The previous thread filled up fast, so here's another one with a reasonably topical title!

Contract for child detention centres?

L1ttledrummergirl · 30/03/2023 18:51

Shameless.

Notonthestairs · 30/03/2023 18:52

So Sunak's wife and her mates get to chink glasses over their windfall and we pick up the tab for that too!

DuncinToffee · 30/03/2023 19:01

Oof

Left: King Charles rightly praises the Kinder Transport where children fled Nazis and got refuge in the UK

Right: "Child asylum seekers will be forcibly restrained if they ‘resist’ deportation, Home Office says"

I feel sick and angry. And other emotions I can’t even name. One part of my job is working in education for asylum seeking children. The groups I’m teaching now, the adorable, funny, spacey, clever, homesick, stressed, kind, big dreaming hardworking group of kids, might be the last who get to go to school, to get an education, to play football in local teams, to have fun at youth club, to eat snickers until they feel sick as a hobby, to go bowling with friends, just anything that makes them feel less alone, less traumatised for a moment. All of that torn away from them to satisfy this government’s racist, fascist base.

How can this be happening? How the fuck can this be happening?

Piggywaspushed · 30/03/2023 22:20

Oh beware, so sorry 😞

Fiona Bruce asks the #BBCQT audience is anyone supports the Rwanda refugee plan.

Nobody puts their hands up.

IClaudine · 30/03/2023 22:22

I don't know what to say, tbh. Hugs to you and the children you teach, beware.

Says it all, this priest from Bristol talking so humanely and eloquently about refugees in his parish

She deserves a case of it.

pointythings · 30/03/2023 22:48

So have the QT audience picks changed or are people genuinely getting fed up with the Tories? I really hope it's the latter.

Wow. 👏
And I bet if she'd been given a few more minutes she'd have had plenty more to say.

I don't think the BBC would have changed their audience formula. So I think it's people just having had enough.

I really hope you’re right. That woman should stand for parliament. That’s the kind of passion we need.

Notonthestairs · 30/03/2023 23:15

I've already seen complaints that the audience can't have been representative because nobody stuck their hand up to support the Rwanda "policy"

Or just maybe people just don't swallow the crap ministers and the media put out.

She is called Claire Stewart Hall

So this happened….They made me wait 50 minutes to speak so by the time I got there…

She was brilliant.

Deserves a bigger round of applause than exists.

Roussette · 31/03/2023 07:26

I have stopped watched BBCQT but do pick up all the relevant audience participation from Twitter or elsewhere.

I honestly think the tide has turned somewhat. Because from being rightwing rantings that typified QT ... this has stopped and people are really fed up. Well done Bristol, you did us proud.

I wonder though if the question was reversed and FB had asked who opposes the Rwanda policy if every hand would have gone up?

It is much easier to sit on ones hands, especially when raising them would have one picked out on TV and identified as an uncaring racist even if that is what one is.

I agree. But anything, just anything, to show that this is an unpopular policy is a good thing I think.

And also on QT sometimes those sort of questions have been asked and hands have shot up! Safety in number though I agree.

Notonthestairs · 31/03/2023 07:37

If nothing else the lack of hands shows ambivalence or at least recognition that it's not the sort of policy you want your face or name attached to.

Notonthestairs · 31/03/2023 08:02

The @LibDems
last night gained Gloucester's Westgate ward from the Tories.
LDEM: 43.2% (+16.5)
CON: 29.9% (-9.0)
Like all council by elections these are small turnouts.
Still, LDs will be cheered that the defeated Tory candidate was an ex-Brexit Party candidate just 4 yrs ago.

Tory party still welcoming in Brexit Party supporters I see.
