After the Guinea pig thread, on which which I enthusiastically posted piggy pictures, turned out to be a troll, I thought that there should be a genuine appreciation thread for these cute, demanding, potato shaped poop machines!
These are a selection of mine.
(Also, wtf would you start a troll thread about guinea pigs?!)

Oh I LOVE Guinea Pigs, they are so cute and gentle. I don't have any now but used to.

Cracklingfire1 · 03/04/2023 17:30

@halfsiesonapotnoodle how often do you change the blanket and how do you wash it? We always use sawdust and straw but wondering if using a cover might be better whilst indoors...

Cracklingfire1 · 03/04/2023 17:34

@MissShapesMissStakes don't the fleeces smell of urine if you only wash fortnightly.

How are you all getting such good pics of your pigs? Mine make sure to pull the derpiest faces when I try.

The Rapunzel pig is no longer with us 😥But look at his magnificent hairdo!
My other two boys can’t match his style but they’re just as cute and cuddly.😁

As you can see one is particularly cuddly, (his least flattering pose) and loves to use my boob as his pillow!

MissShapesMissStakes · 03/04/2023 19:37

@Cracklingfire1 they don't seem to!

I am big on my house not smelling like animals (we also have two dogs and GALS). Towards the end of the fortnight they maybe do a little but then the hay smell gets me more than the wee smell.
I'm allergic to the hay mixes and can only cope with Timothy hay.

We also have cardboard boxes full of hay for them to burrow and I think they smell more than the fleeces. They seem to wee more in there than on the fleece.

We get the liners that are fleece with absorbent liners and moisture resistant backing and they work really well.

I think if we didn't have the three cages that we currently have, I'd change more often maybe. Then I could rotate liners. But we took on a boy that we didn't really have space for so ended up with only one per cage.

MissShapesMissStakes · 03/04/2023 19:40

@PigFan that's some serious hair! How did you keep them clean?!

We have two long haired and if I don't give them regular hair trims they get clogged up with poo/hay balls.

PigFan · 03/04/2023 20:07

We would give him a regular bum wash and trim the hair round his butthole short.Grin

TruthsAndALie · 03/04/2023 20:42

I have silkies so quite long haired piggies. As others, I do haircuts 😂 especially round the bum but also all over when the weather gets warm to keep them cool. Pretty good at pig layers if I do say so 😂

I shampoo them every few months; they go in a bowl in the sink and get submerged up to their tummies so bums get a good clean. I shampoo their hair but don’t get ears or heads wet. Towel dry and then put out a hot water water for them to sit on. Only do it when the weather is nice/it’s warm inside. They’re used to it and don’t mind, one splays their legs out as he likes it! Water just hand temperature like a baby.

Things we do for the piggies ❤️

I should not have opened this thread. I fell in love with a skinny pig yesterday. He just had hair on his head and I am sure he wanted me to take him and his mate home.

My husband said no, cause he is all sensible and stuff! I'm a bit heart broken.

Mudandpuddle · 03/04/2023 20:46

Really interested in getting some piggies. Hubbie worried they smell? Do they/the hay smell?

Doremisofarsogood · 03/04/2023 20:50

We've had piggies for a couple of years now, we keep them inside in a huge run and put them out in a run in the warm weather. They're on a mix of fleece and hay, it only gets stinky if you don't change them often enough (once a week full fleece change and hay full change 2/3 times a week and topped up daily. They're such comical little things, they entertain us so much. They're a lot of work though with the changing, nail clipping etc, but totally worth it.

As others have said if you get fleeces you can sweep daily and then I change every 4-5 days. Any longer and it smells but I wouldn’t anyway as I want it nice for them. They always popcorn when it’s all nice and clean. I don’t mind the smell of hay, not that it smells much. It’s not a ‘dirty’ smell, quite like it.

PensionPuzzle · 03/04/2023 21:33

Thanks @gingeristhenewblack43 I can see that working, I thought the fleeces were just fleece with no other redeeming design features 🤣 will definitely have to look into those.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 05/04/2023 10:14

Hi, I change the main fleece about every 6 days and wash it in a large dog bed laundry bag. They have a large box as you can see with woodshavings and the hay racks and they do loads of wees in there. They also have little soft beds and wee pads here and there which I wash as needed. I'd never use straw, though, as its uncomfortable and non absorbent! Fleeces are great and work well for us!

@halfsiesonapotnoodle CUTE!!!!

@WheekDay how do you get them to sit behind their names?! Food bribes?!

Food bribes and pure luck 🤣

DP has never managed to get a photo of them like that so I tell him they obviously love me more!

gingeristhenewblack43 · 06/04/2023 10:37

Laughing away at my DD's 2 piggies this morn. I've only really started to notice this week as the weather has been so nice and I've been able to do multiple loads of washing and hang them outside to dry. I've noticed that whenever the washer goes into spin mode that the pigs start wheeking. They must have learned that when the washer is spinning I go into the kitchen to unload the washing machine and that is where the veggies live! 😂

BonnieMummy · 09/04/2023 23:04

My piggies got a cage upgrade and a newly decorated room last week 🤩

GUINEA PIGS!

I’ve had guinea pigs for over a decade now. Here are my current two. Nutmeg is the ginger/white one and Clover is the floofy black/dark brown one.
