How much cash would you keep in the house?

I was rather surprised that a friend told me today that they keep £1000 in cash in the house 'in case of emergencies'. I don't have any more than about £50 at a time but often have none.

I usually keep about 100,000 under the mattress.

Lcb123 · 02/04/2023 17:23

ive never had cash in the house! Maybe some old euros and dollars somewhere

CatOnTheChair · 02/04/2023 17:30

Here n the uk? Whatever is in the kids piggybanks, and maybe £30 in my purse.
When we lived abroad, we had a safe with enough cash to get us petrol to the next country and a flight to Europe.
It regularly got raided as the ATMs used to go down for 3-4 days a couple of times a year.

Wow, must be nice to find! Do you know why he was keeping it like that?

MumOf2workOptions · 02/04/2023 17:36

I keep £500 stashed not even my partner knows I've got it, just for emergencies really.

Don't usually have any - why would I need cash?

Card gets stolen
Bank decides to block card for unknown reason and you can’t get through to them for four days despite hanging on for hours (Nat West)
Have money in a building society account but as they have shut all of the local branches the nearest one is two bus rides away.

MashedUpPotatoes · 02/04/2023 17:38

I was about to answer none but I have about £300 in the ‘special’ £2 coins and about £100 in the 50p pieces

Yep, my boyfriend doesn't know about my stash. It would be frittered on take aways!

DrunkTrampolining · 02/04/2023 17:42

Maybe £50. I can’t remember the last time we used cash though. Even the window cleaner has a bank transfer now, he was probably the last use of regular cash for us.

OhSmitty · 02/04/2023 17:44

I like to keep a £40 float in my wallet of £20, £10, £5 and 5x £1. This covers most situations, we have a cashpoint 5mins walk away and 2 shops that do cashback if needed but I don't really spend cash and it stays in my wallet for months.

Surely that makes the mattress lumpy ? Bit like the princess and the pea.

flutterbyebaby · 02/04/2023 17:47

£500 in my emergency drawer and a big whisky bottle full of pound coins and the odd note.

AuntieMarys · 02/04/2023 17:51

I haven't had cash on me for about 3 years

Coyoacan · 02/04/2023 17:55

But why are people advertising on the internet how much money they have in the house? I know it is anonymous, but are you totally certain there is no way anyone could trace you?

stealthninjamum · 02/04/2023 17:57

About £200 to £300. I always like to have enough that I can get a taxi to our local an and e and back if needed or pay to get a taxi back from London if I miss the train. I have never done either of those things but feel reassured anyway.

Im99912 · 02/04/2023 17:58

I keep a couple thousand in the safe always have

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 02/04/2023 17:59

None.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 02/04/2023 18:00

None

Clymene · 02/04/2023 18:01

None. I rarely use it and it's losing value every single day it sits in your house rather than in your bank account

What sort of criminal mastermind would find it worthwhile going after Claire from Luton’s £50 float?

I’m sure there are more lucrative scams, even if everyone was telling the truth.

BooksAndHooks · 02/04/2023 18:05

£20 for the window cleaner that’s it. If we need cash on the odd occasion we take the money out then. Usually now it’s only the barber and window cleaner we need cash for.

avocadotofu · 02/04/2023 18:05

I don't have any usually.

Jojoanna · 02/04/2023 18:22

I don't have any cash in the house ! Maybe I should??

Sugarplumfairy65 · 02/04/2023 18:26

£500 in the safe and £20 in my phone case for emergencies.
