I'm 52 and we definitely did PE with snow on the ground.

I'm our aertex tops granny pants (brown 😭) abd gym skirt!

DS's rugby yes rugby tournament has been cancelled this afternoon because of the severe weather predicted. We're West Midlands;there's nary a flake.

Rugby gets cancelled because of frozen pitches though. The ground gets too hard.

Marchforward · 08/03/2023 09:59

Wearing joggers but yes we used footballs to play hockey in the snow. No wonder their is a generation who don’t like exercise.

Digimoor · 08/03/2023 09:59

Yes - we were forced to play hockey in snow - aertex top and skirt!
Teachers were in full ski gear

tattychicken · 08/03/2023 10:01

Yep. Cross country runs in shorts and aertex shirts through deep snow. I am 51.

Ridikulus · 08/03/2023 10:01

Yes we played hockey in the snow, tracksuit bottoms, artex t-shirts and sweatshirts. Gloves too. I don't ever remember being cold while playing and used to love it.

I understand games like rugby being canceled though

LovingACountryBoy · 08/03/2023 10:04

I’m early 40s and we didn’t do outdoor PE when it was snowing. We did something indoors instead.

Rowgtfc72 · 08/03/2023 10:07

Yes. Hockey and cross country running. Aertex top, big blue knickers and very small pe skirt.

carriedout · 08/03/2023 10:10

Not me because I skived it quite a lot so would have just refused.

I am glad things have improved very slightly in the PE world, but sadly PE is still stuck back in the dark ages.

CallieJones · 08/03/2023 10:11

I'm 52. We had a school tracksuit. I don't remember playing in snow

My experience of DS's club rugby is that if still continues in the snow!

I don't mind that the schools' tournament is cancelled, it's just a contrast to what we did in the 70s and 80s.

You beat me to it. Yes. I bloody hated those runs. The teachers used to park at the top of the downs with hot coffees for themselves, and make sure everyone checked in at the turnaround. Bastards.

ShrinkingIngrate · 08/03/2023 10:12

Were we hardier then or was life crueller?

‘Cross country’ in shorts and t-shirt. While the arsehole PE teachers were wrapped up drinking coffee. This was the 00s.

purpledalmation · 08/03/2023 10:13

I can remember doing hockey in a tiny gym skirt and t shirt. I also remember swimming lessons in our outdoor non heated pool in winter, but I'm not sure if that's a false memory! I know it was always bloody freezing

Bit of both. DH grew up in East Anglia and spent the whole day outside in all weathers shooting rats! They got paid by the farmers. Happy days.

Both!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 08/03/2023 10:14

God, yes. We did cross country in all weathers in a t shirt and shorts. Sadly no PE lessons were ever cancelled.... I think it has definitely made Gen X a tougher generation!

Shinyandnew1 · 08/03/2023 10:15

No-we didn’t do outside PE in the snow in the 80s.

I remember the whole school being closed for a whole week in January 1987 due to heavy snow. We live in the SE and hardly even seemed to get snow that heavy. I’ve not known any schools here to close for that long since then!

Coxspurplepippin · 08/03/2023 10:16

Yup, cross country and hockey in the snow. And in the pouring rain. And howling gales.

Gingernaut · 08/03/2023 10:17

We were bussed out to playing fields for some PE lessons and we played hockey in the rain and lacrosse in a sleet shower

Lovemusic33 · 08/03/2023 10:17

I’m 41, never did PE in the snow. We live down south so soon as there’s a sprinkling of snow school would close and life comes to a stand still 🤣. I can only remember going to school in snow once and someone got injured badly in a snowball fight at break time.

TheOrigRights · 08/03/2023 10:17

I'm 52 and did PE in the snow.
Airtex top and skirt.
I did like PE so apart from being freezing I didn't mind.

SockQueen · 08/03/2023 10:18

We did outdoor sport in virtually every weather, cross country in the snow was my least favourite. We did at least have tracksuits though! I'm 38.

Badatmostthings · 08/03/2023 10:19

Or the PE teacher breaking ice on the outdoor swimming pool before we jumped in!!! This was a comp primary in the north west brrrr.

Topseyt123 · 08/03/2023 10:19

Yes, I remember hockey in the snow. Cross country running too, and netball. We were only in our shorts and t-shirts. Not allowed to even wear a tracksuit, although the teachers were. They were in thick coats.

It was an utterly miserable experience and one of many reasons why I and others like me hated school PE so very much. It was abusive in the way it was taught.

I would truly hope that Rugby matches in snow affected areas are called off today. Dangerous frozen pitches too. Also, maybe it would be a sign that school PE might be just about beginning to emerge from medieval times.
