What do you actually want for your birthday?

Maybe something people wouldn’t think you would like?

Maybe something that’s actually really simple?

Maybe something crazy out there?

Am I shamelessly hoping I can steal some gift ideas for my dear mothers upcoming birthday? Yes I am!

I would really love some new pots for my garden. And candles, I actually love candles but no one ever buys them for me…maybe I wouldn’t love them so much if they did 😁

My mum loves a list so for her birthday recently I got her some pretty notepads.

Sevensilverrings · 28/03/2023 22:46

Ooh. Lovely to fantasise…

a ginkgo tree
a vintage suffrage broach
hand thrown mugs
a gallery visit with lunch
handmade paper (for painting)
a hedgehog house
a travel wrap in emerald green
some new to me gin in a lovely bottle.

now Back to the real world…!

Diversion · 28/03/2023 23:07

A Le Creuset kettle, in black of course for my soon to be new kitchen, a voucher for a drumming lesson because it is on my bucket list, I would likely be rubbish but would love to try. A voucher towards a new tattoo and/or piercing because I need them but cannot justify the cost and am very jealous of the new tattoos my sons in law and daughters have recently had. Flowers because I love them, a bottle of my usual red wine and anything off my Amazon wishlist is always appreciated, even the pre-loved books which my children hate to buy me but which I love to receive. I am very much not fancy and expensive handbags and toiletries would be wasted on me 😄

Mixkle · 28/03/2023 23:09

A day - maybe even two days - where I don’t have to prepare any food for others. Not even a single snack. 😍😍😍

But I guess that isn’t what you mean, in which case er a really warm fleece top that looks classy.

Not a candle I’m afraid. Have been given zillions and never used them.

ShakeYourFeathers · 28/03/2023 23:10

I‘m after something like this-have you found a nice one??

Not yet! I've only looked online and o want to make sure it's the right size and so want to see some in person

Gingerkittykat · 28/03/2023 23:10

An audible subscription.
Some nice chocolates.

Absolutely no booze, flowers, candles, smellies, etc.

Me, my sister, DD and niece always go for a meal on our birthdays, it's my nieces birthday this week so she gets to choose where we go. My birthday is next and I'm happy going to the same Indian restaurant I've been to for years.

Avarua2 · 28/03/2023 23:20

Some Tahitian pearl earrings

RoseMartha · 28/03/2023 23:38

A day off from the teen dc's who have complex needs and cant be left alone for long. Wont happen though. My exh is working that afternoon and evening so that is that. No one else will have them unless I need emergency medical attention.

Maybe I will opt for a day with no teen drama or abusive name calling directed at me from the dd's. That would be nice.

I just want peace and quiet.

MyBloodyMaryneedsmoreTabasco · 28/03/2023 23:43

Currently, I REALLY want Chemical Brothers tickets. And vintage 🍸 cocktail glasses. Turtle doves wrist warmers in pink or purple. Or a large Psycho Killer framed print.

JulieHoney · 29/03/2023 00:04

Theatre tickets (and rail tickets as needed)

Above almost everything I like to see a play that I’m interested in, even if no one else is.

ToWhitToWhoo · 01/04/2023 20:11

To be allowed to totally forget the LOATHSOME occasion, and not have my new age rubbed in, or treated as a special day in any way!

Now what would I like for my UNbirthday? That's another, and more cheerful topic!

Books.

A book token,

A folk music CD or two.

Chocolates!

Craft models of owls, or owl cushions (I collect these; hence my username)

As a non-driver, for someone who does drive, to drive me somewhere nice that I otherwise couldn't get to easily -e.g. in the countryside,

Yes, I'm greedy!

MissingMoominMamma · 01/04/2023 20:16

I’d like someone to plan a long walk that ends in a lovely pub for food.

I’d like them to take a flask to share, and a snack for the route.

And I’d like them to drive.

I work in a shop, and one elderly customer was absolutely delighted with a snapshot of some of her family and grandchildren she been given on Mother'sDay. Something simple, but she got the 6x4 photo out to show me.

