Death sentences

usernamechanged1 · 30/03/2023 20:14

Saw on another thread a couple of “he should hang” type comments in respect to a man who has been convicted of murder. The victim was 9 (Olivia Pratt-Korbel).

I expect it’ll be a resounding no, but does anyone genuinely feel that there should be a death option for certain crimes?

Or are these throwaway comments people tend to make in response to particularly shocking/heinous crimes?

They're about as valid as me suggesting we turn them into poppets and sell them at fun fairs.

I've worked with offenders for a few years now , I was actually pro death penalty and kind of fell into the job. I'm definitely anti death penalty now, state sanctioned murder is not justice it's revenge. I believe that a minority of people can never be truly rehabilitated and must remain in prison to keep the public wafe.

Then you have the whole squad as convicts, keep tabs on their convoys, ect, trained and selected in prison before going to war, to minimise the very high risk ones.

Do you realise the kinds of people you have in prison? Sadistic people with antisocial personality disorder whose favourite victims are women and children. Prisoners are more likely to munity and wouldn't make good combatants as more likely to be low in morale.

I've met a couple of murderers who were post-army. Plus a shit load of domestic abusers. Not exactly a cure, is it?

I didn't expect it to be a full cure, but it would certainly reduce the prison population numbers quite a bit, depending on the wars

Exactly, although I have a feeling the real suggestion was 'dump them in another country until they die' aka maintain/provoke/manufacture wars to kill our criminals, because that seems sensible and fair on other countries🙄

I mean wheres the incentive to end a war if its handily keeping our prison population down and foreign people are killing our criminals because we dont have the stomach to do it ourselves. Its having the death penalty but being too cowardly to be brazen about it

Hopefully the best candidates would be processed at the various prison facilities then trained up, rather than a free for all

If no countries go to war then we don't need to deploy our troops , peace by default in theory

I'm a Christian and my faith teaches that the death penalty is wrong because it denies the person the chance to repent.

Same.

And the 10% of prisoner numbers being made up of veterans?

In fact not having a military and not fighting in wars might actually reduce the prison population

And yet the same faith advocates death for various other reasons

Yes but if we decide to reduce our prison population by sending our criminals to war then whats the incentive to not be at war?

Shit morale again which isn't what you want your armed forces to have. Look at Putin he's not taken Ukraine because his troops are rubbish and most are conscripted who don't really believe in the cause. Much of winning a war is mentality.

dropthevipers · 01/04/2023 00:38

Have always been ambivalent about the death penalty. I do think some crimes are so awful the criminal should never see daylight again-for such people the prospect of living an utterly pointless existence with no prospect of release is punishment enough.

Is this another 'essay question'?

Where do you get your 10% figure from?

No country lives in a vacuum and we need military. Without them the civilian population would be very much reduced.

Costa Rica.

Is that it? I’m sure there are a couple of Pacific Islands we could add aren’t there?

Essay question, what if the prison population was drafted into the military, and sent into combat zones would that reduced the crime rates knowing they would be going to war

I'm laughing so hard at this!!!!

Come onto the wings and look at your 'army'....it's a no from us!

Not sure what the women's prisons look like though. Could use them I suppose

Essay questions: does saying essay question at the start make statements that need critical thinking applied appear intellectual, or just poncy and unnecessary?

Asking for a friend...

It's just a chat forum isn't it!!

Is it just one poster asking for essay answers? Not seen it before

I'd support it. And I'd flip the switch on child molesters and killers myself and sleep soundly after.

Same here. People like that cannot repent.

BordoisAgain · 01/04/2023 07:27

Essay question. What if the prison population was made to compete in a set of "games" where the losers would be killed eliminated.

We could even televise each event which would a) generate advertising or betting income b) provide entertainment in these hard times c) deter potential criminals.

Research done by a charity which is provides stats on prison intake and the veterans society

Ive done a lot of work with ex military personnel and I respect what they do, but the world would be a far better place if a lot less/no countries had a miliary organisation, or in the UK if we at the very least gave a shit about the health, wellbeing and future of those leaving the military

RosaGallica · 01/04/2023 07:51

When you hear of child rapists and serial murderers I do wonder about the desperate need to keep some people alive tbh. Is the need to prove that we are better than them really conducive to good law and order? In the past societies had the options of exile but that is not open in our crowded world.
