Does anyone use soap instead of shower gel?

I've seen it recommended loads on here but I have a question...

I tried using just a soap bar and I feel loads cleaner, squeaky clean and fresher for longer

However, it really does seem to dry out the skin? I don't know how to describe it, but basically it's fine when cleaning with it but when you rinse it under water, the skin has this tight feeling?

I don't mean dry skin when dry if that makes sense.

What soaps do people use that don't have this as any soap I've ever tried does this?

I use it yes. Can't be bothered with shower gel. Never use it on my face. Live in a hard water area, not hood for my skin. When I visit a friend in a soft water area I notice the difference.

I use dove, like the scent and it feels like it's moisturising.

zurala · 29/03/2023 19:44

I try to use posher soaps with added oils, and I moisturise my body after a shower anyway.

tinytemper66 · 29/03/2023 19:45

Yes. Simple soap. Nothing else.

LadyKenya · 29/03/2023 19:45

Use a body cream, or oil after you shower. That will stop the dry skin feeling.

Timeforachangeisitnot · 29/03/2023 19:46

I do sometimes, but have dry skin so use an emulsion ( QV ) for most showers. Shower gel is you harsh for me, and I find most ends up down the drain.

Kissedbyfire1 · 29/03/2023 19:46

Same here. Beautiful scented properly milled soap and moisturise after shower. Shower gel traps bacteria, soap gets you properly clean. Dove isn’t soap.

I use bar soap for armpits, SebaMed shower wash for the rest of me

FayCarew · 29/03/2023 19:47

I use soap normally, and don't find it drying.

BanditsGravyStain · 29/03/2023 19:48

Dove isn’t soap.

But I know what you mean. I think your skin gets used to it. Liquid shower gel is slippery and leaves your skin feeling like that, I absolutely hated how my skin felt when I switched to soap but it’s fine now.

Cookerhood · 29/03/2023 19:48

Dove isn't soap, it's more like solid shower gel I think.
I use nice soaps (often from TK Maxx) & moisturise. Much better for cleaning stinky armpits! Cheaper too, even with posh soap.

Penelope1703 · 29/03/2023 19:49

Yes I was so guilty for all the plastics in shower gel bottles, so switches to the lovely soaps that they sell in TK Maxx and it's fine. I just moisturise afterwards.

Epicstorm · 29/03/2023 19:50

I would also recommend Dove. Much less drying than soap.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 29/03/2023 19:50

Yes. I grew up using bar soap (I'm late 40s) and never really made the switch to shower gel, because it just never struck me as working very well at actually getting me clean. I like a proper lather.

userxx · 29/03/2023 19:50

I use Palmolive soap and it doesn't dry my skin out. Shower gel on the other hand!

PurpleParrotfish · 29/03/2023 19:50

Maybe it’s just because you’re used to shower gel? I usually use bar soap and find the (I guess moisturising) residue that shower gel leaves on skin a bit disconcerting. I rinse but my skin doesn’t feel clean!

Midnight0 · 29/03/2023 19:51

We switched to Dove bars from shower gels for money saving reasons, and my skin feels great. I've always had dry skin and used moisturiser after showers anyway.

GivingItAWhirl · 29/03/2023 19:52

I recommend Friendly soap - we use it for body and hair and shaving - lots of variety on their website and they are environmentally friendly!

WhisperingAutistic · 29/03/2023 19:53

I'm another TK MAXX soap user.
Shower gel leaves a residue which I really don't like the feel of. If I feel dry, I moisturise.

Dove spears. Never shower gels

Spanielsarepainless · 29/03/2023 19:54

I use the the green Pears soap.

Catspyjamas17 · 29/03/2023 19:54

No, soap makes my skin squeak with dryness. Most shower gel does not "end up down the drain", you only need a tiny bit on a mitt, brush or sponge and I only need body lotion occasionally.

Dove spears. Never shower gels

soap .* not spears

emptythelitterbox · 29/03/2023 19:55

Always use bar soap. It gets you much cleaner and is much better for the environment than body washes and shower gels.
