Single woman. What city to visit in Europe?

Any suggestions welcome. Would like a peaceful hotel, shopping, museums, somewhere nice to have a meal by myself and lots of walking / nice scenery. Any ideas welcome... budget £1,000... but reluctantly x

Stockholm, for sure. Loads of museums, you can walk around Gamla Stan and Djürgarden, visit Skansen, take little boat tours. Lots of shops, and the food is great. It is expensive though.

My DSD who was 22 at the time went alone to Budapest last year and absolutely loved it. Its meant to be one of the safest cities in Europe for a lone female and DSD said she actually felt safer than in her home city in the UK. Loads of beautiful places to visit and she said the food is amazing and very reasonable. She stayed in a hotel that was a boat on the Danube that again was very reasonable and the views were stunning.

Not sure what you mean by reluctantly... you want to spend less? (Fair enough if so)

I really want to visit Lucca and in your circumstances would probably do that. Alternatively Vienna.

Snailsaresweet · 05/03/2023 15:29

It depends how long you want to go for. I had a very lovely long weekend in Ghent - quite a lot to see, some nice shopping, lots of places to sit and have a relaxed beer. But if it had been longer than two days, I'd have probably got a bit bored, and had to pop down the road to Bruges, which is also lovely. If you want a big city, you can't go wrong with Paris - loads to see, great people watching and some amazing shops of all types.

AllMouthButNoTrousers · 05/03/2023 15:30

Copenhagen, Budapest, Bruges, Amsterdam, Paris. I enjoyed all those on my own.

Lovetotravel123 · 05/03/2023 15:31

Prague has all of that.

openingbat · 05/03/2023 15:31

Malaga

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 05/03/2023 15:31

Bruges, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Aix-en-Provence - all lovely.

I've traveled all over the world as a single woman. There's honestly nowhere I've felt unsafe, if that's the purpose of your question.
Budget £1K, but for how long, and do you want to stay in one city or travel around a bit?

Summerhillsquare · 05/03/2023 15:38

San Sebastian, by train. Divine!

Dartmoorcheffy · 05/03/2023 15:41

Rome. I went alone and loved it.

Pileofjeans · 05/03/2023 15:42

Anywhere op. Like a pp I've never felt unsafe anywhere.

I went to Florence on my own pre COVID. Loved it. Stayed in an air b n b south of the water. Walked loads, did the museum's and tours. Visited the bars and drank wine. People watched and read books. Lunch and dinner out. It was amazing.

Berlin. Easy to get around. Loads of history/good good/shopping etc. Or if you’d like some beach/sea side action then Malaga.

Madrid
Paris
Brussels
Milan
Rome
Stockholm
Vienna

ScabbyHorse · 05/03/2023 15:46

Seville

Gwenhwyfar · 05/03/2023 15:50

When are you going and what kind of temperature do you like?
In spring, I would go to places that are normally a bit too hot in summer. Stockholm, Bruges, etc. are great in July and August so I'd be more inclined to go to Madrid or Seville or Athens because they're difficult in the summer.
I agree that nowhere in Europe is likely to feel unsafe during the day, but if you're young you might get some street harassment in some places (maybe if you're older too, not sure).

I do not feel safe in Delhi, or Mumbai or generally any of the larger Indian cities. Especially on my own after dark.

LawksaMercyMissus · 05/03/2023 19:04

I've done Paris, Lucca, Madrid, Porto, Brussels alone without any concerns. Your budget is massive!

cptartapp · 05/03/2023 19:10

Seville.

Empra123 · 05/03/2023 19:16

Vienna

ThreeRingCircus · 05/03/2023 19:23

I agree with Budapest. I went alone and felt completely safe. It's not too massive and easy to get around. Lots of interesting history and the food was great. I did a walking tour which was really interesting.

Augend23 · 05/03/2023 19:23

I very happily visited Paris on my own.

Not a big city but Carcassonne is lovely, cheap flights and I have stayed in a lovely AirBNB there. Avignon is also fab and you can get the Eurostar there.

Kawaii50 · 05/03/2023 19:35

Nice is lovely, someone else said Aix above which is not far away, I found Nice very friendly to tourists, lovely restaurants, lots of interesting art and museums, great sea-front promenade, varied markets, very easy-to-use public transport. I went with easyjet and stayed in an airbnb in the Old Town. Matisse museum is closed at the moment but everything else was open.

Oinkypig · 05/03/2023 19:37

Rome, I was there recently just before Christmas alone and it was amazing. Such a walkable city as as it’s mostly flat, I didn’t get a taxi or public transport once and just the train to and from the airport.

DoThePropeller · 05/03/2023 19:43

I would go to Granada and see the Alhambra if you haven’t done it, one of my fav weekend trips. Stay at Hotel Alhambra Palace, approx £200 per night.

Recently went to Lisbon for a long weekend and there was loads to do, great food, really nice weather too.
