How much cash would you keep in the house?

I was rather surprised that a friend told me today that they keep £1000 in cash in the house 'in case of emergencies'. I don't have any more than about £50 at a time but often have none.

I could get my hands in around £1200 in an emergency on my land.

My parents have adopted the rule from grandparents so it's kind of followed suit

We usually keep around £200 ‘indoors money’ as DH calls it, together with whatever we’ve each got in our respective wallet/purse.

Nothing, although happily the DC usually have some cash!

We have money, but only use cards these days

I have almost £2000 in emergency cash at home

I keep 4 weeks worth of the cleaning ladies cash ( I declare her but pay her net in cash), I leave it in a drawer and she helps herself.
Then I have a massive bowl in the hall with coins, I empty any coins from my pockets when I get home and use it for delivery tips, boulangerie or just dashing to get a bottle of milk - a friends child counted in out a while ago for fun and I was surprised that there was over 200 euros, 130 sterling and a whooping 300 Swiss francs!
Then I probably have 30-50 euros in my purse

£500 in cash hidden around the house, just in case… we call it teddy bear savings 😊

Zipps · 02/04/2023 22:37

About £1500 in the safe

Maybe 20-30 and some coins for school stuff, children have a couple hundred from gifts that needs to be paid into bank.

My friend was telling me how her dad who is in hospital told her to check his room as he’s squirrelled away nearly 20k cash in there! She’s worried about how to pay so much into the bank for him now as he’s been retired for years. Must be lots of elderly people who have done the same

Both dh & I have our own safes 😂 both are screwed to the floor and in different places so no one could walk off with them .
both are reasonably well hidden

I keep a few thousand pounds in cash in my safe my passport, spare credit cards that I don’t use
birth /marriage certificate and some jewelry that i don’t wear very often .

I’ve had a safe for years as I know if I didn’t I would easily lose my passport

I generally have around £100 in cash as well at all times in my purse

We also have a bowl of loose change for tips probably about £50 . And I keep around £20 in loose change in my car
