PE teacher lost DDs inhaler!

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 04/03/2023 10:58

Apparently DD gives it to the teacher at the start of each PE lesson, (she can't carry it cos her kit doesn't have pockets) a couple of months ago he broke the cap by tossing it to her to catch but she missed, and now he's gone and lost it! She asked for it back at the end of the lesson and he couldn't find it! It was her spare one so now she has to go all weekend without it. Thankfully her asthma is not at all severe and she's never had an attack so the likelihood of her needing it desperately is low but its still annoying, she's not going to get a replacement until Wednesday now. But if I've read this correctly, the dd had 2. The cap broke on one a few months ago. The op hasn't replaced that yet, in a few months.

Marynotsocontrary · 04/03/2023 18:19

You can still use the inhaler without the cap, so not sure where the other inhaler is?
My DC keeps the inhaler in their sock, not ideal I grant you. You can buy arm straps with pouches to hold inhalers too I believe.
I find teenagers don't want to draw attention to themselves by using spacers in school, they're embarrassed about it at this age.

  • in their sock during sports

You need to speak to the school about this and escalate to at least the Head of Department. Even children will well managed and stable asthma can have fatal attacks. I’ve seen the devastation myself, a young person playing sport and even with their inhaler they did not survive. The teacher was being completely irresponsible. Ask them if they feel they should be taking this more seriously and would they feel the same way if your daughter had an attack leading to hospital attendance and they had not kept her medication to hand.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 04/03/2023 19:07

Sorry, let me clarify, the one he threw only the cap broke. She was still able to use it but it ran out the other week and I haven't had chance to replace it yet, which is why she was using the spare.

So you’re criticising the PE teacher because the inhaler went missing in PE, but you’ve not had time to order a new one in 2 weeks!!! I think you’ve got your priorities wrong OP.
By all means challenge the school policy of what happens to inhalers during PE, but also, accept s)me responsibility for DD not having an inhaler now.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 04/03/2023 19:28

Was it clearly named? If so odds are it will turn up.

Sirzy · 04/03/2023 19:44

Ask the GP to prescribe two this time (explain your on your back up) then every time you open a new one order another and have them on rotation.

If only it were that easy! I asked for a second script to keep at work but it was denied - I was just told to keep it on me at all times.

Seriously?!?! I got 2 repeats of all my asthma meds so I could keep one set at my holiday cottage....GP didn't even blink, just gave me a second prescription.

(And that is far far less necessary than you are talking!)

Sounds like you need a change of GP...

daffodilandtulip · 05/03/2023 08:47

What about using one of those arm straps for phones which runners use?

lunar1 · 05/03/2023 08:54

Bury her some tracksuit bottoms in the right colour with a zip pocket and tell the school she will be wearing them instead. Like fuck would my ds do pe with no inhaler.

School can buy inhalers, so they can replace the list one on Monday. They should have a supply in anyway for taking on trips etc.

Do you not have it on a repeat monthly prescription

So as it runs out should be another one on order already

That's how it works for my dd and dh

Polarbearyfairy · 05/03/2023 10:19

My prescription is for two at a time so I have a spare. I don't use my blue one much but I've always been told I need at least one spare.

I'd get her one of those running pouches that go on her arm.

Floraflower3 · 05/03/2023 10:19

I understand asthma control varies, but if people are needing to use their reliever more than 3x per week (to the point of ordering a blue inhaler every month) , you should see your GP/ asthma specialist as it’s a sign it’s not well controlled.

carriedout · 05/03/2023 10:23

This needs a formal complaint. the school will have policies on medications. This is a serious Health & Safety issue.

You need to get a replacement inhaler earlier - before you are left with only one, your DD should never have only one. But that is a separate issue.

The PE teacher sounds like a prat (sadly a very high percentage of PE teachers are).

Butterfly44 · 05/03/2023 10:34

So the answer is: call the doctors or 111 if out of hours, get a script sent to pharmacy of your choice, go pick up medicine. It's not a disaster.

My dh does see the asthma nurse and has 2 blue asthma a month plus a purple one

People have diff levels of asthma

WeepingSomnambulist · 05/03/2023 11:32

What if she had needed it during the lesson? This could have resulted in a death.

If they take medication then they must know where it is and be able to provide it.

This needs to be taken really seriously and I'd raising hell with the school.

Is it not different with exercise? My DC were told to take a puff of reliever asthma medication shortly before exercising.

If you have been told by the prescriber to take the reliever before exercise, then I wouldn’t count that within the 3x per week guidance (as it’s preventative rather than having attacks 3x per week if that makes sense) but you can double check that with whoever is monitoring their asthma Smile

Yes, I use mine that way too. Before swimming, gym / PT, classless etc. But it still doesn’t run out anywhere near once a month! I think it has 120 actuations?

I do wonder if people are getting confused by the reference to colour rather than issuing the terms reliever and preventer?

Preventers come in pretty much every colour of the rainbow now (my current one is greenish)

WorriedMillie · 05/03/2023 21:33

(For future ref) DD’s school provides these for for essential meds that need to be carried with the child. From year ?5 upwards they are responsible for taking their own inhalers, etc from class to class
Obviously they don’t prevent the child from losing their meds, but they are far more visible

Ponderingwindow · 05/03/2023 22:23

My dd has to do 4 puffs before of her reliever before every period of exercise. This is in addition to twice a day doses of preventer. We go through inhalers very quickly. (We also have the joy of living in a country where we have to pay for them)

Marynotsocontrary · 05/03/2023 22:34

We were told 2 puffs before exercise, but also to start using it more (the reliever) at the first signs of a cold and during a cold. It's also needed when allergies flare. Lots of allergies in this house. So we do end up using it quite a bit.

I think it will vary from person to person what's needed really. As long as you're following medical advice and keeping an eye on it I think you're doing ok. I'm thinking about starting monitoring peak flow too, just to keep a closer eye on how well the asthma is under control here.

I’ve been told in the past to increase my preventer with a cold rather than reliever, but I know the guidance changes quite frequently and I don’t see my asthma nurse very often now.

Can I ask if it works well (using it during a cold)?

I have found peak flow monitoring really useful as it’s often the first sign that I’m struggling when levels drop 10% or so. I used to use an app for it which was useful.

Similarly it’s been great to see my peak flow average go up since I have a much better inhaler now.
