How much wine?

I'm hosting a dinner for 7 people aged between 16 and 60. One of the adults will contentedly make one glass last the whole evening. At the other extreme is the one who will drink every drink you give them. Both are generous hosts.

How many bottles of wine should I buy?

IME several of them will bring a bottle with them? So if you buy two bottles there should be plenty. Unless you've told them not to bring wine?

Three households, including us. So even if each brings a bottle, that's only 2 being brought.

It’s 25% off when you buy 6 at Tesco this week. I would do that, personally and then hope that people bring some.

yogaretreat · 04/04/2023 18:19

Gosh I would have said 6 bottles max... Are people saying over 10 bottles of wine?! That's loads surely??

TheSnowyOwl · 04/04/2023 18:20

It should be half a bottle of red and half of white per person plus some fizz to toast. You need at least ten bottles.

BeatriceFranklin · 04/04/2023 18:22

6 red, 6 white, 3 fizz, job done and you’ll most likely have leftovers for your wine rack.

TrianglePlayer · 04/04/2023 18:23

I’m with the others who say get more and then use it slowly over the year / take to other people’s houses when you go out etc. If you only buy, say, two white, two red and two fizz and everyone is keen to drink red it’s barely anything between 6.

PriamFarrl · 04/04/2023 18:24

A bottle per person and one for luck. So you might find it works out better value to get a mixed case. I’d much sooner have too much, it will keep after all, than not enough.

pornyshroudofturin · 04/04/2023 18:24

Is your menu the sort that will sway people to one wine or another- so salmon in cream sauce, or rib of beef etc? If it’s pretty obvious whether most people will want white or red, that makes it a bit easier but if not so obvious you need enough for everyone to pick one or the other- that’s why people are suggesting higher quantities than anticipated

YakobRiceMoorgan · 04/04/2023 18:26

15 bottles for a jolly evening.
Let the wine flow!

Duvetdweller · 04/04/2023 18:26

I’d buy 6 of everything (fizz, rose, red and white). You don’t know what everyone will be drinking.

ActDottie · 04/04/2023 18:26

Prosecco on arrival, (2-3 bottles), then maybe 6 white and 4 red

gingercat02 · 04/04/2023 18:26

If they are people you know well then surely you know if they are a couple of glasses people or a whole bottle (or more).
You would also know red, white, pink, or fizz.
The people recommending loads are guessing so a generous selection

I would go for a bottle each. Plus a couple of extras in case they stay late (my friend's would)

RosesInWater · 04/04/2023 18:26

4 white, 4 red, 3 prosecco. Buy a separate bottle of red and make a bowl of sangria/punch with apples and oranges, cointreau and brandy too. That's a dozen bottles total.

Do not be that host that runs out of drink at a party. Nope, it doesn't matter if there are leftovers, that's great, they will be used another time.

Have a terrific party.

YakobRiceMoorgan · 04/04/2023 18:27

You can keep or gift whatever doesn't get drunk I don't expect 15 will get drunk but it's nice toknow you have it. If you can afford it.

Theelephantinthecastle · 04/04/2023 18:27

I would buy 8 but not expecting to go through more than 6. Basically two extra to have some choice in case more people go for red than white or whatever. I tend to find people bring red but drink white so I would go for more white than red

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/04/2023 18:28

I'd never worry about over buying wine as it keeps (til the next day!!)

2x prosecco for arrival drinks, 3x white and 3x red

Moredarkchocolateplease · 04/04/2023 18:28

I'd buy eight red, four white and four Rose. All the same type of each colour.

Plus two bottles proper champagne or cremant.

NetballHoop · 04/04/2023 18:30

7 red, 7 white and 4 bubbles. With any luck you'll have plenty left over for the next few months.

hallodarknessmyoldfriend · 04/04/2023 18:31

I would get more rather than less and keep any leftover bottles for the next time.

For 7 people I would get 3 white, 3 red and 2 bottles of Prosecco.

Midlander01 · 04/04/2023 18:33

Will you offer other drinks pre dinner (e.g. prosecco, gin and tonic, beer?). I would get a mixed case (12) of red and white.

Is it really an issue to overbuy (unless budget doesn't allow)? Wine doesn't go off or you could get sale or return if that's an issue.

midgemadgemodge · 04/04/2023 18:34

I have never been to a dinner party with "arrival drinks"

I have never been to a dinner party and not taken at least enough alcohol and soft drinks for me

A bottle of something you like and assume everyone else has basic manners

midgemadgemodge · 04/04/2023 18:34

NetballHoop · 04/04/2023 18:30

7 red, 7 white and 4 bubbles. With any luck you'll have plenty left over for the next few months.

Plenty !

Do people regularly drink 2 bottles of wine in a evening ?!

This is fascinating

Littlethingsmeanalot · 04/04/2023 18:38

You can’t do 5, well you can but it’s not great.

id do seven white 5 red. And 3 Prosecco. If it doesn’t get drunk you can sace for another time or return.
