After nappies, do children need to wear pants under pjs?

My preschooler has been dry for weeks at night now so tonight we are going nappy free. But I'm wondering if he still needs pants under his pjs?!

How do I not know these simple facts in life 🙈

I wear knickers with my pjs so I would say yes!

BendingSpoons · 22/03/2023 18:34

My kids don't wear underwear with pyjamas.

JennyDarlingRIP · 22/03/2023 18:34

DS doesn't, we change PJs every day for him because he's a sweaty thing. It's also one less thing for him to navigate if they wake up bleary eyed to go to the toilet

I wouldn't. It'll give him more of a feeling that he's got a nappy on so he'd be more likely to have an accident.

CottonSock · 22/03/2023 18:35

I would in the early days as they might feel wet quicker. Then I give my kids the choice.

SarahLHs · 22/03/2023 18:36

My daughter doesn't wear any at night. She has a bath before bed and doesn't get up in the night to use the toilet so no need.

FrownedUpon · 22/03/2023 18:37

No, he doesn’t need to.

JJJSchmidt · 22/03/2023 18:39

No, I think it's healthy to let your bits breathe

olivehater · 22/03/2023 18:41

Mine wear pants but no pjs. Each to their own I guess.

Mumof1andacat · 22/03/2023 18:44

My ds has never worn pjs since about 2 or 3. He wore just a nappy at night, then pants and now boxers. He gets too hot for pjs.

Ringmaster27 · 22/03/2023 18:45

My eldest DD doesn’t, youngest Dd is still in pull ups at night.
DS forgoes pjs altogether and sleeps in his boxers 🤷🏻‍♀️

AnonymousArabella · 22/03/2023 18:47

My dc don’t wear pants under pjs. It’s just personal preference.

iusedtobeasize8 · 22/03/2023 18:49

My DD's didn't wear them when they were small hut jow as teenagers they do as they prefer to. I don't think there is a right or wrong answer tbh

23Elfie · 22/03/2023 18:50

DD is another pj hater she gets so hot so just knickers whatever the weather she's not bothered!
Me on the other hand pants and fluffy pjs all the way 😂

Sillysosij · 22/03/2023 18:51

No, I’m rather thrush-prone and so is DD, loose pj’s or nighties all the way!

liveforsummer · 22/03/2023 18:55

Very personal and you'll see many a debate on mumsnet about it. Personally we are a pants household (dc and adults). Some will insist you need to 'let the area breathe' as if it has its own respiratory system 😆

My DS wore "night time pants" for quite a while, absorbent pants that were good back up in case of bed wetting - if it was a big accident everything else would still get wet, but if it was a small accident then the pants would contain it and his PJs and bed were dry. He did have night time accidents for ages (and still does from time to time). But he stopped wearing the pants eventually and now just wears PJs.

HelloBunny · 22/03/2023 19:04

Always worn knickers. My boy will wear undies. DH doesn’t wear them under PJ bottoms. I remember a girl sleeping over at my house, as a kid, not wearing knickers under her nightdress. She said that her mum said it’s so her bum could grow. So, whatever you think!

Favouritefruits · 22/03/2023 19:05

Not in our house, my boys both sleep in just pjs no underwear.

alyceflowers · 22/03/2023 19:06

Surely this is up to you??
Put your kids to bed in whatever you want.

OhSnakesandBastards · 22/03/2023 19:07

No, best to let everything air

saveforthat · 22/03/2023 19:12

If people wear underwear under nightwear, do you then put clean underwear on the next day? For a family of four that would be a lot more washing every week. I couldn't be bothered with that.

Caspianberg · 22/03/2023 19:12

My toddler wears pants now nappies gone. I don’t Change pjs daily if clean enough and pants are smaller to wash than full pj change.

I don’t understand how people are ‘airing’ anything, if they are sleeping under a duvet? Surely a duvet blocks air more than a pair of pants

bakewellbride · 22/03/2023 19:13

No pants under PJs in our house.

It's far less washing than new pj's every day?!
