Inspired by the truly wonderfully “things that are utterly fascinating” thread also in chat, I was wondering if people had any good recs for podcasts around fascinating subjects?

I’ve recently discovered “the rest is history” which is about different historical figures and events and is absolutely brilliant.

I love anything to do with history, social history, things like hidden London. Recently listened to a podcast about Grey Gardens which was also really fascinating.

any and all suggestions welcome, across any subjects!

This is great. Thanks all!

No Such Thing As A Fish by some of the QI Elves is fab, the each pick 4 favourite facts for the week and discuss them. It's really varied.

I also like You're Dead to Me, Rutherford and Fry, Life Scientific on BBC sounds. Uncanny I can only listen to with the lights on as I'm a cowardly custard and get freaked out too easily 😂

I loved the Witchfarm on BBC sounds. It's about a real life haunting that took place in the 90s in a Welsh farmhouse where a young family was living. It combines a radioplay with first hand accounts of the people who witnessed it. Totally captivated me.

Thank you for the Cautionary Tales recommendations! I've been bingeing it this afternoon and I love it. Very pleased there's so many episodes to listen to!

Cheat is a really interesting podcast.
Casefiles is also worth a listen.
Bad people & Evil genius are other favourites of mine.
Love a podcast!

MadeForThis · 10/03/2023 21:05

Down the Hill - the Delphi murders.
The witness - in his own words
Hunting Warhead.

GingerAle1 · 10/03/2023 21:10

These look great
But where do you all get the time to listen so often? I have an endless list to get tnrough and that's before I saw this thread!

Perfectlystill · 10/03/2023 21:36

Down the Hill
Redhanded - true crime
Older & Wider - laugh out loud funny, this is women chatting

FairIce · 10/03/2023 21:42

Philosophize This.

DS put me onto it. Philosophy explained from all angles, Aristotle to Confucius.

Things in Jars is great. 2 museum curators looking at weird and wonderful things in museum collections.

Mummatron3000 · 10/03/2023 22:14

Stuff You Should Know

You’re dead to me (history podcast from BBC)

The Curious Cases of Rutherford & Fry (science podcast from BBC)

Eureka!

Mummatron3000 · 10/03/2023 22:15

Also the Museum of Curiosity series on bbc sounds is great as well

OxygenthiefexH · 10/03/2023 22:15

following breathlessly. And adding Modern Wisdom. Omg so so good and not dumbed down.

MotherofMigraines · 10/03/2023 22:30

Criminal is fab and loads to listen to

WeAreBorg · 10/03/2023 22:33

Agree You’re dead to me is great - historian and a comedian discuss topics
Bad people - criminal psychologist and a comedian discuss crimes and that
I seem to like things with an expert and also a comedian

I like having radio 4 on in the background and end up listening to random documentaries about things I would never have chose to listen to but turn out to be fascinating!

MrsJackRackham · 10/03/2023 22:47

Gone Medieval is about, well, all things medieval. From royalty to social history.
Time Travels is a Scottish podcast about ordinary people throughout history. My fav.
Stuff You Missed in History Class focuses on one person or event and tells the story, really well researched.

Lampan · 10/03/2023 22:52

Not so much factual/intellectual but I found Twin Flames absolutely fascinating!

Greengrassgone · 10/03/2023 23:11

I too love 99% invisible - lucky you, you have ten years of episodes and some of the early years are the best. You'll find lists online of people's top 10 episodes - I loved the Mojave phone booth one in particular. Roman Mars has a beautiful voice.

Also like Sidedoor. It's a Smithsonian podcast and every episode is about the story or cultural significance of something in the Smithonian collection.

@GingerAle1 i listen when I’m doing the housework, or sometimes when working out. I also listen with one ear bud when walking about with DS in the pushchair when he’s happily reading a book or playing with something then I can pause it to chat to him etc so I choose podcasts that I can kind of tune in and out to for that as I’m not paying full attention.
I used to listen on my commute but now I work for myself from home and can’t listen and work as I stop paying attention to work!

I love the In Our Time podcasts from the BBC . Discussions of a diverse range of topics chaired by Melvyn Bragg between top academics in the field. Covers history, philosophy, science, religion, mathematics., everything.

A great way to quickly learn about so many areas of knowledge. There is a vast back catalogue on BBC Sounds going back to the 1990s. Difficult to wade through the list.to find topics of interest, though, an index by subject area would be useful.

muststopdrinking · 11/03/2023 08:20

Extraordinary Lives - stories from real people including snipers, plane crash survivors, hostages etc. it's a Lad Bible production, but don't let that put you off, it is really good!

This is Actually Happening

This Podcast Will Kill You

National Park After Dark

Against the Odds

S Town (in fact, any of the Serial or American Life podcasts!)

So many good ones to choose from!
