PE teacher lost DDs inhaler!

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 04/03/2023 10:58

Apparently DD gives it to the teacher at the start of each PE lesson, (she can't carry it cos her kit doesn't have pockets) a couple of months ago he broke the cap by tossing it to her to catch but she missed, and now he's gone and lost it! She asked for it back at the end of the lesson and he couldn't find it! It was her spare one so now she has to go all weekend without it. Thankfully her asthma is not at all severe and she's never had an attack so the likelihood of her needing it desperately is low but its still annoying, she's not going to get a replacement until Wednesday now. Will 111 be able to issue an emergency prescription?

Forestfire12345 · 04/03/2023 12:32

Never known a PE teacher to have medication on their person throughout a lesson . Did he put it somewhere? Surely there can be sealed box in the area for medication. Definitely seems like a better system needs to be implemented.

tattychicken · 04/03/2023 12:42

You can buy one over the counter from a pharmacy.

tattychicken · 04/03/2023 12:44

But yes, annoying. Happened to me several times as child so learnt to always keep
It on me. Shoved it down my bra or a sock and managed to play a lot of sport quite happily like that.

Waterfallgirl · 04/03/2023 12:47

Schools are supposed to keep spares on site now. I’d complain anyway he seems a bit useless if he can be so cavalier about an inhaler - they need better training and procedures.

Soontobe60 · 04/03/2023 12:50

What do you assume that he lost it? Perhaps another student took it. If tha was her spare, where’s her other one?

No you can't.

LatteLady · 04/03/2023 13:13

Can I suggest you raise a complaint with the school, work your way through the procedure starting with the PE teacher and ask to speak to the safeguarding lead, too. Unfortunately, it would appear that the teacher does not fully understand the dangers of asthma.

Mindymomo · 04/03/2023 13:19

My DH used to run a football team, my Son also has Asthma. Nearly every week we would get home and find inhalers put in the first aid bag without our knowledge. The trouble is when they are lost, GP doesn’t like prescribing too many. I used to ask for 2 each repeat to get some spares. It’s very annoying that teacher has lost one as what would happen if your DD needed it whilst doing PE.

ittakes2 · 04/03/2023 13:22

you can use NHS 111 online service to apply for another one over the weekend they have designated chemists who can look at her records and see she has one and replace it - I think

custardbear · 04/03/2023 13:24

I got one in Scotland about 10 years ago via private script they did for me in the pharmacy.

Personally I wouldn't risk only having 1 inhaler because something happened to that and she now has none.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/03/2023 13:09

No you can't.

That’s a shame. It was really handy to be able to nip into Asda pharmacy and buy one when we were on holiday and forgot the spare. Guess a few idiots spoiled it for the majority of sensible users.
You can do it online at a pharmacy, but probably just as quick to wait until Wednesday.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 04/03/2023 13:26

@AintNobodyHereButUsChickens Can you not stitch a secret pocket in her PE gear? Or buy a holder which can be safety pinned to her t shirt?

TheDutchHouse · 04/03/2023 13:27

As someone who lost an adult child to an asthma attack I'd be asking the school asap what their written policy is regarding inhalers and medication in general. Your daughter should always have a spare one in the medical room to get if needed.
They need to be accountable whether or not it was accidentally lost.
You can't mess about with something as serious.

TitaniasAss · 04/03/2023 13:27

My DD told me that her PE teacher had lost her inhaler. I thought it sounded odd that she would keep it on her and it turns out that DD had lost it herself and blamed the teacher. I would perhaps speak to the teacher first before taking this at face value.

greenacrylicpaint · 04/03/2023 13:28

dc school has a big red mesh bag for medications during pe lessons.
dc put their meds in a clearly labelled ziploc type bag in there at the start of the lesson. dc are responsible for putting their meds in and retrieving it after the lesson.
it works very well.

maybe ask the school if they can do something similar.

LIZS · 04/03/2023 13:29

If it was her spare does she not have the other?

weightymatters73 · 04/03/2023 13:33

You should always have more than one spare, in case it gets lost. You definitely need another - ask the doctor for 2 on this prescription....

MrsWojadobakowsky · 04/03/2023 13:36

LIZS · 04/03/2023 13:29

If it was her spare does she not have the other?

The OP said the teacher broke the first one by throwing it to be caught. Presumably haven't replaced it so was using the spare.

tattychicken · 04/03/2023 13:41

@Toddlerteaplease You can still effectively do this, several times have ordered online from Boots and collected a couple of hours later. They are pretty good with inhalers due to the potential risks.
I am asthmatic and have 2 children with asthma, we generally have several inhalers each on the go at the same time but sometimes things go pear shaped.
OP I would ring your local chemist and explain, you could prob order online and collect this afternoon.

Sirzy · 04/03/2023 13:41

I would get her a bumbag type thing to put inhaler and spacer in during PE.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/03/2023 13:44

@tattychicken only if you have them regularly. I mean that you can't do and buy them like calpol

💐 so sorry for your loss. Because so many people have mild asthma most people don’t realise how serious asthma can be.

SpookyBlackCat · 04/03/2023 13:54

This might be stupid but can you write her name in big letters on it with a marker? I wouldn’t complain but I’d call and check what the procedure for storing inhalers during PE is.
