How much wine?

WashAsDelicates · 04/04/2023 17:42

I'm hosting a dinner for 7 people aged between 16 and 60. One of the adults will contentedly make one glass last the whole evening. At the other extreme is the one who will drink every drink you give them. Both are generous hosts.

How many bottles of wine should I buy?

All the wine.

theswoot · 04/04/2023 17:45

This is a good question and I am mainly interested in others’ responses. If you’re not the sort of person who has wine around at home that you can crack into “in an emergency” (ie if you drink all the party wine) and you also don’t mine having wine left over, I would get a case of 12 and enjoy any leftovers myself if there were any!

Bobshhh · 04/04/2023 17:46

I’d probably buy 4 bottles of fizz, 8 white and 4 red and know that I’d have some left over and be very pleased with my forward planning.

I'd agree to get plenty...8 as a minimum. It won't matter if there's any left over

Number24Bus · 04/04/2023 17:46

IME several of them will bring a bottle with them? So if you buy two bottles there should be plenty. Unless you've told them not to bring wine?

MyBloodyMaryneedsmoreTabasco · 04/04/2023 17:47

Assuming everyone drinks wine, at least 10 bottles. And I would suggest not 10 different ones, I really do not like mixing my drink even if all the same type.

This seems risky 😂

Kitsmummy · 04/04/2023 17:48

TWO BOTTLES???!! That could turn out to be the most joyless event ever!!

MaryJean87 · 04/04/2023 17:49

About 15 bottles. A mix of red, white, rose and prosecco.

Justputitdown · 04/04/2023 17:49

I'd buy 10 and expect to have a couple left over.

SlipSlidinAway · 04/04/2023 17:50

I'd probably allow 6 bottles. However, if you don't know whether they are predominantly red or white wine drinkers, I would cater for them all drinking red or all drinking white - so 6 of each, expecting to have quite a few bottles left over.

WeAreAllLionesses · 04/04/2023 17:51

I bought 24 bottles for 15 people and we drank what was left over the following weeks.

Definitely better to look more generous IMO!

Shouldbesleeping8 · 04/04/2023 17:51

3 fizz, 4 white, 3 red. They'll bring some too.

MissPoldark · 04/04/2023 17:51

Do you drink wine yourself usually?
if so I wouldn’t worry about over buying, but if not a wine drinker it’s a bit trickier.
I’d say at least half a bottle per person.

TheDuchessOfMN · 04/04/2023 17:52

I presume the 16 year old won’t be drinking any, so that’s 6 people?

I would guess that 5 bottles should be about right.

fourhours · 04/04/2023 17:52

I think you definitely need 8 but would get a bit extra and buy 2 fizz, 4 red and 4 white (unless you know more prefer white to red etc).

It's probably the 16 year old who is drinking every drink on offer!

Frenchfancy · 04/04/2023 18:00

I can't believe people really allow 15 bottles of wine for seven people. We a pretty big drinkers but there is no way we would get through that. I would assume a bottle per person.

Most MN answer ever 😂😂😂

I’d get a mixed case.

But you wouldn't have to worry about it. You'd know there would be enough.

Yeah but if you don't know who drinks what, it's best to buy a bit more. Some people drink more. 3 large glasses is a bottle. I'm not a huge drinker but I can easily drink that in an evening. Maybe a bit more. So it's best to have some left over than not have enough.

WashAsDelicates · 04/04/2023 18:07

I'm ever so slightly gobsmacked!

I imagined it would average out at about 3 glasses per person, including the 16yo (yes, he would, but no, it isn't), so 21ish glasses. 4.5 glasses per bottle makes that 4.5 bottles. So I thought I might need about 5 bottles.

But you lot are telling me I need at least twice that?! If you exclude the one-glass guest, you're saying people drink more than 2 bottles at one sitting, over the course of a meal?

As you can see, we're not big wine drinkers!

Lottapianos · 04/04/2023 18:10

'So I thought I might need about 5 bottles.'

That may well be what you end up getting through, but I think people are quite rightly erring on the generous side. You absolutely don't want to run out

I would probably get in 5 white and 5 red, then you're covered if people drink more of one than the other. 3-4 bottles of fizz for aperitif if you want to, but that's absolutely not essential. Have fun!

ExtremelyDetermined · 04/04/2023 18:10

I'd say better to have too much than not enough too, maybe 3 rose, 3 white, 4 red plus two of whichever you think is most likely to be popular.

ExtremelyDetermined · 04/04/2023 18:12

I don't think you actually need 2+ per person but if they all choose either white or red you could be in difficulty. You cam always keep any that are left for another time.
