If you get in a taxi on your own - where do you sit?

I got an Uber yesterday on my own. I sat in the back and had a lovely peaceful 10 minutes

One of the people I was meeting commented that it was weird and I should have sat in the front. Just wondering what the norm is?

I used to use a local taxi firm back in my clubbing days and knew the drivers so used to sit in the front and have a chat. I don't know any Uber drivers though and didn't want to make pointless small talk.

In the back :)

HighInfidelity · 25/03/2023 11:25

Always in the back, I would feel awkward in the front.

pensionconfusion · 25/03/2023 11:25

If I'm on my own I sit in the front so I can chat with the driver.

Verylongtime · 25/03/2023 11:26

Always in the back. It would never occur to me to sit in the front.

IHateLegDay · 25/03/2023 11:27

Always in the back.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 25/03/2023 11:27

Always in the back.

Crumpetdisappointment · 25/03/2023 11:27

in the back seems the right thing to do

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/03/2023 11:28

The front, unless I have stuff to organise. Then I'll sit in the back.

Verylongtime · 25/03/2023 11:29

Actually, I think sitting in the front if you don’t have to is a bit presumptuous. That’s the driver’s space. He probably doesn’t want to chat.

tonyslab · 25/03/2023 11:30

In the back, behind the driver but I'm paranoid and also always let someone know the number plate of the car I'm in.

(Use cabs nearly everyday as I don't drive)

Bigminnie1 · 25/03/2023 11:30

Always sit in the back.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/03/2023 11:30

In the back behind the front passenger seat, always.

Mammyloveswine · 25/03/2023 11:31

In the back after I was sexually assaulted by a driver when sitting in the front..

LivingDeadGirlUK · 25/03/2023 11:31

Always the back, sitting in the front seems a bit of an invasion of the drivers personal space. If you were getting a black cab it wouldn't be an option.

Workyticket · 25/03/2023 11:32

Ha! I knew I wasn't being weird!

Person who commented was a bloke by the way. My dh always sits in the front if he's on his own too.

City - back
Small town or countryside - front

Where I come from, it would be considered rude to sit in the back, but in big cities it seems to be the norm. Not sure sitting in the front is even allowed where I live now, maybe only tolerated if the taxi is full.

BMW6 · 25/03/2023 11:36

I always sit in the back, but DH always goes in the front.

FrankandWalters · 25/03/2023 11:37

Front in the country or if I know the driver, otherwise behind the passenger seat.

Yes, I'm in London and it'd be seen as strange to get into the front of an Uber or even cab.

Turnipworkharder · 25/03/2023 11:39

You mean cab ,as in a normal car ?
A taxi to me is London black cab, where the only place to sit is in the back.

If getting in a cab I'd always sit in the back.

Whichwhatnow · 25/03/2023 11:39

In the back! The only time I've ever sat in the front is when I'm with friends and all the back seats are filled. I feel like the front is the driver's space?

EntreMummy · 25/03/2023 11:41

Always in the back - as a lone woman travelling in a taxi this is the best way to protect yourself from any potentially dodgy drivers.

Years ago a good friend of mine was sexually assaulted whilst sitting in the front seat of a mini cab.

Its absolutely common sense for women to sit in the back.

and in London black cabs everyone sits in the back anyway.

megletthesecond · 25/03/2023 11:41

Back left.

This, never in the front.
