How much wine?

I'm hosting a dinner for 7 people aged between 16 and 60. One of the adults will contentedly make one glass last the whole evening. At the other extreme is the one who will drink every drink you give them. Both are generous hosts.

How many bottles of wine should I buy?

I don't think 175ml glasses are that unusual, are they? We actually usually use 125ml glasses and bring the 175ml ones out for guests

Where do you actually buy 125ml glasses these days? They all seem to be 250!

I haven't bought any for years, my parents gave us some which I think they bought in the 70s. It does look to be difficult to get them now except for vintage/second hand

6 red, 6 white, 3 fizz, job done and you’ll most likely have leftovers for your wine rack.

Agree

Agree

Yes, this. In our family we have some piss takers so my mum has for a few years now asked directly for wine contributions whilst also making it known she has bought wine as well.

15 bottles: 5 red, 5 white, 5 rose or fizz. You don't want to run out and you might find everybody drinks only red/white etc in which case you should have enough of each to satisfy all your guests. I'd be surprised if it all gets drunk, in which case you'll have yourself a nice little wine collection for the summer!

Lovewinemorethanhusband · 06/04/2023 16:28

I'd say about 8 bottles and then 2 Prosecco, my friends and I often do food and wine and it's normally Prosecco to start with then Wine, we all drink white luckily so we just have that but between 6 of us there's not normally much left !

7 people, 6 bottles. Find out what they like best so red lovers aren't forced to drink white or vice versa. You're not a big wine drinker so won't easily use it up, a 16 year old won't down a whole bottle and you've got one of the 7 who only has a 125ml glass all night so that's 5 drinkers, presumably some are designated drivers? In reality that's 2 drinkers less because you don't normally fit 7 people in one car. So now we have 3 potential big drinkers who can almost have 2 bottles each.

If they drink over a bottle each then that's too much. You're saving their livers! They'll thank you for it 😜

Stewball01 · 08/04/2023 07:20

Yes. People can drink 2 bottles of wine at a sitting. Get the maximum amount and arrange with the shopkeeper to take back unopened bottles.

Phoebo · 08/04/2023 07:22

I'd get a bottle per person and then a few extras. Always better to over cater. And then you'll have wine leftover as well (or not!)

helenatroy · 09/04/2023 10:08

I’d say around 8- 10 bottles. Am Irish and would sooner have “back up” than run out.

WashAsDelicates · 09/04/2023 17:32

So we got through 2 white and 3 red across 6 hours of food and laughter and making music. The rest of the bottles sat on the counter unopened. It was the sort of evening where any of the adults suggested opening another bottle - we're all comfortable enough with each other that we don't feel the need to wait until we're offered.

Most MN answer ever 😂😂😂

I’d get a mixed case.

Snap. A mixed case unless you have a good idea of how many red v white guests. Personally I wouldn't bother with any sparkling unless you know guests want it or a celebration (I say that as a prosecco lover)

HamstersAreMyLife · 09/04/2023 17:59

Well that will teach me to read to the end 😳

ThreeRingCircus · 09/04/2023 18:08

That sounds great OP and I'm glad you all had a nice time! I'd have said 6 bottles of wine for the 7 people with one being a teenager but the problem is often you don't know whether people drink red or white, or will bring a bottle with them or not which is why people tend to over buy to be on the safe side! So although I would have assumed about 6 bottles of wine would be finished I'd have ended up buying 6 red and 6 white just in case everyone wants one particular type! Any left overs just get taken to other parties or donated to the school fête.

Fascinating reading the range of answers though!

doadeer · 09/04/2023 18:15

I feel vindicated that my first reaction was 6 bottles! 😂

Can't believe people said 15!
