The previous thread filled up fast, so here's another one with a reasonably topical title!

Ah, but didn't we learn recently that yougov was set up by some kind of jumped up left wing metropolitan elite investment banking blob thing?

pointythings · 27/03/2023 18:19

@jgw1 yep, it was that guy 'Mad But Not Quite As Mad As Mad Nad Nad' Zahawi. (This is his NacMacFeegle official name).

The teaching union NEU has recommended its members reject the latest pay offer from the government - £1000 one off payment this year, 4.3% uplift next year. They say it'll have to come out of school budgets, meaning cuts.

Piggywaspushed · 27/03/2023 18:34

It's a terrible offer . At the top end of experience , Scottish classroom teachers will earn more than 11k pa than English colleagues.

Piggywaspushed · 27/03/2023 18:34

You get my drift...

tobee · 27/03/2023 19:17

Roussette · 27/03/2023 14:33

And an outright lie that he has a big korean community in his constituency. He does NOT. That is the adjoining borough, Kingston/Surbiton which is Ed Davey LD.

(Family live there so I know)

Hmm, I'm in his constituency. New Malden is supposedly the big South Korean population. There's lots of great Korean restaurants but I'd have to go and check constituency boundaries; I would have guessed NM is in Wimbledon.

tobee · 27/03/2023 19:22

Rousette is of course correct according to Wikipedia!

tobee · 27/03/2023 19:27

I mean it's probably a sprawl but ....

Anyway, Stephen Hammond can bog off. He was a remainer who managed to remain (geddit?) after the Johnson purge. Lib Dems seem to think they are a shoo in for GE despite what that predictor thing we had on the threads recently. Wimbledon is an unusual 3 way seat - was Labour under New Labour having been Conservative for yonks.

Yes, he is Wimbledon

I saw this tweet from the Secret Headteacher

So now we see the value of education.

£1000, before tax, and a below inflation increase for next year of 4.5%.

Not fully funded.

Less than fire service, doctors, railway workers and the offer to teachers in Wales and Scotland.

That’s how little they value education.

tobee · 27/03/2023 20:42

Now I'm confused @Roussette . Stephen Hammond is Wimbledon yes. But NM = New Malden is not. As you said.

Victims of crimes are forced to wait nearly 3 years to see their case come to court - no wonder victims are pulling out of prosecutions.
This is what happens when you underfund the legal system - not enough police, not enough barristers, not enough judges and not enough courts open.

"Over the last few years, legal experts have blamed a backlog of cases — which stands at about 60,000 — for the significant number of alleged victims who are quitting prosecutions because many find waiting up to three years for a case to come to trial to be too stressful.
The figures were obtained by BBC’s Newsnight, which will broadcast analysis of the data on Monday. They show that over the first six months of 2022-23, 61 rape trials were abandoned after alleged victims withdrew support for prosecutions."

Roussette · 27/03/2023 21:16

I don't know, I don't live there but I have family who live in New Malden, where there is a huge korean population, so they tell me.

And South Wimbledon where there isn't!

Dr Mary Bousted(National Education Union) calls Nick Robinson out after he describes her possible successor as an "extremist"

"That's an outrageous slur... that's really base... & I'm very sorry you've done that, Nick"

Well done Mary. She did sound very pissed off. However she did open herself up to his line of attack somewhat - she’s normally more careful.
He was being a total arse.

mibbelucieachwell · 28/03/2023 09:13

Well done Mary.

I know this isn't the point - but what a poor speaker Sir Gav is.

Grocery inflation in March was up to 17.5% - or a rise of £837 to the average annual grocery bill.

Not only that, but food - including fruit, veg, eggs, chips, cheese - is up by even more and is only held down by lower inflation on alcohol, due to gov't freezing duty. ~AA

How the hell has he managed to rise to the top in politics? 'Parliament' literally means 'a place of talking' and that fuckwit can't string a whole sentence together. I would suggest a drinking game where you take a swig every time he say 'em-err' but you'd be shitfaced before you got to the middle.

Blossomtoes · 28/03/2023 14:01

He said sort of about a million times. I had no idea he was so inarticulate.

Notonthestairs · 28/03/2023 15:07

I'm intrigued that the alarms went off in Williamson's mind but seemingly not so much with the others! I'll credit him & Hancock for at least mentioning their constituents.

£10,000 a day essentially for access to Parliament. It's not what you know but who you know. No wonder they are clocking up multiple jobs.

Morning,

Immigration minister set to announce the controversial use of 2 RAF bases to house asylum seekers today.

Barges & ferries have also been looked into by Home Office.

It comes as a report finds £3.5bn spent on accommodation in 2023 - blaming the asylum backlog.

This report in The Times last year suggests the idea of routinely housing migrants on ships was "laughed off the table" when Sunak raised it in 2020 as it might breach Refugee Convention and involve "astronomical" costs.

Notonthestairs · 29/03/2023 08:40

Ive just been reading about the ships & RAf bases - absolutely no mention of the cost. I hope somebody is tracking who gets the contracts for this little venture because I would bet that there will be a Tory donor somewhere benefitting from it.