BeaLola · 01/04/2023 21:26

I do like a good soap - the Kew Garden ones are lovely
Flowers or potted flowers/plant for garden
Diptyque satin body oil
Jo Malone vitamin E scrub
Stationery
At the moment cushions for my outdoor bench
Straw bag for summer
Lunch out with DH
Picture of DH and DS now to go with the ones from when DS was little (now 15)
DVD of Mrs Harris goes to Paris
Slip silk thin scrunchies in a different colour

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 01/04/2023 21:32

Theatre tickets all the way - I got my mum tickets for Shirley Valentine for her birthday. It's my birthday in April and DH is getting me tickets for the revival of Aspects Of Love, (I have a deep and unashamed love of Michael Ball).

Cuwins · 01/04/2023 22:08

My birthday is coming up and my list so far has: a mini cool bag for work pack lunches, water bottle, 5 minute mum book, travel mug, Disney world book, chocolate, socks, M&S vouchers for new underwear and pinch of nom cookbook.
Failing that Amazon vouchers always work well.
Definitely not- jewellery, toiletries, candles, flowers or perfume.

My gran is paying for tickets to football at Wembley for me- that's a fab present!

Peakypolly · 01/04/2023 22:19

Nothing, because fuss about birthdays is for children, not adults
I treasure birthdays much more as an adult than when a child- now I realise how finite they are!

Tickets - stand-up, theatre or music.
A bay tree.
Overnight stays with delicious food.

A deep clean/de-clutter, but that is what I won't get.

Swanhilde · 01/04/2023 22:19

My birthday is next week. I have hinted at

  • pond in a pot
  • dwarf eucalyptus bush
  • anything for the garden really
  • bottle of my purfume
  • anything Body Shop pink grapefruit
  • shift dress
  • swimming costume

🤞🎂🥳

citygirl7206 · 03/04/2023 12:06

We've recently discovered sevenyays.com
They make seven day advent style countdown gift calendars for birthdays and other occasions. You get to choose what you want to put in, loads to choose from. Sent a few to friends and all have been well received. They're really unique and come packed in really lovely looking boxes.

emmathedilemma · 03/04/2023 12:11

I'd like someone to buy me a present that doesn't require me to specify exactly what I want and send them the weblink to it such that I might as well have bought it myself!! Just take the risk and get a gift receipt if you're worried I won't like it or just buy me a bottle of wine and some chocolate which you can guarantee will get consumed.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/04/2023 12:16

Same here @emmathedilemma

If I've chosen something, I've done the work, it's not 'from anyone' if it requires me to send them a weblink for them to click on.

Plus anyone who knows me knows that gin, fizzy wine or anything from Hotel Chocolat or similar will always go down well so I'd much rather have something like that than something they've chosen that I have to wear, use or look at, but have not chosen myself because 9/10 it's not going to be the one I want.

LibertyLily · 03/04/2023 12:49

Something from Liberty - an original piece of Art Nouveau jewellery would be the dream. Otherwise a handbag, vase or cushion....

A piece of art (my choice as I have quite specific tastes, lol) or even a print - after much hinting DH got me a print from punkhaus for Christmas (not my main gift which was a Matthew Williamson mirror) which he then framed in one of my many vintage frames. Cost pennies but I was delighted!

Another David Austin rose (I've got 60+ but you can never have too many imho) or something else gardening related.

Definitely not an experience, although a nice meal out at a favourite restaurant would be lovely.

Cherrysoup · 03/04/2023 13:00

I had no idea what I wanted. Fortunately, my DH knows not to get random stuff and got me a really good bottle of vodka and I asked for a mini birthday cake which has so far lasted 3 days.

Maymi19 · 03/04/2023 13:50

I love traveling, so a trip anywhere would be nice. But I find that I also highly appreciate gifts that were well thought out. One of my favorites was a cute personalised notebook that my niece gave me for my birthday last year. It had my initials on it, and on the first page was a touching letter she wrote for me. I honestly have never used it yet. I think I'll just keep it like that forever, and maybe tease her about it years later when she's older lol. 💝

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 03/04/2023 13:52

It's my birthday soon, I've asked for:
A heavier kettlebell
Trainers
A loaf tin
Scented candles
Nars blusher

But are very specific things that I've been making a note of for a while
