco. I went to SF in 1999 and loved it! The Golden Gate Bridge was beautiful and Alcatraz was fascinating. Loved the cable cars too, it was like being in a movie! So sad to hear what it's become now, the drug problem and lack of a safety net for poor people seems to have created a hopeless situation for so many in America.😓

Me too...loved SF.
Thankfully l have been to New Orleans although didn't realise it is bad there now

Pakistan

Britain and the USA.Very glad I got to visit years ago. Wouldn’t go back now. Hell, I don’t even want to visit my home city of Melbourne after a few years away.

Does anyone else think this is quite an odd thread? So far on the no go list weve got Canada. US, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, China, every neighbour of Russia including Finland, India. That's quite a large chunk of the world

Bizarre thread.

youngestisapsycho · 13/04/2023 07:44

Yes bizarre… New Zealand and Canada are beautiful countries with so much to see..

FrenchFancie · 13/04/2023 08:54

I’ve been to Israel fairly recently, it was fine, did not feel threatened. Tons of tourists though (obviously I was part of the problem!). I would go again.

two sets of friends are (independently!) in Egypt at the moment and seem to be having a blast.

I’d love to go to Russia but can’t at the moment. Hopefully in the future.

im very fortunate in that I’ve been able to travel all over the shop and, generally speaking, you are safe if you follow advice and keep your wits about you. Ironically the only place I have been pickpocketed was in Tenerife! In the middle of a tourist resort (as a late teenager, not keeping my wits about me and being bloody stupid, so there you go!!)

Lollzi86 · 13/04/2023 09:48

Went to New Orleans last year. Never felt unsafe really, although I wouldn’t feel safe walking alone at night as a lone woman, got Ubers once it was after 9/10pm but to be honest that’s the same in the uk which is a shame but the reality. It’s a fantastic place to visit all in all. Also been to San Francisco and yes there are a lot of homeless people, but I never felt unsafe and the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz are worth it! Going back this year so I’ll update you

Saw a holiday to Uzbekistan advertised and thought of the Golden Road to Samarkand and the Silk Road and it all looked so exotic. But my daughters pointed out that it was next door to Afghanistan and probably not a good idea for their 80 year old mum to go swanning off!

Please don't write off Uzbekistan on that basis. The border with Afghanistan is short and in the far south of the country, hundreds of miles away from the Silk Road cities. I've been, and it was one of the cleanest and safest places I've ever been. I felt totally fine to wander about by myself.

For me, Myanmar and Syria. Perhaps it'll be possible to go there in my lifetime but it's certainly not an option for the foreseeable.

Shufflebumnessie · 13/04/2023 13:35

@RJ57 the only reason is my own irrational anxiety over concerns due to the fact the country borders Syria and Iraq (even though the logical part of me knows that we'd more than likely be miles away from the borders and in areas with no issues). I'm envious that you've been lucky enough to visit and hopefully I'll make it there one day.

Don't understand the significance of "Get tomato'd bitch"
What does that even mean and what country was this?

BMW6 · 13/04/2023 13:41

Did Russia in 1987, wonderfully different and very very weird.

TheVanguardSix · 13/04/2023 15:54

I’ll tell you what I wish I could recapture is my trip to Berlin right after the wall fell, when East Berlin was a dark ghost town, so slow and quiet… open, free but understandably still tied to its habits. Everyone was gone, it felt like. I imagine 1987 Russia had a similar feeling. The Soviet collapse was not far around the corner.

As said at a recent attack on Posie Parker in New Zealand, a country showing itself to be hostile to women….

If you write off a whole country because of a protest, there won’t be many places left to visit.

St Petersburg. I've always wanted to visit the Hermitage.

Beesandhoney123 · 07/09/2023 00:05

Russia, a literary and historical tour. Unlikely now, sadly. I don't think it ever was possible tbh.

The South Seas and follow a little in the footsteps of Somerset Maughan.

Isle of Skye, Montana, Blue Ridge Mountains.

It would be expensive too, and money has to be for other things, and then I'll be old and unable to afford or be too fragile perhaps to risk it and come home to beans on toast for tea forever. Can't eat memories or pay the bills with them.

Also dh way too poorly ( life limiting ) to even mention dreams to anyone.

Its not the same on Google earth.

sleepwouldbenice · 08/09/2023 00:33

Went to SF couple months ago, homelessness not worse that anywhere else, tourist areas and going on buses, going to baseball etc felt safe. Does stink of weed other than that was fine

Also been to Egypt and going again this year. Sadly won't again due to human rights record but as a country they have been through some terrible times

sleepwouldbenice · 08/09/2023 00:34

But not returning to USA if they re elect Trump

GarlicGrace · 08/09/2023 03:36

Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran. Always been fascinated by the region; should have gone there sooner. Now it's all been blown up and I'd probably get shot.

Catsmere · 08/09/2023 04:09

Just realised this thread is months old and I'd already replied.

CobraChicken · 08/09/2023 04:34

I really want to go to New York, but all the people I know who've been recently (and many times before) have said that now is not a good time for a "first impressions" visit 😞

user1477391263 · 08/09/2023 05:36

The rest of China. I saw quite a few bits of it in the early through mid 2000s. Have pretty much crossed it off the list now, as the combination of massive increases in surveillance plus the darkening record on safety/freedom would make me feel very uncomfortable.

user1477391263 · 08/09/2023 05:38

Have always longed to go to Cornwall, but the stories of over-tourism, clogged roads, the local housing crisis and (understandably) frustrated local Cornish people make me feel uncomfortable about the idea now.

Perhaps when both kids are over 18 (long way off!) we might visit OUTSIDE school holidays, via public transport and using only hotels. I’d love to see the unusual scenery and learn about the history of the place.

user1477391263 · 08/09/2023 05:40

Had plans to go to Senegal and Mali before I had my first child. Since 2012 or so, the whole region has become increasingly unstable; it’ll be a no-no for the foreseeable future.
