If you get in a taxi on your own - where do you sit?

I got an Uber yesterday on my own. I sat in the back and had a lovely peaceful 10 minutes

One of the people I was meeting commented that it was weird and I should have sat in the front. Just wondering what the norm is?

I used to use a local taxi firm back in my clubbing days and knew the drivers so used to sit in the front and have a chat. I don't know any Uber drivers though and didn't want to make pointless small talk.

I'm up north - a taxi is a normal car. We don't have black cabs. Anything other than a standard car would just be a 'big taxi' 🙈🤣

Always in the back. Whenever we’ve had a group of people and one has to sit in the front, the taxi driver always has to clear their bits and pieces (newspaper, snacks etc) from the front seat

Always in the back

Hbh17 · 25/03/2023 17:59

Always use black cabs, so obviously in the back. But on a rare occasion when using a minicab/standard saloon, it would also be the back - would never occur to me to sit anywhere else.

In the back.

And I HATE chatty taxi drivers, so if they want to chat I keep replies minimal so they quickly get the message. Why would I want to chat with a complete stranger, especially when they are supposed to be concentrating on their driving?

MyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 25/03/2023 18:25

You sit in the back. I’m sure the Uber driver would prefer that as well. I would find it strange if someone hopped into the front seat with the driver unless there were more people than could fit in the back seat. Every Uber or taxi driver I’ve ever had always has things sitting in their passenger seat anyway.

emmathedilemma · 25/03/2023 18:40

Usually in the back although we sometimes use a car service for work that’s more of a chauffeur service (sounds posher than it is) and I usually ask if he minds if I sit in the front because I’m usually going further than I would in a taxi and I’m not good in the back of cars! Also, Dave the driver has the inside info on all the goss going on in our company as he drives all the bigwigs around ;)

Back

I can’t imagine choosing the front seat

Waitingfortaco · 25/03/2023 19:34

Back. Only sit in the front once the back is full. Or my friend who gets travel sick in the back of any car.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 25/03/2023 19:49

Back.

I'm extremely polite, but the driver and I are not friends and are not going to chat. They are giving me a lift. I am paying them to do so.

Tiani4 · 25/03/2023 19:57

You're not being weird

Most Uber or taxi drivers expect you to sit in the back seat. I ask permission to sit in the front seat (as I travel better that way)

Same

Snugglemonkey · 25/03/2023 20:07

Behind the driver.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 25/03/2023 20:46

In the back, opposite side to the driver. I say hello and confirm the address .
DH always sits in the front and tells the driver his life story and plans for the next year !!

amusedbush · 25/03/2023 21:50

Always in the back, behind the passenger seat.

To be honest, it has never occurred to me that you could sit in the front of a taxi/Uber. That seems weird to me.
