Where would you have once liked to visit but now wouldn’t go?

For me San Francisco. Would have loved to visit Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge etc but seeing the reports of the drug epidemic /fentanyl use just makes it seem like it would no longer be a place to feel safe whilst sightseeing.

Where would you no longer wish to visit?

Would have loved to visit Damascus.
Not so keen on visiting the US so much any more.
Wish I'd done more long haul travel about 10 years ago pre kids.

Saw a holiday to Uzbekistan advertised and thought of the Golden Road to Samarkand and the Silk Road and it all looked so exotic. But my daughters pointed out that it was next door to Afghanistan and probably not a good idea for their 80 year old mum to go swanning off!

Scotland now...I suppose none of us will be allowed back there any time soon.

What am I missing?

JamSandle · 12/04/2023 13:52

China for me as well.

Lcb123 · 12/04/2023 13:54

Damascus in Syria.
i wouldn’t think twice about going to San Francisco, and most of the places on here (New York, New Zealand, Caribbean)

What's happened in Jordan that make is off your list now @Shufflebumnessie ?

I went a few years ago and it was probably the most friendly country I've ever been to.

I've not kept up with the news in that area, so things might have changed that I dont know about.

Jordan is amazing, I work there a lot. Obv wouldn’t hang around on the Syria border but no need to travel that end of the country

Nowhere with a poor human rights record or capital punishment. Not anywhere from where the UK recognises asylum seekers or which holds political prisoners. To my shame, I went to quite a few places like this in my 20s and didn't even think about it. Luckily, this is much more of a concern for travellers and holidaymakers these days.
I also don't really want to go anywhere if my journey there will entail a big carbon footprint. Again, thankfully, people are much more conscious of this now.

I'd have liked to go on a cruise about 25 years ago - DH always said we'd do it for our 25th anniversary. But modern day cruise ships seem to me to be noisy some full of kids, and all look too big and busy. I don't think I'd like it. I'd also like to go to Burgh Island but cannot justify the cost.

I did an out of season Hurtigruten cruise to various Norwegian towns. Zero kids, small boat. Loved it. Also river cruises are a different fish to ocean.

My Dad did a Silk Road package tour to Uzbekistan when he was aged over 70. Might even have been with Saga. No trouble and a very memorable trip.

Any country bordering Russia!

would have loved to take the kids to Moomin world in Finland but won’t trust the Russians!

Finland's great - don't miss out on it.

blackpearwhitelilies · 12/04/2023 14:13

Why can't we go to Scotland??

Hubcapdiamondstarhalo · 12/04/2023 14:20

Rome. I used to fancy the idea of visiting to see the Colosseum, Vatican, Sistine Chapel ( probably wouldn't have screamed, but who knows, eh? ) Now the thought of the crowds and the heat puts me right off.

VaddaABeetch · 12/04/2023 14:26

New Zealand, they don’t like women much there.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 12/04/2023 14:26

Russia

TheVanguardSix · 12/04/2023 14:31

Kyiv
Lviv (such a beautiful city I imagine)
St. Petersburg
Damascus (probably safe but I worry)
Jerusalem

I just wouldn’t go now. But terrible times pass and places regenerate so, in the future I hope to go to all of these places.

RJ57 · 12/04/2023 14:31

@Hubcapdiamondstarhalo I went a few years ago (in the summer) and it was honestly one of the best cities I've ever been to in my life. So much to see and so much history. I didn't notice an issue with crowds (aside from the queue for the Sistine Chapel, so I didn't bother and instead had a glass of wine overlooking the river). Heat side, you can go off season (though I enjoyed the heat) and that will also reduce the crowds.

Honestly, if you've always wanted to see it, then do so. I enjoyed it so much and want to go back one day. The Forum, the churches, the Pantheon, the Colleseum, the great food (and wine). So much history. We had a really big guide book and still walked into churches which were not even in the guide and which were still stunning.

A joke?

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 12/04/2023 14:53

Russia. Particularly Moscow and St Petersburg. Should've done that Baltic cruise 6 years ago. Also Syria, Afghanistan, Iran and Israel

Bookworm333 · 12/04/2023 15:31

The Maldives

I don't get it either.

IsadoraQuagmire · 12/04/2023 16:39

New Zealand and Australia. Luckily I've never wanted to go to Canada.

Russia. Always fancied it.Oh well- first world problem really.

Same here. DH and I were always going to visit St Petersburg, it was on our bucket list and next on our list to visit actually. Shame. Putin has not only isolated Ukraine but also Russia.

Beebumble2 · 12/04/2023 16:55

Went to San Francisco about 9 years ago and had a fancy time. There was a lot of homeless, but we saw little drug use. I guess it’s really changed.
I also wouldn’t go to China now, DH and DS went separately, a few years ago, on cultural visits.
I’m in Scotland now, without my passport! Will I ever get home?
