Does anyone use soap instead of shower gel?

I've seen it recommended loads on here but I have a question...

I tried using just a soap bar and I feel loads cleaner, squeaky clean and fresher for longer

However, it really does seem to dry out the skin? I don't know how to describe it, but basically it's fine when cleaning with it but when you rinse it under water, the skin has this tight feeling?

I don't mean dry skin when dry if that makes sense.

What soaps do people use that don't have this as any soap I've ever tried does this?

Definitely.
Bar soap all the way.
Using bottled shower gel is just another way of creating extra plastic waste.

What do people mean 'dove isn't soap'? Genuine question as I was going to reply yes, I use soap but see that dove isn't classed as soap 🙂

Maybe it’s just because you’re used to shower gel? I usually use bar soap and find the (I guess moisturising) residue that shower gel leaves on skin a bit disconcerting. I rinse but my skin doesn’t feel clean!

Same here, I can't cope with that slimy layer that's left on your skin when you wash with shower gel.

Simple soap or imperial leather. Shower gel irritates my ladyparts.

Stuckinmyhead9 · 29/03/2023 20:24

@Kissedbyfire1 what soap do you recommend?

IvyIvyIvy · 29/03/2023 20:26

Simple soap or olive oil soap bars. Scent free.

Take a look at The Dartmoor Soap company, they are made from all sorts of lovely skin friendly ingredients.

Watching this post with interest as I'd like to convert to soap bars too. I'll be having a look in TKMaxx!

I only wash the parts of me that are actively smelly or dirty with soap. And the only one of those parts that tends to get dry is my feet- oh, and hands, of course. I moisturise all over afterwards anyway. I'd never use soap on my face unless it had mud or paint or something on it. Water's fine otherwise.

I'm happy with the cheapest bog standard soap, but do stock up on Savon de Marseille (sweet almond scent) when I go to France.

Messyhair321 · 29/03/2023 20:28

yes I make soap bars and use them, I much prefer bars to shower gel and I don't find that it dries the skin out at all

AliceMcK · 29/03/2023 20:29

Always used soap, Palmolive or Nivea. May use a shower gel afterwards occasionally if I fancy something scented but I have to clean with soap.

Pseudonamed · 29/03/2023 20:29

I use dove on my entire body including my face and it has never been an issue. I don't even own shower gel. Always thought you would get a foof infection if you used that there and never feel clean unless I have used soap.

Rubytoos · 29/03/2023 20:29

I switched back to soap instead of shower gel to save a plastic container every time. Don’t use cheap soap, use a bar that costs >£4 as it will have a better blend of oils and softer on your skin.

We use soap bars in the shower and in our bathroom sink. \we have hand wash and shower gel in the rooms that guests use.

We buy the organic soaps from The Highland Soap Company.
www.highlandsoaps.com/collections/organic-soaps

We have them in hessian type bags, hung from small hangers in the shower. They can be used with or without the bag.

We also use shampoo and conditioner soap bars too, from Lush.

We have used various soaps from a range of places. We really like the Highland ones and that kind of style.

Simple soap here, unless by some miracle I've managed to find green Pears in the shop. Comes in paper wrap, all nicely eco. (Pears not quite as plastic-free!)

CatNamedBob · 29/03/2023 20:33

What oils do people use to moisturise? I put mine onto wet skin but I'm getting build up on my towels

Atethehalloweenchocs · 29/03/2023 20:33

I use soap to cut down on the number of plastic bottles I use. Dove is great.

Pseudonamed · 29/03/2023 20:34

Also use soap bar for shampoo but cannot give up my plastic bottle of conditioner.

mybeautifuloak · 29/03/2023 20:34

Savon de Marseille. Very simple soap with very few ingredients. Mainly olive oil

Fromwetome · 29/03/2023 20:35

I don't from a pure lazy point of view, I live in a hard water area and that plus the residue from bar soap..too much cleaning involved so I just use gel.

Denise82 · 29/03/2023 20:36

I use Dove shea butter soap bar, smells so amazing. Also use the coconut garnier shampoo bar and then the Palmers coconut leave in conditioner spray. Hair has never been so soft, and the soap doesn't dry out my skin at all. I keep the soap and shampoo bars in some stick to the wall clear soap holders, my bathroom is tiled so they are stuck by a sucker thingy 🙂

Rebel2 · 29/03/2023 20:37

I use both
Base cleanse under arms, feet, sweaty bits with soap and exfoliating gloves
Finish off with a moisturising shower gel or oil

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/03/2023 20:38

No shower gel for me, brillo pad here, with a green Scotchbrite less-scratchy thing for those 'sensative' areas.

bellac11 · 29/03/2023 20:38

Love soap bars, I also use them to wash my hair sometimes, interspersed with shampoo

The best ones were sheep and goats milk soaps, but very good quality ones I will also tolerate. But I also love things like palmolive and I used to love those deodourising soaps like sheild or whatever it was called

I just use moisteriser after showering.

Reinventinganna · 29/03/2023 20:39

I use a Salicylic Acid soap and keep it in a soap dish with a lid (one in my gym bag too).
