Inspired by the truly wonderfully “things that are utterly fascinating” thread also in chat, I was wondering if people had any good recs for podcasts around fascinating subjects?

I’ve recently discovered “the rest is history” which is about different historical figures and events and is absolutely brilliant.

I love anything to do with history, social history, things like hidden London. Recently listened to a podcast about Grey Gardens which was also really fascinating.

any and all suggestions welcome, across any subjects!

One of my favourite ever podcasts is Shreds: Murder in the Dock, it’s just so well told as well as being a fascinating and tragic story.

There’s also one called The Sisters Who Left which is about women who joined and left Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity which is really eye opening.

99% Invisible is fantastic. The host, Roman Mars, has the best voice, would love him to narrate my life for a day. There is also a book, which is beautiful.

The Bowery Boys is good, about the ‘hidden history’ of New York.

Oh I love a podcast! My favourites are…..

▫️The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry
▫️The Life Scientific - Jim Al-Khalili
▫️Anything by the Van Tulleken twins - Made of Stronger Stuff is vg
▫️Room 5 (medical mysteries podcast)
▫️This Podcast May Kill You - all about various diseases. They did a great set on covid

I like science and medicine so tend to gravitate to that. I’m also listening to a podcast on Spotify about the trial of Lucy Letby. That’s very interesting but definitely not easy to listen to and certainly not for everyone.

Thanks for starting this! Some great suggestions!

Robert Breedlove what is money. The Saylor series has changed my financial life!

TherealmrsT · 09/03/2023 22:22

BBC 30 animals that made us smarter is very good, and More or Less is always fascinating.

Peckhaminn · 09/03/2023 22:25

LIFE CHANGING - AMAZING. About how real peoples lives changed within a matter of seconds or moments truly amazing.

Peckhaminn · 09/03/2023 22:28

Crime Junkie is also good. About how people just vanish into thin air. But I'm really surprised no one has mentioned Life Changing BBC Radio 4 - again.. amazing lol!

Tintackedsea · 09/03/2023 22:42

In Our Time on R4 is fantastic. I always find an episode to listen to.

DappledThings · 09/03/2023 22:45

Empire with Anita Anand and William Dalrymple.

Dillydallydilly · 09/03/2023 22:48

This Podcast Will Kill You. History of different diseasss / viruses / illnesses. They give the biochemical information on the subject but in very easy t understand form, and then focus a lot on the social and cultural history. The one on Minimato disease is a favourite - a good place to start. Super engaging and interesting.

In Our Time on R4 is fantastic. I always find an episode to listen to.

I think i must be the only person in the world to hate this. Everyone raves about it, I think it’s dreadful and can’t stand his voice.

chocciechocface · 09/03/2023 22:57

Great thread. I love podcasts. I've just listened to 'Who killed Daphne?' - really inspiring journalism podcast.

But there are two others that have stuck with me and I can't stop thinking about.

'Man in the window' about a serial rapist in the US in the 70s. Absolutely mind blowing insight into sexism and the way women were treated then.

'Root of Evil' - about the Black Dahlia murder and the Hodel family. Extraordinary story of a family confronting their past. Quite hard to listen to at times.

Pig Iron was good too. War journalism.

AinmÁlainn · 09/03/2023 22:58

Interesting, I find Roman Mars' voice incredibly annoying after about 10 mins!

I've just suggested Reply All and Heavyweight on another thread. Reply All is about internet ephemera and the hosts have a really good vibe between them. Heavyweight is hard to describe (I'm slightly drunk) but wonderful radio.

SusiePevensie · 09/03/2023 22:59

The Richest Hill. About Butte Montana.

Embelline · 09/03/2023 23:03

Thanks for so many suggestions I’m so pleased I started this thread.
there are so many to wade through when you just search and aren’t really sure what you’re looking for that I find it much easier to go on recommendations.
I am chuffed to have such a long list to try out now - keep ‘em coming!

Love TRIH and their sister podcast, The Rest is Politics.

Monkeytennis97 · 09/03/2023 23:16

For the Many is a great listen😊

RaininginDarling · 09/03/2023 23:40

Definitely recommend Stolen Hearts hosted by the brilliant Kerry Godliman. True crime, true love and truly original story telling. I laughed, my mouth hit the floor a dozen times and I was moved too.

Bobbi730 · 10/03/2023 01:02

The missing Crypto queen was utterly fascinating. I love Rutherford and Fry too. I'm not particularly a science buff but they do it so well.
I also enjoyed fortunately with Fi Glover and Jane Glover.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 10/03/2023 05:38

Agree with 99% Invisible, also Articles of interest, about clothing.
You're wrong about, can be hit and miss but recent episodes on Karen Carpenter and Preppy fashion were very interesting.

The box of oddities is great for weird and wonderful stories about strange and bizarre happenings from around the world.

The Witch Trials of JK Rowling was fascinating.

Visible Women with Caroline Criado Perez is a follow on podcast from her book Invisible Women about closing the Gender data gap.

Standard Issue - centres women in all it does - covers art, politics, literature, sport, media... Always some engaging content to listen to. It was originally started by Sarah Millican, although she doesn't feature in it any more.

MinnieMountain · 10/03/2023 05:51

Natalie Haynes Stands up for the Classics.
I love Empire too.

Kucinghitam · 10/03/2023 05:57

Almost all my regulars already listed here!

But I will add We Are History with Angela Barnes and John O'Farrell.

doubleshotcappuccino · 10/03/2023 05:58

Love Rest is Politics too and also Midpoint with Gaby Logan which has just released a new season .. interesting one with Gary Lineker.
Also the witch trials of JK Rowling is very good
