How much cash would you keep in the house?

Bouledeneige · 02/04/2023 16:36

I was rather surprised that a friend told me today that they keep £1000 in cash in the house 'in case of emergencies'. I don't have any more than about £50 at a time but often have none.

I would encourage people to keep as much ready cash as possible in the house, and to put it with any valuables in an easy accessible place (like the kitchen work top) in case of fire.

HurdyGurdy19 · 02/04/2023 20:07

Since the pandemic, I rarely have cash around me. I think I've got about £9 in odd coins, but definitely not a large amount.

I do have an instant access savings account with about £1,000 in it, which I could withdraw if I had some kind of emergency.

TribeD · 02/04/2023 20:10

I usually withdraw £100 on payday and whittle through some of it throughout the month. Whatever is left gets put into a wallet for a rainy day.

At the end of each week I tip my silver and copper change into an old fishbowl - that gets cashed in for Christmas drinks. £2 & £1 coins go in my terramundi or into DD's money box.

Between us, DH and I could probably find £200 in cash in the house.

GobbieMaggie · 02/04/2023 20:13

£30, just to cover odds and sods.

JimmyDurham · 02/04/2023 20:21

£7.50 in small change in a piggy bank. Parking money for thse carparks that still require cash.

Bouledeneige · 02/04/2023 20:24

Interesting I did think about whether it was wise to talk about this on the internet but I've not yet given out my friend's address yet or alerted people to the fact she's currently taking a holiday in a car queue at Dover last I heard.

I keep a decent sum of cash in the house. The window cleaner only takes cash as does my local chip shop and I prefer to pay cash in pubs.
My grandkids also prefer cash for their pocket money 😅

LadyOfTheCanyon · 02/04/2023 20:28

Currently more than normal as I've sold quite a few bits and pieces recently - we normally have up to £1K in the house.

Surely this requires a follow up thread.
Do you have a safe in your house, if so why and is it actually secured to anything or just sitting in the bottom of a wardrobe.
In my line of work the only people who have safes are usually the drug dealers

Eek. I better start keeping a closer eye on my Grandma, then 🤣

Marcinon · 02/04/2023 20:33

Pre covid up to £30 -£50 between us. Now, a few bags of coins that we bagged for filling the charity envelopes with if they reappear.

gogohmm · 02/04/2023 20:37

Have about £20 in my bag and around €100 leftover from last holiday. Why keep money in the house? If the banking system went down the shops wouldn't be able to open as their tolls would stop working

Hedjwitch · 02/04/2023 20:42

Cyber attacks will target the banks first. You should keep some cash in a fireproof box in the house, or somewhere safe and accessible

champagneplanet · 02/04/2023 20:44

No more than £100 usually between DH and I, he carries very little £20 max. DCs have some pocket money and I've got about £200 that needs to go into the coin machine from pre lockdown.

🤣 My Father also had one as do I .

Snugglemonkey · 02/04/2023 20:46

We have £100 in case of emergency, but those tend to be no money to pay for our local Chinese (only does cash deliveries) so it can go lower before we top up.

We have every £50 note our DC receive in a box. They do quite regularly receive them for Xmas/
Birthdays from grandparents/godparents etc so I would say there is probably at least £500 there. I can't remember why we started that, but we never spend the £50's and DS got a £100 once. Thinking about that, there must be about £1000.

We never spend £2 coins. We have 3 piggy banks full. Ds accidentally smashed a fourth recently and there was nearly £300, so that is in a Tupperware box in a drawer and there is probably similar in the others. We give those to my son to put in. We are planning on turning those into a holiday, so he can see that saving small amounts makes big things happen.

We also have a jar for small change.

tillytoodles1 · 02/04/2023 20:48

I have a change jar with about £10 in it, but I use my card when shopping so never have any cash on me unless I get it out of the bank

I have got a tin of Irish pre decimal coins. I love that they have animals on them. Probably not going to be much use in an emergency.

People are selling/buying those on eBay. I was looking a while ago for two 6 pence pieces the year of dp's birth to make him cufflinks for his birthday and was surprised at the random coins available and at how expensive the two I was after were. I did need the last year produced though, so maybe that made them worth more, I don't know. Worth a check though!

Fanfaregreen · 02/04/2023 21:00

Generally about a 4 figure sum, mainly as it's the simplest way to shift money from a certain account to another and I don't get around to paying it in to the second account for months, so it builds up. But it's just a convenience thing, rather than keeping it for emergencies. Not too concerned about it getting stolen as we've just never experienced or heard of any burglaries here.

Badbudgeter · 02/04/2023 21:04

I always keep an emergency £20 in the glovebox Not much cash sround the house unless I raid the dcs piggy banks. I’ve got about sixty quid cash in a coat pocket as I took out £100 2 months ago and hardly ever use cash anymore.

Wallywobbles · 02/04/2023 21:06

Depends what we've sold.

PacificallyRequested · 02/04/2023 21:07

I think I've got twenty quid in my purse, and a couple of fivers in a drawer somewhere. Are five pound notes even still in use?! I don't think I've had one for years but rarely use cash since the pandemic. I can't even remember the last time I got any out a cash machine. The note in my purse my mum gave me months ago to pay for something!

My281NewestName · 02/04/2023 16:45

We have an envelope with £100 cash in it which is labelled as for emergencies only. It started with DC were teens so they knew if they were stuck anywhere they could get a taxi home and there would be money to pay for it.

Am going to adopt this excellent idea

DiscoBeat · 02/04/2023 21:29

I tend not to spend £1 coins much so there are about £200 worth of those, and a 'petty cash' tin of about £300 in case I suddenly need it but that's it. I certainly don't squirrel a stack of cash under the mattress (we do have different accounts though, not all in one account).

mondaytosunday · 02/04/2023 21:41

I've got £60.

feelingthankful · 02/04/2023 21:48

I've got about £100 worth of Thai baht which Ive mean meaning to get changed back into £ for about 5 years.

I also have an out of date £10, but don't know if I've missed the boat for getting that changed
