Does anyone else remember doing PE in the snow?

I'm 52 and we definitely did PE with snow on the ground.

I'm our aertex tops granny pants (brown 😭) abd gym skirt!

DS's rugby yes rugby tournament has been cancelled this afternoon because of the severe weather predicted. We're West Midlands;there's nary a flake.

Snow was only acceptable excuse for missing hockey, as the ball was white and they didn't want us losing them!

motherofkevinnotperry · 08/03/2023 12:57

Yes, schools didn't close we just got on with it. Buses would drop us off at the top of the village and we'd walk to school then back up the hill to get bus back home.

Cross country was still ran on snowy days.

JamPearl · 08/03/2023 12:58

I remember in the rain and cold but not snow

bugsinmybrain · 08/03/2023 12:59

Not quite 40 - we didn't do P.E on snow days- we got extra playtime for snowmen and snowballs

Hurts my heart when DS tells me they don't get allowed outside even at break if it's snowed. I know it's health and safety and admittedly there usually was a broken arm or something but those days were awesome

AndStand · 08/03/2023 13:00

Yes hockey in the snow wearing aertex top, gym skirt and navy knickers.
And netball in the snow too, same kit, no gloves allowed. My hands were so frozen I miss caught the ball and broke my little finger. My mother stormed up to the school to remonstrate with the PE teacher who let everyone wear gloves after that.

AndStand · 08/03/2023 13:03

Oh, and I'm 57..

One of my PE teachers got sacked for slapping a pupil who replied to that exact “I’m much colder than you” spiel with “Why don’t you run around the track as well then Miss”

Well done to that child.

spiderlight · 08/03/2023 13:04

Yes - hockey, in a tiny little gym skirt and a t-shirt, with hands so cold they burned, and then thirty seconds in a luke-warm shower afterwards.

lalaloopyhead · 08/03/2023 13:04

Yes, definitely! Almost 50, and I can remeber doing cross country in the snow - where we ran round a route of the local area off school grounds with absolutely no supervision. I have a memory doing PE at primary school in the snow too and wearing only a leotard and leg warmers! Brrrr

Spanielsarepainless · 08/03/2023 13:08

Yes, I am 60 and we did cross country running in snow. I don't ever remember school being cancelled for snow either. We all just turned up as usual.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 08/03/2023 13:15

1980, a primary school in Wiltshire. Playing netball whilst snowing in artex shirts & gym skirt.
Teacher in full length coat, hat & hands in a muffler. Told us if we ran about more we wouldn't be cold.
At least when we went up to secondary school we were allowed to wear jumpers when PE/games were outside.

BooksAndHooks · 08/03/2023 13:19

I can’t remember it but I wouldn’t have taken part if it had. I’m pretty sure it was bench ball in the indoor gym in bad weather.

Natsku · 08/03/2023 13:28

I don't remember doing PE in the snow but maybe it just didn't snow on any PE days, certainly I don't remember all that many school days that had snow. I do remember doing hockey when it felt freezing cold outside and not enjoying that.

DD does PE in the snow but they dress properly for it (skiing) so not a problem. PE in the snow or other bad weather could be made good and fun if only the children are dressed well for it and the activities suit the weather (like snowball throwing in snowy weather, or muddy tag in waterproofs in rainy weather - literally stuck in the mud!) but just making children play a sport that isn't suited for the weather, in freezing temperatures in shorts and t-shirt is cruel, especially as there's often periods of standing around in sports rather than constant movement like in cross-country running.

Itsaloadofbollocks · 08/03/2023 13:37

God yes.. Hockey or cross country in the snow whilst the teachers sat in the gym having tea/coffee and smoking whilst watching us through the window.

Itsaloadofbollocks · 08/03/2023 13:38

Meant to say and it was in t shirt and shorts. No tracksuits allowed.

katsue · 08/03/2023 13:56

DS's rugby club cancelled quite a few weekends of matches when the ground was frozen earlier in the season. I'm pretty sure it's in like with England Rugby's policy. It will be down to increased risk of injury and so isn't the same as other sports or because of a snowflake generation (pun intended) .

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 08/03/2023 14:07

50 here, played hockey & did cross country in the snow. We even did cross country with local flooding once.

I can also remember doing inter-school hockey matches in the snow. We could wear a tracksuit top to warm up before, but matches were gym skirt, PE knickers, aertex polo top, hockey socks & boots. Come rain, shine, or snow. I don’t think it ever occurred to us to moan about the weather!

LadyHarrietVane · 08/03/2023 14:08

I’m mid 50s and never did school PE in the snow. Rain, yes, but not snow. Rugby is usually cancelled because of the risk of damage to the pitches - playing on frozen or waterlogged pitches buggers up the grass.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 08/03/2023 18:57

Yes it was always hockey at that time of year and the ball would barely roll over the snow and ice. One memorable snowy day the PE teachers sent us to the shops for black bins bags and we used them to sledge down the hills. We had to wring our knickers out before going onto Geography. That was the only time it snowed that we didn't do regular PE. I'm 46.

Digimoor · 08/03/2023 09:59

Yes - we were forced to play hockey in snow - aertex top and skirt!
Teachers were in full ski gear

Yep me too! With the games teacher shouting ‘come on girls, it’s not that cold!’

LlynTegid · 08/03/2023 19:26

Once we played hockey in snow. Usually PE was postponed or moved indoors.

Borborygmus · 08/03/2023 22:13

Back in the 70s we did PE outside whatever the weather. Press ups in the snow were particularly unpleasant. Mind you PE teachers tended to be a sub-human species, perhaps they still are?

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/03/2023 22:22

We did cross country (although you could hardly call it cross country in the suburbs of Bristol) in appalling weather, but generally we moved indoors for an impromptu dance lesson.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 09/03/2023 03:31

No, our PE lessons were moved indoors when it snowed. I’m 53.

I now live in Maine and in winter most of the sports kids do at school are indoor sports. Our playing fields are currently under more than a foot of snow. Good for cross country skiing but not much else.

itsgettingweird · 09/03/2023 04:31

Not on snow. South coast and rarely happens here!

But we definitely did PE and sports fixtures in freezing conditions on frozen pitches in PE shirts.

I can confirm it hurst even more being battered by a hickey stick in freezing temps than it does when it's warm Grin
