Massive wallets. Am I missing out?

My sister is a Massive Wallet user. She bought me one for my birthday so I can join the crew.

I usually use something like this. It has room for 9 cards, notes and a zip bit for coins.

The one she’s bought me is this size.

So, will my life be changed if I use it? So far all I can see is that it won’t fit in my pocket.

What’s the benefit of a bigger one?

I used to have a small purse with all my cards in it, and then ended up holding up everyone in the shop as I flicked through trying to find the right card. It was embarrassing and now I have a proper wallet / purse with all the cards nicely organised.

Yes that's the major advantage of a larger purse. I'm considering getting one, because my old small one is falling to bits, and it's too thick to fit in my pockets so I need an handbag anyway.

It’s not 10cm. It’s 20x11.

I thought it looked bigger but it states these measurements….

Are these not a thing of the past, who carries money or cards these days?

I haven't used one for years, everything is on my phone. I also don't use a handbag so wouldn't have anywhere to put it.

mondaytosunday · 01/04/2023 19:54

I used to just carry a wallet, which was huge and had everything in it. Now it's just my phone with a case that has room for cards and paper cash (haven't carried coins since the pandemic). In fact can't even remember where my wallet is 😬! I don't carry a big unless I need to take my insulin and monitor.

No one’s saying you should carry cash around if it’s of no use to you, but I’m not sure why you’re amazed that many people still like to use cash.

I’m not amazed people might like to use cash, more I’m surprised there’s enough shops still accepting cash to make it worth while carrying it about. I’d happily use cash if I could use it. The only shop I regularly use which accepts it would be the supermarket which ironically is the one shop I’ve never used cash in. I’m not risking taking £150 plus out in cash. And even if I did I’m then stuck with change I can’t use. 🤷‍♀️

People who don't want to totally rely on a device that breaks if you drop it, could run out of battery or get lost or stolen.

How would you pay for things or get in touch with anyone, without your phone?

Spudlet · 01/04/2023 20:33

I stopped carrying anything other than my phone for a while, but then my bank changed their debit card provider from visa to mastercard and Apple Pay stopped working for quite some time. It was quite embarrassing (luckily it was the local shop so I could nip back home for a card) and since then, I no longer rely on it. It has started working again, I had to test it when I left my purse at home and really needed to buy some stuff for work, but it’s a backup now for me as opposed to a main payment method.

DisforDarkChocolate · 01/04/2023 20:38

I was given a large Radley one a few years ago. It's lovely but too big for some of my bags. I have a smaller one I use the occasionally but most of the time I just use my phone.

I don’t know a single shop that doesn’t accept cash. The only place I’ve been recently that didn’t accept cash was an O2 academy.

CharlotteDoyle · 01/04/2023 20:47

Do people really still bother with wallets? Surely all you need most days is your phone

Really? I don’t know of any shops that don’t take cash where I live! What about the elderly who aren’t good with tech? How the hell do they manage where you live?

YOU might. Is it that hard to grasp that some do things different?

MrsMiddleMother · 01/04/2023 21:07

When I was younger I loved huge purses like the one your sister bought, now I find them far too big, bulky and heavy so use a slim card wallet that holds 6 cards with small zip section for some change.

Undertheoldlindentree · 01/04/2023 21:07

Sorry OP, both of those phones are too big for me. After decades of trial and error, I've discovered the dream system. A leather cardholder with zipped section for coins....and this is the vital part.....it has a keyring built in for my door key and car key! Now I can never accidentally go out without my purse or lock myself out. The keys zip into a tiny section on the front and the whole thing can fit into the smallest pocket.

Wallets an Americanism. In the UK they are purses

I don’t care if it’s called a wallet or a purse, but does anyone have any insight into the benefits of a bigger sized one?

Me!

I can keep all my cards in it. I have one set of my cards I use all the time, credit, debit, supermarket loyalty card, and one set for membership cards, other bank accounts. Licence, E1-11 etc. I am never without a useful card.

I have room for cash, receipts, vouchers, tokens. I get out a lot of cash every two weeks to pay service providers. Coins too, always useful when you have a child and want to go to a school event.

I have room for other things, a house key, pain killers, earrings or other miscellany I don't want to lose whilst out.

Not only do I have room to carry all the things I might need, I can also find the thing in my (also large) bag. And as I have a Ted Baker matinee purse it is bright and shiny which helps even further.

It's a thought saving thing for me. I will go out for the evening with just a card and my phone but on a daily basis I have my big mummy purse. It's shiny and pretty and a bit sparkly and it makes me happy.

I also get mine cheap from eBay.

The village shop doesn’t take cash, the chip shop doesn’t take cash and my regular coffee shop doesn’t take cash. They’re pretty much the only shops I go in apart from supermarkets. They literally will not let you pay in cash. My Dd works in one of them and initially she said she had people shouting at her but now everyone knows and is ok with it.

Isn't just carrying a phone the epitome of putting all your eggs in one basket?

If your phone stops working for any reason from lack of reception to lack of charge to being dropped down the toilet you're 100% screwed ...

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/04/2023 09:32

I always carry my debit card too as emergency back up.

That's why I also carry my debit card. I don't have Samsung Pay activated on my phone.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 02/04/2023 09:36

I love vendula bags and purses (which they call wallets) and prefer a large one. But I like large bags too.

When I use a smaller bag for the evening then i swap to a smaller purse.

I’ve got a lovely mulberry wallet but I haven’t used it for a couple of years. I never carry cash and I use my phone to pay instead of a card, so a wallet is completed redundant to me.
