Single woman. What city to visit in Europe?

Any suggestions welcome. Would like a peaceful hotel, shopping, museums, somewhere nice to have a meal by myself and lots of walking / nice scenery. Any ideas welcome... budget £1,000... but reluctantly x

Rome or Amsterdam

lozrox90 · 05/03/2023 20:14

Following with interest - I really want to book one or two European breaks this year and will be going alone so this thread is great!

Bubblesdublin · 05/03/2023 20:29

Paris, Rome or Dublin.

mast0650 · 05/03/2023 20:32

I was literally about to say Stockholm, then saw it was the first response you got. I've only done one European city break by myself and that was to Stockholm in 2020. I managed to squeeze it in between travel restrictions and it was a perfect choice. Very safe, beautiful, walkable, stylish, clean, easy. Everyone speaks good English. Not particularly cheap however.

mast0650 · 05/03/2023 20:33

Or one of my favourites which I have done with the family is Ljubljana. Its very small and low key for a capital city. But I like that. More than enough to keep you occupied for a weekend.

TheVanguardSix · 05/03/2023 20:35

Valencia
Small, easy to navigate, beautiful centre, lots to do, excellent restaurants, brilliant cycling and meandering around. Perfect for a short break.
I stayed in the Hotel Hospes Palau de la Mar- a beautiful spa hotel in an amazing location (by the market where I had coffee orxata and people watched underneath a blue sky in February).
Another recommendation would be Seville (apparently it’s absolutely gorgeous and the Alhambra/Granada is an easy trip from there).

Moredarkchocolateplease · 05/03/2023 20:35

I did Venice, Pisa/Florence and Paris and gran canaria on my own in my 20s. I never had a seconds worry or bother.

Venice was my favourite and I went back for honeymoon.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/03/2023 20:36

Rome!

Toddlerteaplease · 05/03/2023 20:37

I've been several times on my own and loved it.

Citrysign · 05/03/2023 20:37

Seville (there are lots of great day trips from there too, depending on how long you’re staying), Lisbon, Porto (not sure about museums and quite a bit smaller), Budapest where you could go to the baths.. As a solo traveller in 20s I got harassed a bit in Rome and Paris but could be the same with other big cities

Coronateachingagain · 05/03/2023 20:38

Just to add to the already long and great list - Berlin! Lots going on lots of history and good restaurants and places where you can people watch too.

Backstreets · 05/03/2023 20:44

Nice is surprisingly affordable (I rented an apartment with a gorgeous balcony on my own through AirBnB for less than what I'd pay for a shithole on the outskirts of Paris) and very gorgeous including weatherwise, Vienna has super museums and galleries, is very walkable and has lots of good food, Brussels is great for shopping and more museums, Budapest has must-try cuisine and is very affordable.

We're so lucky to have so many terrific destinations relatively close by :)

I'm another one who's travelled all over on her own and bar some light street harassment (particularly in France and Italy, nothing stern words didn't take care of) I've never had an issue.

LawksaMercyMissus · 05/03/2023 20:50

Oooh, I forgot Valencia. Bordeaux?

helpfulperson · 05/03/2023 20:50

Lucerne is nice. Malaga was mentioned above - I was surprised by how much I liked that when I had a day there after another holiday.

Lovetotravel123 · 05/03/2023 15:31

Prague has all of that.

Would absolutely never say Prague! I went as a lone traveller (female) and it was horrendous! Tons of stag do’s making snide comments, lots of massage places on advertisement and seedy men outside pressurising you to go in.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 05/03/2023 21:09

Lisbon is fabulous.

Snoken · 05/03/2023 21:11

Stockholm is a great destination for this sort of trip, especially in the summer. It’s very walkable (driving discouraged), great public transport including commuter boats to the different islands, safe, lots of great museums and galleries, food is nice and varied but alcohol is super expensive.

Cooroo · 05/03/2023 21:12

Córdoba. Small but lots to see and do. Great atmosphere.

notacooldad · 05/03/2023 21:16

I have felt safe in every country I've been to in Europe including Lithuania, Moldova, Romania Albania and Montenegro as a solo female traveller.
My favourite cities are Oslo and Tirana with a notable mention to Gothenberg.

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 05/03/2023 21:39

Madrid.

Hoolihan · 05/03/2023 21:45

I went to Malaga alone in December and LOVED it. Compact, lively, so much to do. Amazing food and so cheap! Granada is wonderful too.

newtb · 05/03/2023 21:49

Reims and go round the champagne houses. Lovely traditional hôtel le Crystal in the centre. Or the Continental.

Girasoli · 05/03/2023 21:49

Also love Malaga
Would pick Milan over Rome as a single woman
