Massive wallets. Am I missing out?

My sister is a Massive Wallet user. She bought me one for my birthday so I can join the crew.

I usually use something like this. It has room for 9 cards, notes and a zip bit for coins.

The one she’s bought me is this size.

So, will my life be changed if I use it? So far all I can see is that it won’t fit in my pocket.

What’s the benefit of a bigger one?

I have a humongous purse / wallet /
whatever which has a mini card wallet that fits inside an outer pocket of the main purse. So I can have the whole shebang with all the space for notes, receipts, change etc when I’m carrying a bag, or just take the card part if I want something that fits in a coat pocket. Works really well for me.

It's a purse. Men have wallets. I have a huge purse and no longer use it because all my store cards and credit/debit cards on on my phone. I think purses will be redundant soon.

Leftbutcameback · 01/04/2023 15:34

I used to have a small purse with all my cards in it, and then ended up holding up everyone in the shop as I flicked through trying to find the right card. It was embarrassing and now I have a proper wallet / purse with all the cards nicely organised.

Wowwellokthen · 01/04/2023 15:40

No purse/wallet here, all on phone.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 01/04/2023 15:44

Another one who just carries a phone now

Ifailed · 01/04/2023 15:53

A wallet is for cards/notes, a purse holds both plus coins.

MyriadOfTravels · 01/04/2023 15:53

On paper, I just have my phone. In reality, I have so many store cards (tesco, nectar, boosts, waterstone etc etc) that I still have my wallet with at all time.

im also getting more and more uncomfortable about not having cash and using it….

liveforsummer · 01/04/2023 16:00

Who actually cares what it's called - it's not even relevant to the question 😅. This thread is so mumsnet 🤣. Op I couldn't be bothered carrying that around - in fact I don't carry anything to wee days. Just my phone in my pocket which does it all!

Yfory · 01/04/2023 16:05

To confuse the "is this a wallet or a purse?" issue even further, in the US I think what they would call a purse we call a handbag! What do they call what we would call a purse/wallet?

To me the lovely jade one in the op is a wallet. The one given as a gift I wouldnt ever use, to wide for my taste. A purse for me is a small zip up pocket thats just used for coins.

feelingrubbish2023 · 01/04/2023 16:11

A few years ago I'd have used one of those big wallets, I used to carr6 around all my store cards and debit cards etc and cash.

These days I usually just take my phone which has stocard app for the store cards and Apple Pay. I have a small coin purse I keep in the car with about ten pounds in change for weird parking places.

ArcticSkewer · 01/04/2023 16:18

Gave up on my handbag years ago, so out went the purse as well.

I can't think of any reason why you'd need something so massive, no. I suppose if it's heavy you might notice if you drop it.

It's a purse though

merryhouse · 01/04/2023 16:19

@Yfory according to a sitcom I watched YEARS ago, "a change-purse"

(It was called Land of Hope and Gloria, about an aristocratic Englishman who'd employed an American woman as a Business Manager. With Hilarious Results, obviously. According to Wikipedia, it was universally panned. I'm pretty sure it wasn't as bad as Hyperdrive.)

BlueJellycat · 01/04/2023 16:22

I used to have a massive purse pre covid. But now we are more cashless and I have my phone wallet I wonder why I even need a bag some days. I have a little card size purse now

evangron · 01/04/2023 16:23

My mother in law calls her purse a wallet

Freaks me out 😂 it's a purse

But to add: I don't even carry a handbag. I've my bank card in my phone cover

HouseofHolbein · 01/04/2023 16:29

I don't use anything I pay for everything with my watch and keep my store cards on an app. Used to have a lovely purse now i barely use a handbag 🤣🤣

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/04/2023 16:34

Big zip round wallets hark back to the days of cheque books. I used to use one. Now everything is on my phone, but I take a little power bank if I'm going out for long.

WonderingWanda · 01/04/2023 16:38

I do have a purse but it sits in a handbag that I rarely use. I mostly just carry my phone with an emergency bank card in the back in the back. I like the idea of a nice bag and purse combo but it's often not practical. When I take the kids out I usually need a backpack. When I go to work I need a laptop bag. Often I'm just rushing about and the only things I can remember ar phone and keys.

userxx · 01/04/2023 16:41

I always used to have a big purse but as all my cards are on my phone I've got a coin purse.

Klunt · 01/04/2023 16:48

I just put my phone in my pocket. Any remember the last time I took my purse out! It’s a big clip top one though that I’ve had for years.

Frankley · 01/04/2023 16:52

I had a large purse/wallet. I kept all my cards, also my driving licence and other stuff in it. One day when l was in town a pick pocket got it. I realised all my life was in there. I had to renew lots of things eg library card etc.
I now keep everything separate and only carry essentials around.
(A very nice lady helped me when she saw l was upset, I've never forgotten her and wasn't able to thank her properly)

Dintananadinta · 01/04/2023 16:53

I hate big purses/wallets. They take up too much space and are bulky.

tuvamoodyson · 01/04/2023 16:54

Purse in Scotland, here, men use wallets. That aside, my friend bought me an Aspinal purse for a milestone birthday and I love mine!

Custardbanana · 01/04/2023 16:56

I don't carry a purse/wallet at all. Pay everything with my phone. Never carry a handbag, it's just shit to carry around.

anon2022anon · 01/04/2023 17:14

I enjoy a big purse!
But I have about a million different cards (various bank cards, credit card, store loyalty cards, gift cards, charity shop gift aid cards). And I still like to carry some cash, as I live in a market town so some traders do only accept cash. So my big one is always full!
An added perk is it's a lot easier to find in your handbag.
