Death sentences

usernamechanged1 · 30/03/2023 20:14

Saw on another thread a couple of “he should hang” type comments in respect to a man who has been convicted of murder. The victim was 9 (Olivia Pratt-Korbel).

I expect it’ll be a resounding no, but does anyone genuinely feel that there should be a death option for certain crimes?

Or are these throwaway comments people tend to make in response to particularly shocking/heinous crimes?

I'd support it. And I'd flip the switch on child molesters and killers myself and sleep soundly after.

So essentially you feel capable of killing people without remorse if you knew there was no chance of it impacting you legally? Interesting take

DueyCheatemAndHow · 30/03/2023 20:40

I don't believe in the death penalty. But I do believe that sentences are too light.

tiredoutma · 30/03/2023 20:41

I think a whole jail tariff without parole for the most depraved killers would be the most fitting punishment, with a careful look of the access to comforts/phones/drugs .

I do not see a place for the death penalty in our progressive and modern society. I do understand how the family of a victim wouid want it though

However you feel about the death penalty, most people aren't going to give a fuck about a child molester/killer dying.

Not really an interesting take, most people are morally opposed to killing but there are also times when you might not be. Even just hypothetically. Child killers and molestors.

Pointeless · 30/03/2023 20:42

No of course I wouldn't actually want to bring back the death penalty, for all sorts of civilised and practical reasons. But as a pp said, I'd have no botheration around certain individuals spontaneously turning up their toes.

Easterfunbun · 30/03/2023 20:44

Not really no. I do think we need to massively extend certain sentences though. Some of the sentencing is completely piss poor and out of date.

avocadotofu · 30/03/2023 20:44

I will never support the death penalty. It's utterly abhorrent to me.

Greenshake · 30/03/2023 20:45

The death penalty has nothing to do with justice and everything to do with vengeance.

hattie43 · 30/03/2023 20:45

Let the family of the victim / s decide .
I'd happily support the death penalty for serial killers and emergency services / child killers . DNA is not likely to lead to miscarriage of justice , particularly in multiple murder sites .

Agree with this. I don’t think the poster was keen to flip the switch based on knowing there were no legal consequences. More likely that they have a strong disgust and hatred towards anyone who commits a crime of that nature.

I’d imagine nobody in their right mind would care if a child killer/molester was no more.

I don’t support it, but you never know how you will feel if someone commits an abhorrent crime against a loved one.

I don’t think it is a deterrent, just look at the US, and I would worry that the imposition of the death sentence would be prejudicial. In the US, black men are more likely to be sentenced to death than a white man, especially when the victim is white and the offender black. I also feel it is more likely that a black person would be convicted than a white person so wouldnt feel sure if their guilt.

However, there are some truly evil people out there and I also feel conflicted as although I wouldnt support the death penalty do people like Ian Brady deserve to live in relative comfort (I know he is no longer alive, just an example)

slowquickstep · 30/03/2023 20:46

Yes i would like to see many hang for their crimes but to be honest the threat of the death penalty doesn't stop crime.

QueenSmartypants · 30/03/2023 20:47

No, absolutely not.

Granted, my reaction to hearing about child abusers is different but there are reasons why the law isn't ruled by my emotional responses and i'll never condone the death penalty.

gogohmm · 30/03/2023 20:48

No because miscarriages of justice occur

userxx · 30/03/2023 20:48

I've never been for the death penalty, it just feels wrong to me, today I read an article on the Manchester evening news about two drug addicts who broke into a 90 odd year old woman's house and stole money and jewellery, they tied her to a chair and left her there. Surely nobody would miss those two fuckers, death.

usernamechanged1 · 30/03/2023 20:48

There are virtually no deterrents to crime. The death penalty wouldn’t be one either.

But I can absolutely see why people would want to see someone swing because of certain crimes. If someone took the life of someone I love, I think I’d want them dead.

There's as difference between not caring if a child molester dies and actively volunteering to kill them and stating you wouldn't have any issues afterwards

Don't get me wrong if I had a child who had been molested and I had a chance to kill them I would probably be tempted. I wouldn't do it but I would feel sympathy for those who took the option

But just randomly volunteering to kill and feel nothing for it, that's not quite the same thing

Blanketpolicy · 30/03/2023 20:49

There are some people I wish would be put to death, mostly the ones who have commented horrific crimes to women or children, and one in particular who impacted my and some other families.

But those thoughts are overruled by the thought that no one should have a job where they have to go into work and kill people for a living. That is just as horrific. So I am satisfied if they are instead locked up, preferably for life, in a segregated cell that they are stuck in 23hrs a day.

gogohmm · 30/03/2023 20:49

I would suotge use of lethal force used though

I thought the same when I read about that brute in Wales who found the old woman asleep in his bed (confused and having entered the wrong house) and stamped her to death.

if it’s proven beyond doubt that this guy is guilty of killing that poor girl, I’d have no particular problem flicking the switch myself.

But in reality no, I don’t support bringing the death penalty back in modern society.

Arthur Pierpoint enjoyed his job

Yes. Give me a gun or a knife and I would kill the man who killed my brother without hesitation.
Then I would have the best nights sleep I’ve had in a long time.

hattie43 · 30/03/2023 20:52

Sorry Albert

cushioncovers · 30/03/2023 20:53

If someone seriously harmed my children I'd happily shoot them dead.
