PE teacher lost DDs inhaler!

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 04/03/2023 10:58

Apparently DD gives it to the teacher at the start of each PE lesson, (she can't carry it cos her kit doesn't have pockets) a couple of months ago he broke the cap by tossing it to her to catch but she missed, and now he's gone and lost it! She asked for it back at the end of the lesson and he couldn't find it! It was her spare one so now she has to go all weekend without it. Thankfully her asthma is not at all severe and she's never had an attack so the likelihood of her needing it desperately is low but its still annoying, she's not going to get a replacement until Wednesday now. The OP said the teacher broke the first one by throwing it to be caught. Presumably haven't replaced it so was using the spare
That's how I read it too.

if the original inhaler was broken several months ago and they were using just a spare with no other spare inhaler then I'd question why it's taken several months to get another inhaler to be honest.

It's not ideal having to wait until Wednesday for another, I'd probably call 111 for another prescription just in case, and I'd want to talk to the teacher about it, but i'd struggle to make a big deal about the situation if I'd knowingly had the spare inhaler at school and not sorted another inhaler for several months.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/03/2023 14:04

111 was issue a replacement

But why was she using her spare ? And other one not replaced

You can buy online and delivered the next day. My dh has done that before

That's why you need to make sure she isn't on her only inhaler at the time (especially as it could have passed its expiry date, they recommend that everybody uses a spacer and you never know for sure if it's all been used up or not).

A prescription for 4 + spacer x 2 would mean

One on her at all times
One in the school medical room with a spacer for when she forgets hers/it doesn't work/it's out of date
Two spares

Schools can also purchase spare emergency inhalers that can be used where a child has already been diagnosed with asthma and has submitted a care plan in advance. But there's no use relying upon that.

She needs you to be more on top of her medication.

You can buy one over the counter from a pharmacy.

You really can’t.

amylou8 · 04/03/2023 14:26

No use to you right now, but you can buy them OTC in most countries. I came back from Turkey last time with 5 spares for just over £1 each. Just take the one you have into a pharmacy and they'll happily hand over multiple replacements. You can also buy extras online in the UK, but they work much more expensive.

tattychicken · 04/03/2023 14:44

@Jooliusreezer You can if like OP's daughter you have already been prescribed one. I did it about 6 weeks ago, rang local Boots, explained the situation, ordered and paid online, collected about 3 hours later.
You're right in that you can't rock and get one like Calpol, but entirely possible to get one quite quickly in OPs circs.

TheBigWangTheory · 04/03/2023 14:45

Toddlerteaplease · 04/03/2023 13:09

No you can't.

Yes, you can. I've done it many times.

WonderingWanda · 04/03/2023 14:49

Ask the school if she can wear a running belt / pouch to store it in for PE.

GoldilockMom · 04/03/2023 14:53

My kids put them in their socks.

I always thought the teachers should have a red plastic box for medication on the pitch.

Worth asking

ZeldaB · 04/03/2023 15:17

The school is definitely being negligent and in breach of its legal duties towards her. Throwing about her medical equipment is disrespectful as well as creating serious risks. I’d raise all that in writing with the school, and say that as PE staff are clearly not competent to look after the inhaler, DD will be wearing it in a [bum bag / whatever works] in future and if the school has any problem with that they might want to reflect on their legal obligations and the implications for the school should DD suffer a fatal asthma attack on school premises on the same day as staff lose/break her life-saving equipment.

WonderingWanda · 04/03/2023 14:49

Ask the school if she can wear a running belt / pouch to store it in for PE.

No. Don’t ask. TELL. The school lost their right to an opinion when school staff started throwing her inhaler about.

You should always have more than one spare, in case it gets lost. You definitely need another - ask the doctor for 2 on this prescription....

If only it were that easy! I asked for a second script to keep at work but it was denied - I was just told to keep it on me at all times.

People have different types and strengths of inhalers.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 04/03/2023 17:34

I’d be questioning the process of it being stored with him - if she’d needed it during the lesson then it seems the teacher hadn’t realised he’d lost it.

So many schools don’t take asthma seriously enough.

From the OP:

I did read the OPs post. My point is that he may have not been able to find it because someone could have taken it. So he didn’t lose it, it was stolen!

Soontobe60 · 04/03/2023 17:37

MrsWojadobakowsky · 04/03/2023 13:36

No, she said the cap broke. You don’t need a cap for an inhaler to work!

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/03/2023 17:39

@MissMaple82 yes obviously. Tho the basic blue inhaler is what is usually given

My 5yr has the same as her dad

Obv the op needs to order what is her daughters inhaler

The link was for the chemist online

mathanxiety · 04/03/2023 17:48

What @LatteLady said.

Losing an inhaler isn't acceptable.

Can you not provide some sort of small bag/ bum bag/ pouch for DD to keep her inhaler in? Or create a zipped pocket in her PE kit?

Ponderingwindow · 04/03/2023 17:50

Do your kids not use spacers? How do they carry inhalers without bags?

dd’s asthma is admittedly bad and p.e. Class is her biggest trigger so i would be freaking out right now. She has ended up in the hospital multiple times. I have watched all the color drain from her body more than once. The teacher not knowing exactly where to find an inhaler within seconds is not acceptable. We also keep a backup kit in the office just in case, but that is too far away.

the mellow response to this is shocking.

mathanxiety · 04/03/2023 17:51

Older kids and teens don't necessarily use spacers.

Ponderingwindow · 04/03/2023 17:54

spacers are recommended for adults now too where I live so that surprises me.

Bumpinthenight · 04/03/2023 17:57

Asthma UK recommends that a spacer should be used when using an MDI inhaler.

My teen daughter keeps hers in an unused by pencils pencil case for school and then a bum bag for work/out and about.

Definitely tell school what your DD will be using from now on to ensure her inhaler is kept safe.

Leftbutcameback · 04/03/2023 17:58

You can get a small pouch which attaches to the waistband which she could keep her inhaler in. It’s Velcro so not a permanent attachment. I use one when I exercise without a suitable pocket (some are too tight and the inhaler digs in)

Leftbutcameback · 04/03/2023 17:59

MissMaple82 · 04/03/2023 17:30

People have different types and strengths of inhalers.

Not with relievers - they are generally all the same. It’s the preventers which vary significantly.

mathanxiety · 04/03/2023 17:51

Older kids and teens don't necessarily use spacers.

spacers are now recommended for everyone.

ds has a smaller aero chamber spacer which he uses out and about and the volumatic for at home.
