After nappies, do children need to wear pants under pjs?

My preschooler has been dry for weeks at night now so tonight we are going nappy free. But I'm wondering if he still needs pants under his pjs?!

How do I not know these simple facts in life 🙈

@liveforsummer as far as I'm aware she did not say she changed PJs every day.

Surely you change anything that's spent several hours next to bums/ genitals? I'm far from a clean freak either but if no pants I'd use fresh pj bottoms.

It's far less washing than new pj's every day?!

Does anyone in real life wash pjs every day? (pants or no pants). I sleep naked, my son just wears loose boxers and has done since he was a young child as he get so hot.

@saveforthat well I've no idea. I'd hope so if no pants are worn. I take it the boxers your dd wears get washed daily? How would it be different if they were longer in the leg?

Noicant · 22/03/2023 19:27

No DD doesn’t but thats because she still needs a pee at night and in the morning. It’s easier for her to not get in a tangle with knickers when she’s half asleep.

No they weren't washed daily.

If people wear underwear under nightwear, do you then put clean underwear on the next day? For a family of four that would be a lot more washing every week. I couldn't be bothered with that.

How big are your family's pants?! 28 pairs of knickers, some probably child-sized, can't be more than half a load surely? And as others said, it might mean you can stretch your jama bottoms another night or two.

No they weren't washed daily.

Sorry missed a bit. They weren't washed daily when he was a child. He's grown up now. I don't ask him if he washes his boxers daily.

SpamIAm · 22/03/2023 19:31

I'm confused as to why keeping your underwear on overnight would result in more washing?

I'm pro underwear. My husband is not. My daughter used to have free choice, until the first (so far only - touch all the wood) case of threadworm and now we are VERY much a pants on household.

TheFormidableMrsC · 22/03/2023 19:32

I think it's all about personal comfort. I always wore knickers under PJ's as a child and still do now. Neither of my kids did though.

Keeping it on implies it's the same ones you've had on all day. No that wouldn't create more washing.

People are talking about having a clean pair for sleeping in. That's what would create more washing.

No. You dont need pants under pjs. But half of MN will disagree so this thread will run and run

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 22/03/2023 19:39

Erm, as an adult woman don't you get the wedgie of hell if you don't wear pants under pjs?

Hedjwitch · 22/03/2023 19:40

Erm,no. Pjs are loose fitting..usually short ones for me..so wedgies not an issue at all

I don't think you need pjs at all if you are an adult and feel really restricted if I wear them in bed.

liveforsummer · 22/03/2023 19:41

@saveforthat , fair enough but I'm assuming the poster who thought fresh pants were needed for bed would also wash boxers daily because they are also pants. Surely pj bottoms are just long pants if nothing is worn underneath so would also need washed?

FlounderingFruitcake · 22/03/2023 19:44

No pants for DC here because they eat breakfast in their PJs, get food down the front and they always need a wash. If PJs are typically clean enough to be reworn then pants all the way so you’re just washing the pants. What would be grim AF is rewearing PJ bottoms worn without pants 🤢

Hedjwitch · 22/03/2023 20:18

I think I'm grim as F then. There are 5 of us. Clean pjs every night means 35 pairs of pjs a week to wash. Bollocks to that. Its not as if we're going out in them anywhere.
Clothes( and pjs) can be worn more than once.
With knickers you are going to the loo several times a day so they can get stained with pee and poo. They need to be changed daily.
With pjs you're just sleeping, and they are a much looser fit than knickers.
Wear them more than once. Save energy.

olivehater · 22/03/2023 21:06

Also pjs don’t have a proper gusset. Girls would end up with a front wedgie!!

Correlation · 22/03/2023 21:13

@FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb 😂I thought the same thing!

Season0fTheWitch · 22/03/2023 21:32

DDs wear clean pants with pyjamas, it helped them post potty training.

FWIW, we all wear clean PJS every day, and 2 pairs of underwear each day too

Was just about to post this! Surely no one is so disgusting that they wouldn't wear pants under pyjamas and rewear them?!

I get a couple of days wear out of my pjs because I wear pants underneath. Rewearing them when you haven't used underwear is like the equivalent of turning your pants inside out to get another wear.

greenspaces4peace · 22/03/2023 22:06

if your little one pees during the night the tiny bit of underwear isn't going to stop you needing to change the panties/pj bottoms/and bedding.
i'm another one for air down there so loose baggy pj bottoms.
personally if just toilet trained i would make sure the bed is padded/layered for a quick mid night emergency strip vs worrying about useless underwear under pj's.
the technique is easy to look up. sorry no link at the moment.

Very personal and you'll see many a debate on mumsnet about it. Personally we are a pants household (dc and adults). Some will insist you need to 'let the area breathe' as if it has its own respiratory system 😆

Yes, I've never understood the 'letting your bits breathe' thing. Unless you're sleeping on your back with your legs open and no cover then there not going to be much air getting anywhere near your 'bits'
