If you get in a taxi on your own - where do you sit?

I got an Uber yesterday on my own. I sat in the back and had a lovely peaceful 10 minutes

One of the people I was meeting commented that it was weird and I should have sat in the front. Just wondering what the norm is?

I used to use a local taxi firm back in my clubbing days and knew the drivers so used to sit in the front and have a chat. I don't know any Uber drivers though and didn't want to make pointless small talk.

In the back! The only time I've ever sat in the front is when I'm with friends and all the back seats are filled. I feel like the front is the driver's space?

Same here although with my dodgy knees, I find getting in the back seat is difficult but I feel more relaxed in the back if on my own. Helpful drivers pull the front seat forward to help me but others leave me to struggle!

GotABeatForYouMama · 25/03/2023 11:57

In the back behind the driver.

Tink1990 · 25/03/2023 12:00

Always in the back. Unless there's 3 of us, then I'm happy to go in the front. But just me, or me and one other, I'd sit in the back.

KatherineJaneway · 25/03/2023 12:03

I always sit in the back. Not sure why, habit probably.

cocksstrideintheevening · 25/03/2023 12:05

Always in the back. If the four of us get an Uber somewhere DH goes in the front.

OldTinHat · 25/03/2023 12:14

I always ask where they would prefer me to sit as I'm never sure either. They always say in the front.

UseOfWeapons · 25/03/2023 12:16

In the back. I used to sit in the front until I was assaulted by a taxi driver.

Yeah… That’s not a good reason for sitting in the front, though.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/03/2023 12:20

Front as you can child lock the back seats

googlejourney · 25/03/2023 12:28

In the back.

Making small talk with chatty taxi drivers is one if my all time pet hates.

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 25/03/2023 12:29

In the back for the love of God.

happysingleversary · 25/03/2023 12:31

The front so I can chat to the driver
usually have a laugh with cabbies

since covid though I ask them front or back and sometimes they say back

Always the back, sitting in the front seems a bit of an invasion of the drivers personal space. If you were getting a black cab it wouldn't be an option.

This.

StopStartStop · 25/03/2023 12:34

As a long-term taxi customer, I sit in the back. I am a respectable woman.

teenagetantrums · 25/03/2023 12:38

In the back behind the front passenger seat. I don't want to make small talk with anyone. My DP also female always sits in the front she loves to chat to anyone.

Firsttimecaller · 25/03/2023 12:38

I ask permission to sit in the front due to my disability (leg room and head room) ; they've never said no! The driver usually has to tidy up the space as that's their "office" IYSWIM.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/03/2023 12:41

The back always.

I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t unless the car was full. I get lots of taxis in the country and cities, I am sure the driver likes his privacy too, and also air space these days.

Why would you sit where they want not where you want?

happysingleversary · 25/03/2023 12:44

Where I live it’s always been the norm to go in front and cabbies are super friendly
ove had some of the best laughs of my life on a cab ride but I’m a really sociable person

SunhatsAndFlipFlops · 25/03/2023 12:45

When I was younger ( at uni, early 20s) I used to sit in the front. I guess I was more social back then.
Always sit in the back now.

SleepyTraveller · 25/03/2023 12:46

In the back, except for long journeys in minicabs, when I ask the driver and usually end up in the front

NooNakedJacuzziness · 25/03/2023 12:50

Always in the back - I'd feel like I was encroaching on the drivers space if I sat in the front, seems a bit presumptuous. It would be so awkward if they weren't the chatty sort too.

SmartHome · 25/03/2023 13:26

I always sit in the back. It would feel weird going on the front.

user1471517095 · 25/03/2023 13:39

In the back, behind the drivers seat. That way it's difficult to get a weapon aimed at me. And yes, I know that's an unlikely scenario but it makes me feel safer.

IsaiditwasLighthearted · 25/03/2023 14:29

In the back, behind the passenger seat so if I needed to get out quickly I'm on the pavement side.

Had a couple of friends when younger/students who were groped by drivers when they sat in the front. They seems to think them being friendly/chatty meant they could attempt to put their hands up their skirts HmmHmmHmm

I also don't always want to chat, sometimes I have stuff to do on my phone emails etc or I'm mentally prepping for a meeting or I'm just tired and not in the mood. Easier to sit quietly in the back.
