After nappies, do children need to wear pants under pjs?

My preschooler has been dry for weeks at night now so tonight we are going nappy free. But I'm wondering if he still needs pants under his pjs?!

How do I not know these simple facts in life 🙈

well baggy pj bottoms, and baggy bedding does mean there is much less heat and sweating down between your legs.

Theoldwoman · 22/03/2023 22:19

Of course, just like adults do!

I think I'm grim as F then. There are 5 of us. Clean pjs every night means 35 pairs of pjs a week to wash. Bollocks to that. Its not as if we're going out in them anywhere.
Clothes( and pjs) can be worn more than once.
With knickers you are going to the loo several times a day so they can get stained with pee and poo. They need to be changed daily.
With pjs you're just sleeping, and they are a much looser fit than knickers.
Wear them more than once. Save energy.

They might be looser but unless you stay completely still overnight then plenty fabric will move around and have contact with the areas underpants do in the day. I agree washing pj's daily is a lot so pants it is

ASGIRC · 22/03/2023 22:35

Huh... It never ever occured to me that people would NOT put pants on under PJs, or anything, really, particularly in children.
I am that person who does NOT understand how anyone goes commando. The mere concept baffles me. It sounds SOOOO uncomfortable!

I[m the freak that even sleeps in her bra, as I find it uncomfortable to not have one on, so yeah...

Pants under pjs for me! (though I sleep only in my underwear, unless its really cold, then a onesie or PJs)

BeanzToastie · 22/03/2023 22:35

Mine did, and then the pyjamas lasted longer before washing.
Threadworms - that's why, as you'll find out when your DC starts school!

NameChange30 · 22/03/2023 22:36

Threadworms?! 😱

If people wear underwear under nightwear, do you then put clean underwear on the next day? For a family of four that would be a lot more washing every week. I couldn't be bothered with that.

Yes it needs to be clean ffs

reluctantbrit · 22/03/2023 22:42

DD and I wear pants. DH doesn't wear them under his pyjamas.

I think it's personal preference but without pants I would expect the pyjamas to be washed more.

DD showers in the evening and changes into fresh pants. I shower in the morning and change pants then.

mondaytosunday · 22/03/2023 22:42

No never understood why anyone would wear pants to bed. My kids never did

HeadsShouldersKneesAndMyGreatAuntsWalkingStick · 22/03/2023 22:42

"Yes, I've never understood the 'letting your bits breathe' thing. Unless you're sleeping on your back with your legs open and no cover then there not going to be much air getting anywhere near your 'bits'"

😂😂😂 quite!!

Shoemadlady · 22/03/2023 22:44

One child does, the other doesn't. Down to personal choice

Whatafliberty · 22/03/2023 22:47

Pants under nightwear seems quite common but I have never been able to understand it. Surely 'bits' need airing at night. It all seems a bit repressive to me.

Sodullincomparison · 22/03/2023 22:56

When DD was just potty trained, we opted for short nightdresses so any quick dashes to the loo were easier for her.

We are not an underwear at night family and clean pjs each night.

I never understand the "airing"bit.

Bits need to be clean obviously but why the idea of air?

Runnerduck34 · 22/03/2023 23:08

No, I dont think children or adults need to wear pants under pyjamas.
Personal preference but I'm bit surprised so many people wear underwear under pyjamas, seems unnecessary imo.

GymNewbie · 22/03/2023 23:20

Nope mine don't.
But i wash pjs daily. Its no biggie.
Although dd does if wearing a nightie which isnt often.

1stWorldProblems · 22/03/2023 23:20

We went from nighties with no nappies, to nighties with no pants (as easy to go to the loo half asleep). Then they just copied us, so no one on our household wear anything in bed. We will own dressing gowns & pj's for wearing to breakfast or if we have guests.

Lovelyring · 22/03/2023 23:24

I wash DCs PJs every day because otherwise they smell of wet nappy.

I do not wash mine and DHs every day (more like once a month!)

I definitely wear knickers, I hate going commando and only do it if I absolutely have to. Like I have thrush or something. I go to the toilet in the night most nights and certainly don't want little bits of poo or wee on the PJs - gross.
